To all TFMers:
Can we discuss song picturisation. It will be great if TFMers write about their favourite song sequence picturisation and the reason they like it. For example my all time favourite combination is Balumahendra and Raja.
Just to mention a few of their less well known songs with great picturisation.
1. KaNil enna kaarkaalam, kannangaLil neer kolam..... in the movie Un kannil neer vazhinthal.
I love the songs which are in the background when the hero/heroine are not really singing it but the mood of their actions is conveyed by the song. In this song Rajini is trying to comfort Madhavi who has recently lost her brother (Sarath Babu). Balumahendra starts out as ususal by potraying a gloomy day which later becomes more cloudy and then it rains. Madhavi has done a wonderful job of potraying the emotions of loss/sadness/uncertainity about the future yet slowly feeling more and more confident about the presence of her lover (Rajini). Towards the end of the 3rd stanza the words " Yen kannil neer vendum, sugamaga azha vendum..." echoes in the background and she almost gives the feeling of being completely pacified just as a baby would feel secure in her mothers lap.
2. Another song in the same movie- this time a love song but a solo by SJ. Again the song is in the background and both Rajini and Madhavi are romantically involved. The song is "Malare malare ulaasam, endhan ninaive ninaive sangeetham....' The glances of both Rajini and Madhavi show their deep romantic involvement as also their exchanging sweet nothings from time to time. One of the shots in the song show Rajini to be lying on Madhavi's lap and busy reading a magazine, while she is in her own world content at staring at the beautiful park/garden they are in. However, after a few minutes she gets bored and with a small twig tries to tickle his ear to disturb him as he is immersed deeply into his magazine. Rajini does not even take his eyes of the magazine but reflexly brushes Madhavi's arm. She repeats this after a few seconds and he again does this. Finally she gets curious as to what he is so deeply involved in. She grabs the magazine of Rajini's hand and lo and behold it is the Playboy centerpage nudes!! The scene ends with Madhavi trying to chase Rajini with the rolled book in her hand and he runing for cover.
I have enjoyed many more of Balumahendra + Raja's combination songs. I will add more as TFMers start writing their favourites.

I liked the picturisation in the following songs:
1)Enna saththam indha nEram uyirin oliya in "Punnagai Mannan". The Director shows how the lovers yearn to live yet decide to die because they cannot face the opposition from the world. The song is picturised so well that you will also feel for those two people who love so much but couldn't live together.
We can see the "miratchi" in Rekha's eyes when he clasps the hand of Kamal before jumping into the water. And before that the Director shows how they try to forget everything about the past and the future and just live in the present enjoying whatever is possible within the time they planned to leave the world. Still I get a jitter imagining the situation that was picturised.
2)Azhagiya kanne uravugal neeye in "Udhirippookkal". The song has nothing artificial about it as against songs that are picturised in movies. It shows the genuine love of a woman for her man and her children. The love between the children and the mother are shown as a melliya nool poondra paasam which is hidden but strong. The song is picturised in such a way that the woman who is in grief is a mother who has to take care of her little children and also has to think about her future without her husband who is not hers anymore. Her sadness, the children's innocence and the unknowingness of the future is so beautifully portrayed. The lost look in the mother's eyes (Aswini) and her tender love for her children are expressed beautifully. The line "manjal endrendrum nilaianadhu mazhai vandhalumE kalaiadhadhu" shows her strong love for her husband. The two children playing around the banks of the river, helping their mom in washing clothes and having fun is portayed for the line "sorgam eppodhum nam veetilE adhai naan kangirEn un kannilE". I just love this song.

My favourites in terms of picturisation are :
1. "andhimazhai pozhigiRadhu.." - This song was taken with a (then) maximum of about 85 or so shots. (Those days, everytime the song was played, I used to count the number of shots..!)I like the silhoutte for the interlude that has TSG's aalObanai..
2. "kaNNe kalaimaane.." and the other songs in mOOnDRAm piRai. BaluMahendra's picturisation is simply poetic and really enjoyable.
3. "poththi vechcha malligai mottu.." in maNvAsanai. Especially the prelude..VOW, I always wonder if music was composed for the scene or the otherway around. (Ofcourse, it was music first, then Barathiraajaa's visuals..)

