Yesterday it was a pleasant surprise to watch Sridevi in a new Hindi serial "Maalini Iyer" in Sahara TV. She acts as an Iyer girl married to a Norh Indian; speaking Tamil, Hindi and a bit Telugu. Its humourous, believe me. Today her song in SOTD :-)
As Saravanan mentioned, Sridevi acted as Korangaatti :-) If I am correct, Ambica also acted as Korangaatti in another film called "kaalamadi kaalam". Same IR was MD :-)
SOTD and Pandhayathula (superb rendering by VJ in the lines "rama ada rama" ) are for Sridevi. Whereas Thenna marathula is for Nisha (Sridevi's sister) and Sridhar (Namma kuzhandaigal fame and ever green Naradhar).
Thenna marathula was the first duet sung by IR. When IR was moving up the ladder, he conducted a light music programme for Ganesh Chathurthi near Luz Vinayakar Temple. PS and SJ participated. IR chose to sing Thenna marathula along with PS. The prog was after 10pm, still in my memory :-)
Good songs were given to BSS, but somehow she did not srike it hard to get an unique place in TFM :-(

This song is one of my all time favourites. I dont know why, but whenever I listen to this song, I feel my childhood. That also my KG times. Weldone by IR, Sasirekha and Alangudi Somu.

bb, I recommend the song "Ninaipadhu niraiverum nee irundhaal porum" as SOTD someday. It was composed and sung by a few films wonder M.L.Srikanth. This song was a hit during mid 70's and SJ also has paired with MLSrik to make this a great melody.

Mythila, Ninaipadhu niraiverum is by VJ + ML Srikanth. Excellent song. Superb humming by VJ after 1st Charanam. I think it was a Vijayakumar + Rajmallika (Meena's mother) starrer movie.

bb,
In your list of singers featured in SOTD, Nithyasree, SN Surender, AP Komala, Soolamangalam Rajalaksmi & Jayalakshmi are not there. I guess songs of SN Surender and Nithyasree have featured earlier.
A request: Can you try "veLLai kamalathile avaL veetrippaL" by Soolamangalam Rajalaksmi from Gowri Kalyanam? A great song by Mahakavi.

BB,
I would love to hear it, though I can't remember the tune of the song. I am sure I could recollect it once I hear it. Can you upload it somewhere, pal ? I am also trying to compile a collection of songs with English lyrics in Tamil films for broadcasting at WRPI. This one must fit in that category. Any pointers of other such songs with English lyrics and any website I could download them from ?
Sirkazhi, I believe was a die-hard Tamilian, when it came to singing :) I am just kidding. It seems to me that it was the common style of singing at that time to pronounce 'sa' as 'sha' (Kandasalaa and ML Vasanthakumari’s songs are typical examples of it; of course, everyone else sang so too, in different degrees). If you listen to yesterday’s song by Sirkazhi, you can almost hear him stammering with the ‘sa’ in samaraSAm. He makes it ‘sa’ and ‘sha’ in the different lines and when he makes it ‘sha’ it sounds a little comical (I am meaning it only with a good humor; he is too great a singer to be ridiculed). The ‘sha’ sound in the song, as it seems to me, he was only trying to force to keep to the trend of the time (unlike Kandasaala and MLV to whom it came natural). And much more glaring is his English accent. In the ‘Beautiful…’ song, I remember I have always had a good laugh when he says ‘nAn pirandhirukka vEndiyathu inglAnd’. The Music Director of that song must have had a cruel sense of humor or must have had a bizarre taste !

