Do we really need them? Gaanas!!! They lack in musical content, lyrical content and everything else that it takes to make a song. Even the video for gaanas is so cheap and 3rd rate.

you are right shwetha...
we definitely don't deserve such a cheap skate songs...
but...makkals taste....is like that...what to do....
anyway, I think Gaana is suppose to be..sort fo a folk song.....which was meant for farmers back in olden days.
So you don't expect farmer, to write
"Yen akka amagalum, naan kudikum neerum ,
ore niramda, thambi, ore niramda,
kalai unavil, vadikati kopiyil,
ore rottiyai nalaithe sappithen....
athe rombe nallam irukum...
nalla irukumda..thambi....nalla irukumda"..
yetho...that's all the can, btu of course...english words are added as that is the trend
well, i think that is show it is

We need al kind of sonsg ..But the lyrics should not be vulgar ....EVery mood is associated with some group of songs and gana songs have a great response in college functions ..I cannot think of a college function without that ..SO they are absolute necessaity in TFM ,though not all movies need not have it ......
And Ganas should not be comapred with classical melodies ......The MOOD is very different ..

paran.... i don;t think folk songs and gaanas are related in any way!!! Folk songs are sposed have an alement of sensitivity...atleast that s what i think. Gaanas....are nothing but noise!!!
>>But the lyrics should not be vulgar<<
Ramki... i think bad lyrics or atleast meaningless lyrics is one of the pre-requisites of a gaana. Tell me one gaana with lyrics that is meaningful or good. I think the tune (i donno what else to call it!!!) of the gaanas are just not suitable for good or meaningful lyrics. I don;t say all the "non-gaanas" have great and meaningful lyrics. Like for eg.
** Apple pennae nee yaaro, ice cream sialye nee yaaro** doesnt have any great lyrical content. But it s not as bad as cocacola brown....

I think gana need not have very meaningfull lyrics ,but they should not vulgar lyrics and should not be absurd..Because the very tune and MOOD of ganas is enjoyment ..and this kind of enjoyment does not come when teh lyrics is meaningful!!!
STill I can tell u some songs with not so bad lyrics
Nilave Nilave -ALBUM
Kavalai Padthae sagothara ( atleast 60% of it )-Kadal Kottai
Annatha -Aboorva sagothargal
Thirupathi Yelumalai -Ninaivirukum varai
Yeppa Yeppa Iyappa -Ezhayan Siripil
These sonsg may not have greta lyrics ,but considering they are ganas ,they are good ..(But even for thsi i have to think a lot )

ice cream and coca cola .. whats the diff .. huh
new thingz come in as the society needs it .. mixing english in tamil songs is something which no one could prevent now since most ppl talk that way in chennai .. similarly gaana is based on life style seen in lowerer rungs of the society ..we simply cannot ignore them.. .. just because it sounds nasty..regarding people having bad taste .lets first improve everyones life style to be sophisticated then may be in that utopian society we could do away w/o gaanas... gaana songs are for front benchers who hear all sorts vulgar to nasty things everyday .. so gaana is needed for such people .. some people dont like melodious love songs .. some dont like gaanas.. there is enuf songs coming out in tamil lets enjoy whatever we like .. and music grow freely..

What does improving std of living of ppl got to do with doing away with gaanas???? We had no ganaas in the past... u mean to say that std of living has deteriorated only recently??!!! And songs shud NOT be written keeping in mind the way people talk!!! Colloquil-aa paatu ezhudhanumnaa i dont think we need lyricists for that. Gaanas have found entry only recently... there were gaanas earlier too...but not to this extent.
The point is that front- benchers shud be introduced to better tastes... and i guess doing away with gaanas can be one of the methods. Im sure Oruvan oruvan mudhalali and singa nadai pottu have greater appeal to the mass than Annanagar Andal and Kothavaalsavadi Lady!

language usage in day to day life has detoriorated .. common go and check out which song has better appeal .. in the street corners .. and having ban on something wont help .. forceful implementation wont work not only for gaana but for anything .. for that matter. if gaanas are not needed and no one likes it then why would some one spend money and record it and market it !!!! nothing is free in thsi world.. MONEY TALKS >> WHICHEVER SONG HAS MARKET THAT COMES OUT IN HUGE NUMBERS....

1)Gaanam - means song in tamil
2)Khana - means food in hindi
3)kana - means dream in tamil
4)Ka.Na - can be expanded anyway u wish..from kadatheru Naye(market dog)..to..Kavidhai Namadhu(my own poem)..more explanation can be expected from newtfmpage Tamil Aringar's like Kupps(Sol Aapayya),Sabesan,Prabhu@patni,C~P etc..

Gaana....is something that out-poured by someone who can't compose a great song, or write a wonderful lyrics.
Gaana is equivalent to Alternative music.
Arent' they?

An interesting thread, after quite a while!
For a composer, there are 2 ways to gain acceptance for his song - produce a classical masterpiece(something really pathbreaking and never tried before) which will earn appreciation from the experts, or simply cater to an existing taste and merely amuse the majority to get their acceptance. This is the easier way out - dont break your head trying to expand frontiers, just throw in the stuff that thrills people.
With music become segmented, composers have to churn out the type of music that appeals to the segment with max purchasing power, undoubtedly the yuppie market. Lifestyles have changed, society has become much more open, youngsters throw a party at the slightest opportunity, so just put on the music, whatever the situation. Thats why the flood of foot-tapping numbers these days.
You cant have thooya thamizh in such songs, so just export words liberally from the local lingo and your 'song' is ready. This is the age of the MacDosa after all. Reach out to a bigger market, thats the name of the game!
I really wonder if Sindhu Bhairavi(songs & story) would be a hit today.
And not that gaana songs are a recent phenomenon, we had enough of them in the 70s too, Surangini, Ahen Vandhirunchu, for instance. Just that, today's songs have a sprinkling of 'peter' in them!

I can't accept Gaana to be an alternate music. Duh ! Please do not compare Music with Gaana. I would say, Gaana is a stream of spontaneous dialogues. And, I can't even accept what they speak as Tamil, 'cause, it was developed & patented in Chennai Tamil.
