TMS, Vani Jayaram are notorious for their negative remarks on IR. Even we hear that KR passed some comments on ARR. I have read the frontline article where Naushad, HPChaurasia, L Vaidyanathan showered praises upon IR. In this thread, can we get to know all of those compliments, jealous and negative comments of various artistes on other various artistes. It will be interesting for those who do not the full content of what was said and when said.

John scott, is the person who conducted IRs symphony no1.
When he was honoured in Madras, he said that he came down to madras to see whether this person is really capable of composing a symphony for RPH.
He watched Raja in action.
He said he was amazed at the speed with which Raja composed a song ,made arrangements , wrote the notes for the instrumentalists and completed the recording( I don't remember which song he composed).
He also praised raja for the speed with which he completed composing the symphony (a record one month's time for composition!!!).

Napolean alias Arunmozhi, is the "AsthAna" flutist for Raja.
When he was offered a song by Deva (for pArthiban),he went to Raja and told he's been given a chance by an MD other than IR.
It seems Raja wished him the best and in a lighter vein, told him ,"if U bcome a full time singer ,then I 'll be in trouble."
For that AM said , "I can never be without ur association, for being a flutist of IR is more than being a famous singer ,for me".
"On hearing this"said he ,"IR was moved to tears".

Once KJ was asked to list the elements of his success and the gurus. He is supoosed to have said this:
Chembai :
From whom I learnt the Carnatic music nuances is my first guru and I worship him.
MSV:
He was the one who inreoduced me to the TFM and I love him like my father.
IR:
Inspite of being younger he is the one who popularized me in the TFM through many songs like "poovae sempoovae", "sindhu bhairavi" etc.. I admire him
They are the principal elements of my success.
Regards
Murali Sankar

In SUN TV program, VM interviewed people with whom he worked. When he was talking with KB, there was a mention of the song "enna satham indha nEram" in which KB appreciated the lines, "mannavanE un vizhiyAl
pen vizhiyai moodu" saying that "kavingar enna shot vakkiradhu enbadhai solli vittAr. I had no choice" endru solli vittu, "AnAlum andha pAttil
enakku mihavum pidithathu Raja-vin music" endRar.
UdanE VM, topic-ai mAthi vittAr.
In a YG Mahendran's program in SUN TV, he shows clips from movies and ask people what is the specialtiy of that scene. One of them is the piece from "Raja pArvai" when Madavi is waiting for her
parents to leave home" so that she can meet Kamal.
People could not say correct answer. Then YGM played the same scene again and pointed out the himalayan difference because of a strong BGM.
This list will go on ...

Similarly, I remember the presentation of Sivaji Ganesan in 1983 or so, in the usual sunday morning programme when great film artistes present their life story. Sivaji when concluding his programme, said (translated): "Food without salt and a programme without the mention of my Arumai Thambi Illaiyaraja is one and the same." And, then he talks about IR music in the movie Vazhkai!
What a feeling I got when it was the greatest actor in the world evoking such heartfelt sentiments for the greatest composer of this world.

emotional compliment:
heard this just yesterday in singapore vaanoli nilayam and also read about this sometime back.
as 'raakamma' from dalapathi was being recorded the initial violins had everyone in the studio foot tapping it seems. as the song slowly reached its climax and finished with that wonderful piece at the end , everyone in the studio got up at the same time to give raaja a standing ovation, well deserved!!!
what more emotional compliments can one give
other than this?!!!

Lot of emotional, positive comments in the thread.Let me cite a negative comment. This was an interview of IR in AIR-Madras, held some 12-13 years ago. The IR-VM combination had reached it's peak in creative partnership and rumours had started floating that there was a rift between them(even Junior Vikatan had a cover story on this topic then). IR was asked about the quality of lyrics in contemporary tamil cinema. IR straight away started deriding the lyrics, saying they were all trash. He cited the lines "methai vAnginen thookkathai vAngala" from the song Poongaatru thirumbumaa.... and asked if anyone could buy sleep in a shop, whether it was a commodity. It sounded a bit odd, because the intention in the line was the lack of peace and use of the words "thookkathai vAngala" was just figurative. I felt that IR was totally biased in those comments.

