Manisegaran,
There is always a need for your postings. Feel free to drop in anytime at the DF and give it some history, class, and much needed maturity. As always I learned so much from your postings. Thanks again for your amazing memory and recollection.

Thanks, Manisakharan.
BTW, how old are you? (if I am not inquisitive!)
Of 'Vandhanadi Thozhi' I have this to tell you:
When I asked PS once to mention her most unforgettable song, she said 'Mannavan Vandhaanadi'.
Her exact words were:
'Romba Kashtappattu Padina Pattu Illaya'.
- And she also said that the recording was over in just 4 hours!
One the original rhythms of KVM is, according to TMS:
'Manapaarai Madu Katti Maayavaram...'
-which he said was just followed by many many MDs who came thereafter!

I got several info from KVM himself. In those days the MDs had categorised playback singers for various moods and purposes. K Jamunarani for glamour. TK Bagavathy for sad songs, P. Leela for dance songs, MS Rjeswary for children songs etc. But P.Suseela was used for all moods. When Thiruvarut Chelvar was in the production stage, the famous P.Leela who used to sing for powerful dance tunes was slowly retiring
Some of the famous dance songs of P.Leela are:
1Kathiruppan Kamalakkannan-U-puthiran
2 Manamogana maranthupovena-Puthumaipithan
3 Vel velluma en vizh velluma-Magalechumy
3.Aasai konda nenju rendu pesuginra pothu-Irumbuthirai
4,Ketpathellam Kathal Keethangale-Illara Jothi
5.Raja Magal--VK Valiban
6.Kodi Naattuven-Kathanayagi
But KVM had to go for a singer who could sing out the dance song only too well. In the absence of P.Leela he wanted to use P.Suseela. Many discouraged KVM. But KVM took it as achallenge to prove to the cinecircle that PS could sing the song very well. Ant of course she did and P.Suseela proved her talent. Im sure PS would have told you this too.
Regarding Manapparai Maadukatti, Maruthakazi told me that this was the first song he wrote for APN's first movie Makkalai Petra Magarasi taken under the Laksmi pictures. Maruthakazi was told to combine the farming trade and the names of famous farming districts in Tamilnadu which he gladly did. It seems this song brought great fame for KVM, Maruthakazi and TMS for a long time to come. TMS again proved to be a very versatlie singer using typical village accent in this song. This film was produced in 1956 and released in 1959. This song was played almost daily in the AIRadio Tamilnadu stations for many months to come. After this film, KVM made it a point to use Maruthakazi for several village based songs- Vannakkili, Pillai Kani amuthu, Thai Piranthaal Vazhi Pirakkum, Vivasayee etc.
The places mentioned in the song are:
Manpparai
Mayavaram
Aathoor
Marutha Jilla
Pollachi
Viruthunagar
I am sorry I cannot comment on the raga of this song. I do not know much about ragas.
Regarding my age
I am 43, born on 28 February 1955. Pothumo Intha info?

I agree that P.Suseela's voice suits almost all heroines. Therefore her voice could be easily termed as heroine's voice as you rightly put it.
I have a collection of a few thousand songs in audio cassette, including those of P.Leela.I also have a few hundred songs in video cassette.
I am from Malaysia.

K.V. Mahadevan and K.J Yesudas would have made a good team in carnatic based movie songs, but this never happened in Tamil films (to the best of my information). I have a few KVM/KJY songs (classical) from Telugu movies. The
only Tamil song I have of this team is "Vaanam engei mudigiradhu..." from PAAY MARA KAPPAL. Does anyone know of any other songs?

I don't know about carnatic based songs, but KJJ
sang some good songs under KVM in the MGR movie,
Pallandu Vazhga..
pOi vaa nadhi alaiyE,
enna sugam

ondrE kulam endru paaduvOm
etc.

Ragapriyan,
Another good song in the movie is "onrE kulam enru pAduvOm, oruvanE dEvan enru pOtruvOm". Excellent song!! soulful rendering by KJY!!! not to forget the "seishtais" of M N Nambiar in that song.

Another salient feature of KVM's creations was that he composed different tunes for stanzas.Eg :- Mayakkam enathu thaayagam, Enni rendu pathinaaru vayathu, Entha Oor endravane etc.
Guys, listen to his "Sirivennila" in Telugu. Superb compositions, superb singing by SPB, superb fulte pieces by Hariprasad Chourasia.

GV,
One more KJY/KVM combo is the song "Mazhai Vizhum Kodiyena" from the movie, "Thoongaatha Kannindru Ondru". The same movie also had the classic, "Nee Azhaiththathu Pol Oru Gnyaabagam" by SPB.

Sriram Lakshman,
The song "Endha Oor Endravane, Irunda OoraiChchollava?" is a great song by KVM (Was it rendered by PB Sreenivas?); So melodious and so modern... It clearly shows his versatility and also that he was well ahead of his times.

Unnai Kaanadha kannum kaanala from Idayakamalam is a masterpiece song followed by Malargal nanaidana paniyale from the same movie. KVM is a classical genius. There is no doubt about it.

When I met KVM in 1984 he told me that his all-time favourite songs, amongst others are:
1. Malarkal nanainthana paniyale-Idhaya Kamalam
2. Kalaimakal kai porule- Vasantha Maligai
3. Amuthum thenum etharku-Thai piranthaal vazhi pirakum
4. Arupadai veedu konda thirumurua-Kanthan Karunai

Neels, yes it was sung by PBS. I like ThoL kanden ThoLE kanden by PBS for KVM.
Mani, I am glad that "Malarkal.." is his favourite. Romba anubavichu compose seitha paadal. Every note , every piece in that song is memorable. Songs 3 and 4 are brilliant too.
KVM did use counter melodies in some his songs to good effect. "VeLLI nila mutrathile" (with, I think , a Shehnai playing the counter melody when TMS sings) comes to mind
immediately.
His "Aayiram kaN pothathu VaNNakkiliye" in "Paavai ViLakku" sung by CSJ (the same melody is played in "Thillana MoganambaL) set to "Maand" Ragam had a very novel character to it.

Neels,
It is not a song as such in the movie. Remember the scene where Sivaji and AVM Rajan play the Nadhaswaram outside the palace in front of a group of people. The whole song is played in Nadhaswaram.

Hi everybody
Please listen to "Oru pakkam paarkira, Oru kanna saikira.." from Mattukara Velan. This is wonderful example of KVM's creativity. The whole melody is classically based yet has a folkish quality to it. TMS's voice with perfect articulation tries to bring but all the emotions well. Interludes not much to talk about; simple yet adequate and links the 2 stanza's perfectly.
Briefly, the pallavi is wonderfully conceived in Mohanam. The charanam opens with P,D2,N2 (like kamboji's uttarangam) and brings in that cinematic/light music touch by moving to N3 (almost like brindavana saranga). Quickly it moves back to Sankarabharanam's uttarangam and like bilahari comes back to Mohanam at the start of the Pallavi again. Just wonderful imagination by KVM!!

Since this is abt KVM may I digress a bit to his Malayalam works ? A song "Shararandhal" in Mallu by KJY is probably one of the best egs of what genius he is in scoring rhythms. the rhythm of "Ek ladki ko" with slight pace added , it came way back in 76-77. It is one of the most beautiful songs. I do not know how to explain further as I feel not many are familiar with Mallu songs.
