Saravanan,
>>>>>>The quiet contentment, the pervading joy, the happy sigh that escapes you after a full-meal at Karpagam Mess, or at the sight of Mamis and their daughters bedecked in their best and coming to the Music Academy in December, or when you wake up at 5 in a Maargazhi morning to a faintly audible LRE’s ‘Thaaye Karumaari’ from a distant temple’s loud-speaker or the sight of your patti arriving from the village, carrying loads of affection and dabbas filled with seedai and murukku- adhey, adhey thirupthiyaana sandhosham fills you when you listen to this song! Pure, unfiltered, old-fashioned enchantment! <<<<<<<<<
This para is making me get terribly 'senti' over Madras!
The making of 'Avan oru sariththiram', I think, started off on a fairly good note, but the story line was later changed to accommodate '20 point programme' and the propaganda element ruined the film! ( Around the same time, a Telugu dubbed film 'andRum indRum'with Aalam and VK Ramaswamy's 'Rudra thaaNdavam' also had '20 point' propaganda in them!.) A friend of mine saw the film and told me an authentic audience response! Someone suddenly shouted " yOv! thalamayirap pichchukkaRO(m)yyaa!!" I think there was a song with Sivaji and ManjuLa selling Newspapers 'naaLai enna naaLai?! indRu kooda namadhuthaan!' (a rejoinder to 'naaLai namadhE!)
'iLaiya thalaimuRai' was Sivaji & Vanishri's reply to many 'New Wave' films with real adolescents (all clones of Bobby, like 'Pattaam poochchi', 'Maalai sooda vaa', 'Oh Manju!' etc.,), in which even a few kissing sequences were slipped in, without getting into the debate whether the censors would permit it or not!

Mookkai Konjam Ippadi....Yes, Naththu is Naththanniya! That song from Chinna Chinna is another VJ "stop-watch" special. Enna Speedu! (To borrow a line from the inimitable Gopi in "Kodiyettam"). The way VJ relishes words like "thavaraththule, theruvoraththule, thala thala....valarantha ponnu...thanni...thavi..." Just that "tha" sound, and how many magical moments in it! The mark of a great singer. (A similar phonetic pleasure is part of the "Nai" in Ammanai. Vairangal Aththanaiyum!!)

A better eulogy for the thespian there is yet to be! Saravanan Sootiya Swaramaalai! Negizhnudhuvittaen!

Is there a link to this article, if so is it in tamizh, if so can someone write a gist (not a translation) of the article?

It is in tamil. Every week some personality will recount some kind of miracle that has happened in their lifetime. This week's personality is VJ.
There is only a link to the main page www.vikatan.com and not to that page...

Priya, Kaumudi, All
I am having a problem with this Tamizh font thing again. Is there ONE universal Tamizh font that works for all tamizh journals...and how do I get it? And if I do, how do I make my computer to upload this font automatically every time I click on a tamizhnews link?? Help!

Naaz,
have you downloaded the font?
If yuo haven't then look at the left hand menu on www.vikatan.com. There is a line saying "Font Problem". Click on that. Thenm click on "Download Font" link. The instructions are provided ther.
In general, make sure your downloaded font files (which will have the extension .ttf in most cases) are located in the Fonts folder in your PC.
Hope this helps...

I believe most of the Tamil pages uses Amudham font. I can email the file if you wish...
If you make sure that your font file is located in the Fonts folder you can automatically view the tamil text when the page loads...

Priya: The actors in suprabatham were Latha and Jaiganesh not KRV/Saratbabu. I don't think either KRV or Saratbabu were in the film, could be mistaken.
Naaz: Different sites have different fonts. If you are using explorer, you need to set view->encoding->user defined. Typically, at this point the page reloads using the correct font (if it has been installed). In netscape, I believe this is view->character set->user defined. But, you have to repeat this for every link you follow in the site/every time you go to this site again. I've sent you email separately+the aana kaana song link.

C V/Naaz/Priya/Neel- Nandri.
C V- I always feel 'senti' about Chennai. How much I miss it:-(
Kaumudi- Eagerly awaiting your translations.
Btw, that article by VJ in Vikatan- she refers to an incident in 1987 (don't know why she says that was 27 yrs back!- perhaps it should have been 1977)- the U.P.Govt. had invited her to give a concert in Badrinath. On the way there was a landslide and there was no way she could reach the venue in time. She was bitterly disappointed. A Nepali appeared suddenly and offered to show her a route- she followed him, she had to jump down a slope, crawl for some distance and again climb a bit, and then reached the venue safely and gave a satisfying recital.
She feels that Lord Vishnu Himself came as that Nepali to guide her.

Kik,
I saw the movie "Suprabatham". I am 100% positive that the song was sung by KRV and Sarathbabu. I still remember the long thilakam sported by KRV in this movie supposedly portraying an Iyengar mami. They sing this song in front of the "sannidhi".
Prabably Latha and Jaiganesh are also in the movie...I do not rememeber them..Well, Bakthi movies generally have lots of titbit stories...

Saravanan
Thanks for that translation/gist. I can't believe she took the risk just to get to the venue. I admire that respect she had for her fans who were perhaps eagerly waiting to listen to her.
Translations are on their way. Hope I can do half as good a job as you and Naaz do with writing stuff. Thanks for the support you, CV, Naaz and everyone else.

Every person that contributes to these threads has their own "muththirai." We all bring something different, in perspective and in purpose. I have no doubt that your translations will capture both, the authenticity and the lyrical value within those Telegu songs.
So: when can we have the first instalment? :-)

Priya-
Kik is right. The song 'Kannanai ninaithaal' features Jaiganesh and Latha. Jaiganesh comes as a sculptor.
Yes, I remember KRV sporting a long thilagam, getting separated from her husband Sarathbabu and finding him again. But this song is definitely Jaiganesh-Latha.

yvs mani-thanks for reminding the lovely 'Vaanile endha naalum' song. 'Anu' had a great SPB-VJ duet as well- 'Sandhana kaattil malligai pooththathu'. Btw, are you sure 'Vellai pura ondru' had a song by VJ? I thought it was total SJ show?
Kaumudi, I am sure you will do an excellent translation. I too had a lot of misgivings before I started on the chronology, as I had never done any 'writing' before- but it seems so easy now! (thanks to every one's encouragement) I think if the subject is sufficiently interesting (which, of course, it is), writing on it comes effortlessly! Just do it, buddy! :-)
