Bhoori:
The songs in Shanthi are definitely under-rated. I remembered seeing that movie long ago and I remember it mostly for songs, though the story was quite good. yArandha nilavu is easily my favorite (I have a friend who will give an arm to hear that song) and I think that vAzhdhu pArka vEndum is one of the best male duets that I have heard (my favorite being ponnudru kandEn, peNNangu illai from padiththAl mattum pOdhumA). Glad you enjoyed the movie.

sathi, the song is in "Idayaththil Nee". All songs are superb in this movie, "Odivathu pol idayirukkum", "Poo varayum poongodiye", "uravu Endroru sollirunthaal" etc. Bhoori ,NeengaLum SFO -wa ? Enge? Puthayal , Mailbag-il irunthy yeduththu paaththeengaLa ?

Bhasker, I thought , the songs of Shanti were very popular. Example : Oorengum maappiLLai oorvalam (PS), YeNNaththile nee netru vanthai (PS) and ofcourse the songs you have mentioned.

Kooththan-II:
You are right. The songs were popular though not as much as the ones from some of the other Sivaji movies. For example, when I mention songs like "senthoor murugan" and "nenjathilE nee netru vandhai", people recognize the song but don't have a strong memory of which movie it came from.

Boori,
I reside in a small town located in the state of Missouri. I don't have opportunity to see old tamil movies. Even the indian stores around in kansas city carry mostly north indian (Hindi)movies. Anyway, I found the answer to my question to you. The song "yaar sirithal enna ingu yaar azuthal enna" sung by P.b.sreenivas in the movie "Idhathill nee". I found this info in tmfpage,pbs_ songs.

sorry, I spelled the movie name wrong. It is Ithayathil Nee.

Koothan,
I should have read your response before typing in. Thanks for confirming the movie. I read good article about P.B.Sreenivas and amazed how much work he put in for tamil Songs. One of the song keeps hitting my head most of the time is his "Thenneg Keetru OOngalilee" bring back memories of thengai marrams at my Thatha's place.

Pal: that's right - was listening to it last night.
BTW, the intamm site (see URL above), also has interviews with PB Srinivos, LR Eswari, AP Komala, P. Leela, and MS Rajeswari.
Anyone know the movie/MD/lyricist for the following (70s?):
1. ponnenna poovenna kanne un kannaadi ullathin munne.... Jeyachandran
2. andha pakkam paarthavan romeo...unknown singer

Kishore, Sriram Lakshman:
"andha pakkam vAzhthavan Romeo" is sung by Sai Baba for Nagesh in veettukku veedu. Very smooth one, that.
sathi:
"thennangeetru oonjalilE" is really melodious. Remember seeing it in an episode of "oliyum oLiyum". It is uniquely picturized because it is sung in the background. When the hero is singing, they show the heroine and vice versa. I remember L.Vijayalakshmi. Anyone remember who the hero was?

Thanks for the info - I bought a CD called kathambamalai (MSV, KVM) that has no info on MDs/lyricists/movies etc which is where these 2 songs were from.
BTW, I'm visiting Tamilnadu in Dec-Jan this year. Any suggestions on must buy albums/songs and where to get them. So far, I plan to be in Madras, Bangalore, and Thanjavur.

Kishore
You may browse through the Audio section in the new Spencer Plaza (Mall) in madras. I found some CD's of old films there when i visited couple of weeks back. There were collections (2 or 3) on PBS, TMS, PS, SJ, MGR , Sivaji, and IR. The other option is to get recordable CD's (CD-R, sony's) from here and visit those music shops in Madras or other towns where they record songs from CD to CD. They usually have awesome collections on them. I was charged Rs. 125 per CD(i gave my own blank sony CDs purchased from here, Walmart sells at around $4 for 5 CDs ) recording at trichy and one can put as much as 16 to 20 old songs on one CD.
good luck!

RPG has been coming out with series of cassettes and CDs called Legends. I bought a Kannadhasan Legends collection (cassettes) which is terrific. You may want to look at them.

Ramesh & Bhasker: Thanks for the suggestions. Any opinions on the new Golden Hour albums? They're supposed to be digitally remastered classics - AM Raja/P Susheela duets, SPB solos, KJY duets, and the ones you mention Ramesh. Not sure if this is what you're referring to. BTW, don't they have CD-Rs' in India? Or is it more costly there?

Ok, I know I'm sounding like a broken record - but check out the oLioviyam section on INTAMM. The back issues have interviews with/about TR Pappa, SJ, Kannadasan & MKT. There is also an interview with a gentleman who has collected 54,000 tamil songs and 1600 hindi songs. He is Mr. Ali Khan, living in Madras. http://www.intamm.com/back/olioviyam/oviammar/aligan.htm
I hope to visit him in Madras, if things work out. BTW, I have nothing to do with INTAMM - except to say awesome site! Second only to TFM on my list.

Bhasker:
'Thennankeetru oonjalile' was sung by L.Vijayalakshmi and K.vijayan in the movie Padhai theriyuthu par.The lyrics are by Jayakanthan and music by M.B.Srinivasan.Most of the persons affiliated with the movie had leftist leanings and the movie has a labor movement theme. It was a good slow moving movie.
Dravida ponnade is in Malayitta mangai and is the title song.Music is of course by Visvanathan -Ramamurthy.It has some of the most lovely songs.

Nice song! If i recollect properly, this song was not so popular as others songs like "thedralOdu undan piRanthAL", "thanjai periya kOyil pallAndu vAzhgave..", "nAthanai kaNdenadi en thOzhi". It is surprising to see that PS is not among those who sung this number. BTW , who sang "nAthanai kaNdenadi.."? PS? Kunnakkudi Vaidhyanathan sounds perfect for historical/bhakthi movies. As for as lyrics is concerned, for a lyricist of kannadasan's stature, this is run-of-the-mill stuff from him.