It is becoming a pleasure to second someone's opinion that stating a new one.
Pagalavan, two of three songs are marvellous. Esp. the prelude to andhimazhai. Children in the orphanage start a choir kind of a song, the beat then blends in to it and the song unfolds....anthap paadalil involve aana anaivarum, including vairamuthu....vaazhga.
kaNNe kalaimaanE is in no way inferior. When the second interlude starts, the movemnt of the camera is soooo beautiful. You have to see to beleive it.

Sorry for diverting from the topic. IMO, In general all Bharathiraaja's films have songs where Devadhais run in gumbals. In particular what I do not like in his songs is that he will shoot in a way that camera goes into the hero and heroine's nose(very close shots). In the telugu version of "alaigal Oyvadhillai", I got scared when Aruna's muttaikaN was shown in a close up shot.
And things are always shown in slow-motion when it comes to songs in his movies. OrE madhiri pose koduthukkondu Herovum heroineum palvEru idaththil nirpaargal. Indha madhiri shotsgallelam eduththaal eppadi nam padangal Oscar vangamudiyum?

I got to agree that valaiosai kalakala... in Sathya is one of my favourite songs both for the music and its excellent picturisation. Again, the song is COMPLETELY IN THE BACKGROUND with Kamal and Amala going about their lives.
I love the scene where Kamal starts "knotting" his neck-tie around Amala's neck standing behind her. She looks down and Kamal has to lift her chin to make it easy for his hands in front of her throat to make the knot. Later slowly he realises the VANTAGE position of exposing Amala's beautiful neck and in the pretext of completing the knot starts exploring her neck and so on..... She realises this after a few seconds and pulls herself off his grip and grabs his "viv Richards" beard trying to inflict some pain. Later she acts as if she is going land some punches and flexes her arm to reveal her puny biceps when Kamal takes a careful look almost searching for her biceps once again making fun of her.
I should also mention that travelling with a loved one in a Madras bus is quite romantically potrayed by the director in this song. Also towards the very end of the song when Kamal finally agrees to come into the bus from the footboard and is facing Amala, the driver applies the brakes all of a sudden thrusting all the passengers forward. As expected Kamals face comes to a rest on Amala's cheek as she closes her eyes and potrays absolute ecstacy.
Another not so popular movie of Balumahendra is a movie called "Kanne Kalaimane" by Banuchander and Archana. This is really a very good movie but did not succeed much boxoffice wise. However, there is an excellent song in this movie which compares with Ennulle... of Valli. The song is "Neerveezhchi thee mootuthe, Thee kooda KuLir kayuthe..." If you have not listened to this song I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO SO AT THE EARLIEST". SJ has done a wonderful job. The picturisation is excellent with Archana being potrayed as a tribal women caught in the web of love. The initial scenes which show Archana having a shower in a waterfall is breathtaking. The scenes are definitely erotic but by no means vulgar. I do not want to elaborate more than this but the nature and visuals are really a feast especially when added to the enchanting melody composed by Raja.
As I have not seen this song being mentioned by TFMers, PLEASE RESPOND if you have enjoyed this song.

