It is of course MINSARA KANAVU. BTW, why is MK winning an award in August 1998? Didn't the movie come out a long time ago?

hai muthax.,
THIS IS NagasubramaniaN
THANKS FOR UR COMMENT.
AS U TOLD ., IR NEEDS NO RECOGNITION., BUT I WAS VERY MUCH DISAPPOINTED THIS YEAR WHEN IR DIDN'T GET NATIONAL AWARD FOR BEST MD FOR KM OR GURU OR YATHRAMOZHI. THE SAME THING HAPPENS IN CINEMA EXPRESS AWARDS ALSO., ANYWAY I'LL EXPECT IR'S SCORE FOR 'MARUTHANAYAGAM' & HOPE FOR THE BEST

Jury Special Award:
Actor Vijai(Kaathalukku Mariyathai)
Actor Prashanth(Jeans)
If the awards were for 1996/97, how do you explain that KM got acknowledged anyway?!?!?
Also, Best Music Direction S.A.Raj Kumar for Surya
Vamsam.....I guess they based it on the 'Rosapoo' song which was a HUGE hit.....and perhaps the Kadhala Kadhala song in SV.
Not to mention, Minsara Kanavu was a 1997 film, even though it was very early 1997.....Am I right? As it got so many awards, it feels very old....

Nagasubramanian,
There's no wonder in IR not getting the Best MD award (national award, i mean).
If Minsara kanavu can Bag the best movie award with MogamuL and GURU as contenders, why can't ARR get the best MD award. DOn't u see the hand of AVM
saravanan behind all this "show" called national awards.
I haven't seen any commercial film bagging a national award till Kaadal kOttai and MK got best screenplay and best Director award.
The best thing that happened was , GURU was the OSCAR nominee for the year 1997 and NOT MK or Kaadal kOttai.
If IR didn't bag the national award for best MD for kaalapaani, do u really think the awards r anymore serious????
thamizhla sonna ,athu oru kelikkotha mariduthu.
Nice that Satyajit ray and Bharatan are not alive.
Compare Minsara Kanavu and any movies of satyajit ray or aravindan or adoor gopalakrishnan.
If ray were alive he'd 've committed suicide on seeing this so-so movie getting a national award.
Above all that,do u really think IR needs a national award for proving that he's the best MD ever in Indian Film Industry.
I feel praises from MDs like Naushad and R D Burman is million times more than getting a national award.
I 'm not telling this bcos IR didn't get N award this time. He's bagged it 3 times earlier,u all know.

hi!! is IR being denied of a national award due
to the incompetence of his lobby?? does he have
a lobby?? MK was run to be a hit in tamil, otherwise AVM's image will go down. anyway , it
flopped in hindi market. IR's performance in guru
was any day better than MK. similarly , why did
prabhudeva get best choreographer for MK? what
style was it? an indianised ballet??
about movies going to oscars, it is another
strange story, a mystery.
the talk was also in the same vein when kamalhaasan failed to get the award for his
performance in "raaja paarvai" and sivakumar for
"marupadiyum". who knows what is going on??

opened for pulambal as pulamabal mannan
seems to be desperate. my addition to his
pulambal: will "sandhippoma" bag the best

It is probable that the awards too have become synonymous with mediocrity. Minsara Kanavu definitely has some good pieces of music in the songs "strawberry" and "Vennilavae". In the former the classical piece was brilliant and as everybody can understand, inspired by one of the pieces of IR in "How to name it". In HTNI we have one piece which starts as a lulling tune in the flute (hope it is study for violin as given in the cassette, it is also the background piece in "Veedu"). It traverses through a lot of musical phases before entering into the arena of folk - classical style of IR. The song Vennilavae has definitely some good unconventional bass guitar work but no match for the work of IR in the songs of "GURU". I personally feel that the songs of GURU are far above the normal plane of music and the richness of those songs is profound and deserved recognition. If the commercial guys want to compromise on quality for the sake of bills, we can understand, but not the jury of the awards. It seems that SPB had had no good songs in tamil prior to the "thanga Thamarai " which by all means is one of the crap songs he had sung(personal opinion) and hence it was honored with an award. Note I am not pointing at SPB but at the song. Has SPB not sung "Sangeetha Jaathimullai","Oru Ponmaanai"(by TR), "Raaga Deepam","Vaigaraiyil" and a lot of complicated songs? Hope everybody has heard the song "Judu Judu" (by Hamsalekha in Kannada) for which he was awarded the National Award. It was one of his best. The next year he gets the same for thanga Thamarai . Similarly KJ was anxious of getting the National award for "sindhu Bhairavi" but was told was not considered for the award because "they wanted it to give it to somebody else". Another case is that of Chitra's. She had sung innumerable classical based complex songs (like thathithom) for which she was kept unrecognized. But she was appreciated with the award for "OO Lala la" which by all standards has every element of music absent. Of late the the commerciliazation has gone corrupting even the decisions of the jury. I personally feel that the decisions on awards are well influenced by the Music and film industry giants. Since ARR is the hottest selling name now in the music industry it is highly probable that the industry pressurizes to get the awards in his name only to earn good returns. Any takers for the comments?

Murali Sankar:
Was Chithra's first national award for the "Paadariyen" song from 'Sindu Bhairavi'?
In any case, I think her work in the OO Lala song is truly amazing, her vocal chords soar into unlimited heights!! And I think she's was very well deserving of that award, and that it had nothing to do with the ARR banner. After all she grabbed the same award once again the following year for her Hindi song in 'Virasat.'

Murali,
I agree with U totally.National awards are meaningless to the say the least. Its dictated by silly politics and it should'nt be merited for whatever its worth.
Infact Minsara kanavu was a mediocre album and I was stunned whent they announced a national award for that movie.National awards had some semblance of respect when pure art was recognized till the 80's.The 90's have corrupted even art and they have dragged politics into every conceivable sphere of human activity.

Dear Thomas,
It is true that Chitra got the National Award for the "Paadariyaen Padippariyaen". She has also won it for "Mannja Prasaadhavum" of Malayalam which is a beautiful song in Mohanam. I am not saying that she is unfit for the award but that the song was not worth it. She has absolutely enviable voice and I am an ardent fan of her. That the song did not deserve this kind of respect was my opinion. As you can see the formulation of the tune itself is not pleasing and nothing was innovative or pleasant about it. If an ardent ARR fan tries to say that it is a new blend of folk and western, sorry I am not of the same opinion. Finest of these works are present in the compositions of IR and not ARR. On eg is the one I had talked about in the previous response. For eg just see the power of the tune "Inji Iduppazhaga". I am not very sure but have heard that Janaki had won the National award for that song. The remake (Anu Malik infact has tampered to a great extent the original melody of the song by not adopting the Violin interludes of IR) of that song in "Viraasat" has given chitra another. It shows the power of composition.

Murali Sankar,
I totally disagree, I think the OooLala song was extremely innovative. And as far as Chithra's deserving of the award, I invite you to revisit the song as listen to the part where Chithra comes in.
And I don't think S.Janaki has won a national award for the "Inji Iduppazhaga" song. Personally I think she sounded very, very old in that song. I mean unflatteringly oldish vocals.
But anyway, we all have our opinions right? as biased as they maybe.
