For a good understanding of how to approach this ongoing symposium, please refer to the thread, "Kannadhaasan Vs. Vairamuthu TFM Symposium Topic 1:Iyarkai Varnanai" before you post. Let me reiterate that this is not a patti mandram, but
a research symposium.
Please show TFM examples of both poets with regards to just theirVaarththai Prayoagam for this thread. By vaarththai prayoagam, we mean captivating use of language, word play, different use of a known word, vocabulary, etc. Please provide the name of the song whose lines you excerpt and the name of the movie if known.

As always, your introduction to the "oor" pAdal was absolutely hilarious--especially the "sambandhar/some under berth"!
BTW, I'm not "Observer" either, but I am an America On Line user and have noticed I get "spider" once in a while too; so, please don't use that as a "clue".

Bones has mentioned quite a few of my favorites. Some more kaNNadhAsan's full-length classics with wordplay are:
1. pArththEn siriththEn--veera abhimnanyu
2. aththikkAi kAi kAi--balE pANdiyA
Since we've discussed these songs several times in DF, I'm skipping the details.

I have a feeling VM is going to be outclassed in this category, but here goes...
Of all present-day ideas, VM seems to be the only one who writes songs as much for expressing ideas as for expressing his linguistic skills. The following technique may now be considered over-used, but when it first came out,
kaNNukku mai azhagu
kavidhaikku poi azhagu
avaraikkup pOO azhagu

Actually Vaali is the one who had mastered the play of words. Almost all MGR songs are good because of the intelligent choice of words. When it comes to 'Vaarthaip prayogam' we should include vaali also. Otherwise it would be like asking 'Who is the best fielder 'Tendulkar or Srinath' when Jadeja looks on.

Ranga, since VM and Kannadhaasan shared the Kaviyarasu title until recently and Kungumam began the speculation after Shivaji said VM is better than Kannadhaasan, we are only comparing these two poets. There are plenty of others besides Vaali who also merit attention but this is a specific comparative study between two poets--Kannadhaasan and VM, so Vaali needs to be left out of this symposium. Thanks.

VM's lyrics are known for their arresting imagery. Also, since he hails
from the "Pudhukavithai" school of poetry, his choice of words is
always unique and economical. What VM brought to TFM, what he specializes in, is
surrealistic imagery and juxtaposing irony (muran?) on unlikely things
and situations.
From "Vaanamae Ellai" the following line in the song "Nadodi Mannargalae" is a
wonderful example of his surrealism:
nilavaip pidiththu
tharaiyil siraivaiththaalum
velichchum kodukkum
In the song,"Thannithotti" from "Sindhu Bhairavi",to describe the fall
from grace of a great artist, VM uses this simple analogy to profound effect:
indha sooriyan vazhukki
saeththil vizhundhadhu saami
in this line from the song "Manithaa Manithaa" (movie?), VM shows the
strength of a revolutionary movement, its proliferation in this
amazing surrealistic image:
asaiyum kodigal
uyarum uyarum
nilavin mudhugai
urasum
The following examples are for his expert use of irony. From the movie
"Udhayageetham", in the song "udhayageetham paaduvaen", appear the following
lines:
ulagam ellam marandhu
poagum
maranam kooda irandhu
poagum
in "poomaalai vaangi" from "Sindhu Bhairavi" VM uses another
effective muran:
maanaththin maanaththai
vaangivittaan
The following are examples of exquisite descriptions and imagery:
From "pani vizhum malar vanam", though IR kicks-butt with his great interludes,
if you just look at the sandham of this song, it is very simple without
much range for long sentences, but what VM came up for lyrics belong in a book
of poetry not a movie song:
panivizhum malarvanam un paarvai oru varam
inivarum munivarum thadumaarum kanimaram
. . .
saelai moodum ilanjoalai maalai soodum malarmaalai
irubadhu nilavugal nagamengum olividum
ilamaiyin kanavugal vizhiyoaram thulirvidum
kaigal idaigalil neligaiyil idaiveli kuraigaiyil
eriyum vilakkuch chiriththu kangal moodum
. . .
kaaman koayil siraivaasam kaalai ezhundhaal parigaasam
thazhuvidum pozhudhilae idam maarum idhayamae
viyarvaiyin mazhaiyilae payiraagum paruvamae
aadum ilaigalil vazhigira nilavoli iruvizhi
mazhaiyil nanaindhu magizhum vaanambaadi
in this song,"Neethanae endhan" from the same movie, VM
stands his own with the best Romantic poets in any language.
Especially the last three lines come pouring so fast that the
synchronizing of the words is so perfect, it sounds like a
prayer song:
panneeril ilandhaegam neeraadum
panippookkal unaikkandu thaenoorum
nee aadai anigalan soodum araigalil roajaa maalligai vaasam
muga vaervaith thuliyadhu poagum varaiyilum thenral kavarigal veesum
nenjoaram thallaadum muththaaram ennaalum
. . .
eera iravil nooru kanavu
paedhai vizhiyil boadhai ninaivu
un aasai midhakkinra paalaadai
un kaalai kulippaattum neeroadai
veyil naalum sudumena dhaegam kedumena jannal thiraiyidum maegam
iru kaadhal vizhigalil paesum mozhigalil piraiyum pournami aagum
sandhoasham unnoadu kaiveesum ennaalum
- From: Udhaya (@ 205.218.142.217)
on: Fri Jul 24 18:42:18 EDT 1998
Lyrics correction in the second-last line of the song "Needhanae":
iru kaadhal vizhigalil paesum mozhigalil piraiyum pournami aagum
should be
iru kaadhal vizhigalil veesum oligalil
piraiyum pournami aagum