Hello Sathiya keerthi!
I think Sathya was directed by Suresh Krishna. The photography was by some north Indian cinematographer. Agreed, the wind does play havoc with Amala's sari in an interesting way?!!
Another beautiful song:
Has anybody seen Priya O Priya, one of the earlier movies of Maniratnam initially taken in Kanada and dubbed in Tamil later. If you have not seen this movie I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. Both the story/plot and acting are quite enjoyable yet simple and down to earth. The music by Raja is great as usual. There is a beautiful duet sung by Mano and Chitra which goes like "Paniyil nanaiyum pookaL irandu, puthithai kavithai ezhuthum indru, mazhai thooralilum, malaichaaralilum, kuLir kondathu malar chendu..." Whenever I listen to this song it rejuvenates me. I think there must exist audio-responsive pleasure center in my brain which gets stimulated by the right combination of music & words to give what people sometimes describe as a "KICK". The picturisation of this song again is somewhat similar to Andhimazhai...
in that there is rain and lovers but PC Sriram has in his own way writen a poem with this song potrayal.
Please respond if anybody has enjoyed this song.

Your description of 'vaLaiyOsai' brought everything I had in mind. I did not want to post such a big message and hence pointed out only the most wonderful part of the song. neengaL sonna ovvoru vaarthaiyum uNmai.
BTW, when the second interlude starts as 'laa la laa la laa laa' there is flute piece going on in the background. Has anybody noticed it?
Coming to your 'neerveezhchi' - I have mentioned about this song in another thread (IR copy adiththa paadalgaL). This song was scored for 'Auto Raja' as 'sangaththil paadaatha kavithai'. IR then used the same tune for Balu's mallu movie 'OLangaL' as 'thumbi vaa'. He used the same tune again in this song. 3 thadavi use paNNum aLavukku antha tune IRkku pidikkum enRu ninaikkiREn. IT IS A MAGNIFICIENT SONG. Your mention of that song has induced a desire to see the movie. I did not know it was a Balu Mahendra movie.
One correction in your second mail - DID YOU KNOW THAT THE PHOTOGRAPHY FOR 'O..PRIYA..PRIYA' (MAnirathnam's first movie - Pallavi Anupallavi in Kannada - dubbed in Tamil) WAS HANDLED BY NONE OTHER THAN BALU MAHENDRA? It was not P.C.Sriram.

Thanks Arvind for the information about Oh priya priya's cinematographer. It just goes to prove the fact that "Balumahendra+ Raja" hardly ever fail to deliver.
Have you noticed that Raja had used the song "Michelle..." a famous and beautiful Beatles number in a couple of his movies. As usual some spectacular photography by Balumahendra in "moondram pirai" is hard to miss. There is a scene where "Silku" is shown walking down a wooded misty morning in Kothagiri where the angular rays of the sun inbetween the branches periodically accentuate silk's/nature's beauty by the dark/light/shadow effect. She is wearing a walkman and in the background "Michelle..." gently breezes past, and you're thinking God this is as close as you can get to heaven.
In Mouna Ragam again there is a scene when Revathi finally starts to accepts Mohan and is trying to prepare a meal where a small red two-in-one in the corner of the kitchen top again plays "Michellle.."
Has anybody noticed this before?
Also, Aravind about the start of the second interlude in Valaiosai.. the La la la... by Lata is great. If I recall the camera shows both Kamal and Amala in a small row boat & Amala making ripples in the surrounding water and floating paper boats.