Sorry for the digression guys.
In a YG Mahendran's program in SUN TV, he shows clips from movies and ask people what is the specialtiy of that scene. One of them is the piece from "Raja pArvai" when Madavi is waiting for her parents to leave home" so that she can meet Kamal.
... Looks like YGM also missed the beauty of tht scene! In that scene, her parents will be leaving and Maadhavi will be anxiously waiting for their departure! Her dad will be climbing up & down in the stair case, but it will appear in slow motion, but in the same frame madhavi will be walking in the normal speed & also there will be wall clock peNdulam swinging in normal speed (if I recollect correctly!). Wht director wanted to depict was, even the small amount of time taken by her parents to depart, appeared like a "yugam" to the heroine! And its shown very well with varying speeds of two different actions in the same frame!
Sorry again for the digression, but I couldnt resist after reading maNNaaru's post..

hi guys, cram here. nice thread going on.
one of the most moving praises that IR got must have been from
hari prasad chaurasia, who fell at his feet and took his blesings
before playing the flute for Nothing but Wind.
that IR and Kamalhasan are members of a mutual admiration society
is well known, and is best demonstrated in the Guna tape.
if imitation is the best form of flattery, IR has enough
flatterers around. most famous among them, excluding deva, are
Anand-Milind and Annu Malik.
when A-M were riding high after the success of QSQT, they said in
an interview that they believe "IR calls the shots down south".
enakku appave sandeham, and my fears came true when these guys
lifted many of IR's latter day songs which became national
superhits.
when priyadarshan wanted annu to score the music for his devar
magan remake virasat, annu was apparently stunned at the IR's
songs and BGM and wondered whether he could match up. the songs
went on to become a big hit, with the inchchi iduppazhagi copy
topping them all.
and btw, IR took just 16 days and not one whole month to compose
his symphony. its another matter that even years later, his fans
are not fortunate enough to listen to it.

Hi everyone,
It was in a TV (I'm not sure which channel) interview, BR when asked about IR, commented like this:
'Avan alavukoluku minjiyavan'.
Just perfect.

about VM "...ovoru thuliyilum un mugam therigiradhu appadeenu oru kurudanukku poi paatu ezhudhiyirukkaan. ivan ellam oru kavignan....."

subbudu the famous music critic, as quoted by srirangam lakshminarayanan in one of his articles.
when asked about 'ennavale' song in kaadhalan
..." kedharathukku sethaaram....'!!!
meaning damage done to the raaga kedharam.

mannAru: Let me clarify: Subbudu commented on Unnikrishnan singing 'Ennavale' and saying that the ragam Kedharam was killed....
IR quoted about Vairamutthu's lyrics, as him writing in the Andhi malai song, where Vairamutthu had written that a blind man(so depicted in the film) could SEE the girls face in every raindrop....
Hope this makes things clear.....

vijay,
I don't think Ilaiyaraaja used the same
words as you have written. But he indeed
showed his outburst against VM (first
time?) in kAraikkudi. Kavignar Kannadasan's
maNi vizha was held there last year and
he tried to compare Kannadasan with
post-kannadasan lyricists. So he said
"padaththin kathAnAyaganO kurudan. Anal
avan pOi 'ovvoru thuliyilum un mugam
therigirathu' -nnu pAduvathu pOl ezhthugirArgal
inraya kavignargal". That's all he said,
never used avan, ivan or such words. I too
think Raja shouldn't have said this in a
public meeting. And ofcourse he surprised
me by saying something against someone
because he never did like this before.
All he will do is his work and doesn't care
whatever others say about him (even if it's bad)
and never say anything bad about othres ,that's
the Raja we know, but this incident is quite
different.May be because of VM's attitude
against Raja and his statements through media
made him to give some feedback i think.
But it's really disappointing.
