hi,
1) in one of his earlier telugu movies, IR did what is now a days called remix. movie was "sri kanaka mahalakshmi recording dance troupe" where lesser known songs of older heroes were set to slightly modern beats and I think he also changes the tunes slightly. they sound really good ...I don't know if anyone did this before him.
2) In one more movie of the same director Vamsi, called "detective narada" there's this very interesting song where the lines of one old telugu hit are alternated with a new song. like, chitra sings one line --the original of the movie, and SPB sings the next line from the old song in the old tune. the way IR seamlessly matches both the tunes is really cool ... only I thought the choice of that particular old song was not the best one, so the end concoction cannot be termed a gem ...
any more such expmts..???

On an analysis, it looks like IR is the one who included many devotional passages (Tamil/Sanskrit slokas) in his songs, to the maximum possible extent, within the context of the situation. Eg.
1) Starting from 'Janani Janani' of Thai Moogambigai (Adi Shankara's Kanaka Dhara)
2) 'Nadhiyil Aadum Poovanam' from Kadhal Oviyum (again Adi Shankara's)
3) 'Kadhal Oviyum' from Alaigal Oyvathillai (ShatamAnam Bhavati stotram)
4) 'Thendralai KandukoLLu MAnE' from Nilave Mugam Kattu (he has done a voice-over of 'Neelotpala patrAni' slokam and its
Tamil translation, which beautifully merges with the 2nd interlude of the song)
5) 'PArtha Vizhi' song from Guna (NAyagi NAnmugi - Abirami Anthathi)
6) Starting of 'NAdha Vinodhangal' from Salangai Oli (Kalidasa's Raghuvamsam - 'Vagarthaviva Samprukthau')
etc. etc. Please add the left-outs.
I see the above as his love for literature and his staunch devotion. His efforts to popularize these should be appreciated.
Your comments welcome.

Even IR claims that BVTHR needs a lot of improvements. May B its better if they perform their experiments at home than for real movies. But I am sure, BVTHR will one day become as popular as Chitra based on her latest performance in Tiruneveli, just a little bit more spontaneous and no truncations, she will succeed!!

what about the voice overlays in the song 'en kanmani en kAdhali ila mAngani' from film 'chittukkuruvi'? Great innovation ( experiment??) right??

Haris,
I believe thats a technique called "Counter- Point" where a question is raised and before the question is completed ( I mean somewhere in the middle of the time measure) the other singer follows with an answer. This is usually done with 2 different instruments. But IR did it with two different singers.
IR is probably the first one to experiment a counter point in TFM.

Dorai,
You are talking about 2 singers - with one starting - before the others finishes. ( this teknik is used in 'poomalayE thOl sEravA'.
But the teknik in 'en kanmani en kAdhali ila mAngani' - is the same singer's voice starts - before the previous line in his OWN voice completes.
Can u give some Counter-Point instrumental examples of IR??

Enough done and achieved, I need IR to experiment with one thing. Try a new form of sound for TFM. He tried doing this in a very few movies (that I know). He tried doing it in Guru (this is his personal best in the 90's, sans the commercial hits). Guru had a total different sound, arrangements and composition. He never tried that approach in any of the movies that followed it. ARR introduced a new form of sound in Roja. After that he tired new in Dil Se and to a very little extent in 1947 & Zubeida. I'm kind of getting tired and bored of the patterns of ARR and the aatu mandhai which follow him.
I was amazed when Santana came up with a great score for his "Supernatural". The point here is, IR has the capability and he can for sure create a new pattern. It’s not that ARR or anyone else can't do it. But I firmly believe ONLY IR can do it with perfection. Can he give me an another GURU (though an another Jhonny is my greedy wish).

Santana in Supernatural..had associated with many popular younger artists and fused his music with new genres and styles to make his album more contemporary and marketable. Will IR do the same ?

cosmicfan......true Santana teamed up with younger artists like Rob Thomas and Lauryn Hill (it did have Eric Clapton too), but the point to be noted was, the compositions were doen by Santana. ALso these artists were singers (like SPB, Shankar M). So IR need not collaborate with youund MD's. ALl he had to do is fersh voices (genuine Tamizh pronouncing) like close to what he tried in Bharathi.

how much ever Santana (i like the guitar) and other composers or singers colloborate, you will never get an opening theme and interludes as IR gave for the ssong, Mudhal mudhalaha kaadal duet paada vendhene... to date there is no single musician or composer who came up to that heights of composing...
Ir does not need the likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber to continue a certain genre of music... What IR and his fans need is who in the heaven can measure the amount of creativity of IR and his incomparable genius for the rest of the world to know for generations to come....
i am asking not for santana, but for a santa claus for music here...

1) Starting from 'Janani Janani' of Thai Moogambigai (Adi Shankara's Kanaka Dhara)
2) 'Nadhiyil Aadum Poovanam' from Kadhal Oviyum (again Adi Shankara's)
Venkatesh, actually the shiva sakya yuktho - used in "Janani Janani" avigyaanam anthasthimira - used in "Nadhiyil aadum" are slokaas from Adi Shankara's soundarya lahari.
and in both songs IR himself rendered those slokaas and took plenty of care in pronouncing them correctly.

And if you would notice, the movie had five songs, and in the cassette cover, the credits said "songs 2,3,4 & 5 composed by Ilaiyaraaja" There was no mention of the composer for 1st song. When the whole lot of MDs were copying 100% from other songs and claiming as their own, this songs had 50% Ilaiyaraaja composition and he didn't want to claim it as his. Other MDs have a lot to learn from IR.