Picturisation of love songs is rather a common aspect in tamil movies and doesn't demand much acting talents from the concerned actors. There aren't many songs which explain the emotional side and psychology of a person in a real-life situation. I would say that "kana kAnum kangaL mella" in Agni Satchi and "Thondu thottu indru varai" in Avatharam are those songs which beautifully those human feelings.
1)"kana kAnum kaNgaL mella" - is a song par excellence. Saritha's wonderful acting adds to the picturisation. Saritha suffers from a emotional breakdown. Sivakumar is her husband who understands her problem and tries to make her sleep and forget all her problems. The Director has beautifully portrayed Saritha's emotional struggles as she imagines a lady who rather dances(rather tramples ) in a deserted land . Sivakumar treats her like a child and tries to pacifies her. Saritha is shown to be in a confused state as she could not understand herself as sometimes she is alright and often her mind touches the lowest ebb of pathos. Sivakumar's caring and love for his wife is shown in the by his expressions(his varuththam and yekkam in his eyes )and the blow-up shot of Saritha he has in his bedroom (appa! andha kaNgaL...).
2)I was shocked and speechless after I saw "Thondu thottu indru varai" in Avatharam. It is a very forceful song. Revathi and Nasser should have been given a National Award for their acting in this movie, especially this song. Nasser is a koothu kattugira aaL who is a very innocent man who comes from a village to Madras to make money. He brings Revathi with her who is blind and who does not have anyone. The villian is also a Koothu kattugiravan from the same village and by unfair means he has become rich and settled in Madras. He lures Nasser of getting him a role in the film industry. And while Nasser is gone, the villian rapes Revathi and murders her and also blames Nasser for that and gets him arrested. This shocks Nasser and he breaks down. He escapes jail and hides himself in a forest. He makes a doll and applies all colors to it and makes it to look like Revathi while she was dead. The doll itself looks eerie with all blood marks and also has tears from its eyes. The song is played in the background when Nasser imagines that the doll that looks like Revathi starts dancing in the forest. The scene haunts the human mind more because Revathi's face is made up like a doll and she also dances like one. The song is portrayed so beautifully that Director shows the state of mind of Nasser - he is in trauma and looks very pathetic after the loss of the beloved and who is also building his inner energy to take revenge against the villian. ONE SHOULD SEE THIS SONG TO REALLY KNOW THE FORCE OF THE SONG . The song goes like this :(IR pattu eppadi porundhugiradhu endru sollavum vEnduma?)
"thondu thottu indru varai ezhai ennum jenmathukku thunbam ayya
inbam ennum ezhaikkellAm vanmam kondE thunbam thandhaal thollai ayya

The song in Kshatriyan - Maalayil Yaaro Manadhodu pesa ...sung by ?? had been very beautifully picurised on Bhanupriya.
Similarly Kannuku maiyazhaghu song in Puthya Mugam - picurised on Revathy and Suresh Menon was also a good one.

I also did not miss programmes on TV, like oliyum oLiyum, concerned with TFM. Now that Sun, Raj and Vijay are overfeeding us with TFM, I don't mind missing a few programmes - They will repeat it anyway.
Good songs in 'sa.o.sa' - 'yaar azhaiththathu kanavu raaNiyaa (SPB's humming in the beginning is great) and 'yaarOdu yaarO' (SPB).
Coming to Balu Mahendra and Mahendran. You know why Mahendran movies like 'nenjaththaik kiLLaathE', 'uthirip pUkkaL' and 'jaani' were Visual treats? The camera was handled by Balu Mahendra for these movies also.

Are you sure? The camera work in 'azagiya kaNNE' and 'senorita' is so characteristic of Balu Mahendra. No doubt that Ashok Kumar is a wonderful cinematographer, but I have my own doubts.

Arvind:
Pagal is right - all the movies were by Ashokkumar.
Actually from Uthirip pookal only, AKumar got
the recognition.
cp:
I missed your AvathAram song explanation by few days.
I was watching that movie in SUN TV last week,
and I was kind of VERY restless/bored/irritated
by the last half hour where Nasar is doing
all the KIRIKKU stuff and try to kill the villain.
If I had read your explanation before, probably
I would have enjoyed it.
Acting and music was good in that movie - otherwise
it is a junky - definitely it dosn't deserve
any national award - the award it got from
State Govt. is enough.
I will say KARAKATTAKARAN was a much better movie
than AVATHARAM.
coming to the topic, in the new films, the best
picturaization I liked are by RAJINI and DEVA..
you should have guessed them now....
AthandA ithAnda - from Arunachalam and
nAn AutokAran - from bAshA.
I have seen those two songs umpteen times but love
to see them again - RAJINI was soooooper.
NOTE: I didn't like the picturaization in "oruvan oruvan" from Muthu.
Another one I like is from movie ???? by kathuri raaja..
panju mittai selai katti pachai vaNNa ravikai pOttu
dance steps by kusbu, oorvasi and nepolian
were so cool and causal. I think the MD is DEVA.

