That is good news for IR, by the way who was in the Panel? any idea. I know in one of the Panels, when IR got one of his national awards it was Prem Nazir! Another time, I think it was Salilda himself? Any info on this panel businessu?

It is indeed interesting to see how IR manages a national award for the singers of his tunes but not for himself. Four occassions:
(1) inji iduppazagi - SJ
(2) paayali chun mun - Chitra
(3) mayil pOla - Bhavadhaarini
(4) Azagi song - Sadhana Sargam

I would like to say something to Sadhana Sagam...
"Un kuthamaa, Nam Kuthamaa Yaaru senja Kuthamithu?"

MS: It is ironical that IR the music director receives partial credit through the four songs/singers who won national awards for very very ordinary compositions. :-)

Other IR compositions that got National award for the Singers are :
"Paadariyen Padippariyen" in Sindhu Bhairavi for Chitra
"Sendhoora poovae" for S.Janaki

It is wrong to say that so-and-so got an award for this particular song. An award recognises the singer/artiste's work in the entire Film. Not just one song. So say SJ got an award for 16 Vayadhinile or Chitra for Sindhu Bhairavi, or VJ for Swati Kiranam. These singers also had other songs in the same film which were just as well received as the ones you single out above!

naaz: The official list of national awards usually identifies the song for which the singer is given the award. There were occasions when only the name of the movie was identified (KJY for SOPANAM, for example). Awards for music direction is for the whole movie.
Kerala State awards have a background music category too, in addition to the main one.

See, therein lies the problem (IMO). Do they identify "award" calibre scenes when they hand out the actor/ actress trophies/citations? I wonder. Unless it happens to be the only song in the movie, and that too a solo (SJ Oppol) then it is fair to identify it as such along side the song. I have seen the National Award for Playback Singer - both Plaque/citation - and they bear Name of the film, with the name of the singer. Of course,t he signature and rubber stamp of the President too.
At least, 'til the early nineties this used to be the case. I wonder if the song/singer/award id. is recent. Would you happen to know, GV?
(For instance it becomes very difficult to select one song from Lekin or Umrao Jaan - and say this is the one that has award written all over it. In these films, each song is worthy of a national award - and each song is beyond a national award too. LM and AB won BPBS for those films. )

this award should silence the critics of sadhana sargham. a NA is an achievement. she deserves it well and she sang the song beautifully, melodiously. Moreover she has sung under the great IR. Sadhana, keep it up! Sadhana detractors - thumbs down for you :-(

Nobody said that Sadhana Sargam's voice was not appealing, or moving or enchanting. The criticism SS has received has been completely about her tamizh pronunciation and nuancing (which, with or without the national award, she still lacks.) that is evident in every song so far. Singing a song beautifully is not the same as singing the song correctly.

Kum_laden:
There is an upper limit to how obnoxious one might be....or there isnt any such? A singer of high merit, who was a child prodigy, who picked up nuances of classical music at the age of less than 7, who has recorded superhits in nearly every Indian language, who has sung with all the top MDs of TFM today (Karthik Raaja, Ilayaraaja, A R Rahman, Vidyasaagar, Devaa, Harris Jeyaraj.................), who has sung with N Raajam and Amjad Ali Khan and Ravindra Jain and....., who is a popular singer both in the North and South. Why should she need to beg someone for an award? The national awards jury knew what they did when they gave it to her. They could have given to another lady...but no, it was Sadhana who was their choice. And again, the song has been a popular one amongst the public.

Hi av,
I am not against any award to anyone for I dont care about awards (whethet my favourite singer gets the award or not!). Your reasoning like she has sung with all top directors, she is a child prodigy , given superhits on every language, and the song has been popular one... all maybe/are TRUE. But you are not answering the point naaz brought about her tamizh pronunciation and nuancing. I too feel the same way. No one going to crib if she gets award for a song in Hindi (which I guess may be the language she knows).
But I do not like the way she has sung some of the Tamil songs ( like snagidhane...). I dont have any complains about the quality of her voice or melody but she very much sounds like that of a person who does not know Tamil.(I know that is the truth). Is it too much to expect, if one wants songs to be sung with native accent?
May be this is the trend, when I see people(Many youngsters especially the ones who do compering in TVs etc.) who may be knowing Tamil very well still speak as though they know Tamil as a III language. May be this generation would like to hear Tamil the way SS sings. Nothing wrong about that. It is all individual preferences. But others do have the right to differ from this.

Your last paragraph (above) zeros in on the essential loss. To a tamizh generation that does not know its vallinams from it mellinams, and its edhugais from its monais, anything and everything is "great." If you value your own language, you will study/know it deeply, you will search out its riches. And then you will demand that others measure up!
But if Video Jockeys are the best tamizh teachers around, as they say : thalaikku mele vellam kaal ponaal yenna,....You get my drift.

Higher ups are just trying to keep ilaiyaraaja appeased..somehow the whole crowd is behind rahman but they know ilaiyaraaja is the Maestro..whenever they get a chance (even a somewhat quality song of his becomes a hit, they are trying to give the award to him)...I dont like this song as much as the other award winners from i.raaja ..but this is an encouragement for ilaiyaraaja..let us hope the master composer gets back into the groove (which he lost because rahman toppled him from his numero uno position)

all credit goes to sadhana....and it was an award for best singer. not best MD. her tamil has definitely improved over the years..(u can no way brand me as one of those in a "tamizh generation that does not know its vallinams from it mellinams, and its edhugais from its monais, anything and everything is "great." as i studied tamil for 10 years) heck she can even sing tamil songs without looking at the lyrics. she deserved this award.
congrats sadhana.

(respectfully)I am sure IR cared for his song more than all of us put together.
Anyways... I had clearly quoted KUM LADEN - he says that SS must have rung up IR asking for an award. This is a sad statement, one of the saddest ones I have read. It casts aspersions on two people -
1)Sadhana - who is humility and sweetness personified in every sense
2)On Ilayaraaja - a person whose accomplishments are so vast and diverse that he wouldnt even care or even NEED to lobby for a national award. His achievements, speed of composition, music sense, versatility far transcend any listener's expectations. He is hardly the one who would lobby.
Hope I have made it clear!