BLASPHEMY !
Karagaattakkaaran is better than Avathaaram ?
Karagaattakkaaran is a time-pass movie with heavy lifting of scenes from Thillana Mohanaambal and Kudumbam oru Kadhambam (vazhaipazham joke). The only redeeming feetures in the movie was Koundamani/Senthil and IR's music. The karagam dances were a sham with cinematic masala.
Avathaaram is a original with superb characterisation. The state of therukooththu art form and therukkooththu kalaignars were treated with a lot of empathy by Nasser. The budding of love between Nasser and Revathy is one of the best ever in Tamil cinema. Such subtelity is too good for Tamil cinema : none of the Tamil masala magazines understood it. For them the hero has to sing a duet with diamundu/vaali's pachai varigal or it has to be explicitly stated with such cliches : 'En idhayam kaanamal poi vittadhu/en idhayam unnidam uLLadha'.
The amount of thought/work which went into Avathaaram is seen in every frame.
While Karagattakkaran was just a time-pass movie which got lucky at the box-office bcos of comedy and IR's music.

'panju mittai' is from ettuppati raasaa. Khushboo's dance was good . Agreed. But did you see 'kottai paakku' from 'naattaamai'. The steps are so similar.

Yes PG
I loved every bit of the movie// You have to appreciate the histrionics of the villian (Hey i forgot his name) Things were so very natural!! Even now i remember vividly the nite i saw the (2nd show)movie in Kamala theater in VPalani// Every song was greeted with whistles and traditional ticket rains// The crowd was on its feet when it came to Thenral vandhu theendumbodhu// The last 30 minutes were really different// Naser trying to seek revenge with whatever skills he knows - koothu kattuvadhu - the way he goes around dancing and creating a fear psychosis in the villian's mind is great// You need to mention the poem the villian narrates to instill confidence and strength (Got it he is Paasi!!)
When Naser is accused of raping and killing revathi, in the court, the judge asks naser if he has got anything to say// Naser sings a song in turn// its kind of"Olam" that usually appears in koothu ( kind of thaarai pulambal in Raamayanam, Paanchaali's woes etc.,)Dont you think it was different? I was impressed//
Paasi the villian seendufies revathi the blind with her kolusu by holding it in his mouth and going around revathi// you ought see the movie for the picturization and music// just the sound of ringing kolusu fills the theater// nothing else// with fear written all over revathi's face, the scene was great//
The best part of the movie is the last minute in the movie// Naser kills paasi and by that time Srividhya and Naser's friends sight Naser// They are shocked// So is Naser!! He tries to say that he was overtly possessed by revathi's demise and all he knew was revenge!! The moment he had killed the villian, and his friends sight him, Naser is back to normal and whatever had possessed him has left!! At this time, if you listen closesly, the bgm from maestro is haunting - the "vandhu vandhu poguthamma, ennamellam vannamamma" line is played slowly, very slowly at the time Naser looks at the camera and the screen drops - Naser's eyes are full of remorse but not hatred!! OH Great!! That he was caught between the innocent, pellucid love and revenge!! Kind of " I had no other go" look!!!
The best movie I have seen of late!!

Hi Aravind.
I am sorry to hear that the songs/picturisation
in Raman Abdullah were dissapointing to you.
Currently, I am on vacation, in Madras( I study/work)
in USA) and happen to see RA in Anu Ega theater yesterday.
I differ from your assessment. The songs are great
and the picturisation is just poetry. I am writing
from Madras and hence will close with a short message.

Shashi
The picturisation was nothing new for BM. It has always been poetry. Same is he case with songs. IR songs have always been at least good. But after so much of 'poetry' and 'great' songs, I expected something out of the world and was disappointed. We will discuss about this after you return to USA.