VizhigaL NakshathirangaLai varudinalum
viralgaL ennavo jannal kambigaLoduthan
Mu.Metha's puthukavithai of the 70s was an instant hit. I thought this one best described the longing of a woman awaiting her rajakumaran. Alangudi Somu has done one better. In school days "thennamarathula" was more popular. But listening to this now, I am able to visualize the pain of a spinster.
Every second song in movies is a duet and the third , a man singing about the woman of his love
“Kula magaLai kidaipathorko koduthuvaika vendum”,ënniRandu pathinaru vayathu etc.. But Tamil films have rarely shown a woman describing her waiting save for long shots like “chithiraikku mele selai katta asai”. This song is that way pretty unique and BSS has poured out after all the song must have come from her heart…must have been in her 20s when she sung this. For her indruvarai Antha meLam kottaveyillai. The thought about APK , LRE, JamunaRani and Lata herself flashed across my mind .How many times these woman would have sung about a joys of married life, lullabies…… it pains. Yarukagova, theriyatha, theinthukoLLa vaipe illatha, unarvugaLaga irunthum, manam negizha padiya ungaLukku vaNakkam.
I had casually mentioned about this when “Unathey ilam malai pozhuthu “was featured as SOTD. BS ‘s voice ,IR’s music and Somu’s lyrics………. I regret for my words and feel terribly guilty. Ennayum thoLil thooki en maganyum thoLil thooki maaratha santhoshathudan uchimorntha DharmambaL akkavum, engaL veetu kalyanangaL anaithirukkum samayal seyya varum Suganthavum intha paatai ketka vendam.

OISG -
Here's the source of Mu. Metha's "derived" eloquence:
"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."
Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere's Fan (1891), Act III.
-----
While the "spinsterhood" sympathies in your post are laudable (and a wee bit indulgent,) one can't overlook the hackneyed and flogged history of "wo/men in waiting" cliches in Indian cinema. Yes, even the audience can demonstrate enduring patience.
The transition from artifice (pining character broken into song) to artiste (single professional woman going strong) is an example of individual (male) sentiment overriding personal (female) agency.
The regret, it would seem, is all yours.

After "Sendhoorapoovae" became a sensation, IR had to deliver a female solo in many movies following 16 Vayadhinilae, especially Sri Devi starrers. This was one of the reasons SJ was hard to get rid off. Today's SOTD was a refreshing change of pace.
Da Vinci,
Can you tell me the upside of this endeavor?
"I am also trying to compile a collection of songs with English lyrics in Tamil films for broadcasting at WRPI."
Of all the marvelous songs Sirgaazhi has sung, must you ferret out "Beautiful, Marvelous"?
If English lyrics in TFM were an occasional thing, I can see the trivial curiosity, but when they're all over the place, highlighting them hardly seems warranted.

Udhaya,
I have no ill intentions.
It is just that I am trying to compile a collection of songs that had English words as lyrics. I had been doing such similar collections and broadcasting them at a local radio station here (like songs having 'laughter' as theme, songs that were rare as the Karumbu song and Latha Mangeshkar's first tamil song, etc). I dont mean to make fun of Sirkazhi's English accent though it does create a harmless sense of mirth when one listens to it (I am sure you would agree to it when he says 'very very excellent' in that song:) ). No harm meant, Pal.
BB,
Thank You.

rajaG,
I wrote this as part of a mail to a friend just last evening:
'Beautiful--marvelous'(SG-LRE) is from Sashti Films' Manam Oru Kurangu- 1967. It was a great adaptation of the classic My fair Lady, which itself was adapted from Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. Music by D.B.Ramachandran.
DBR (1928- 1986) was a great, but unassuming genius. He was G.Ramanathan's assistant till GR's untimely death. He was said to be the brilliant mainstay of GR's orchestra. Later he assisted the great S.Balachandar--in fact the bgm of SB's thriller Bommai- 1964 was entirely by DBR.
DBR also had a great voice- I have been spellbound each time I listened to the lovely duet 'Naan yen varavendum' (Poonkothai- 1953), sung by DBR & Jikki.
Unfortunately DBR was not pushy, nor did he know the cunning ways of the filmworld. He did compose music for a few films independently--Karpooram- 1967, Manam Oru Kurangu- 1967 & Magizhampoo- 1969.
DBR has composed several devotional albums, mostly with seergazhi Govindarajan. You must have definitely heard his 'Vinayagane vinai theerpavane' and ' Nee allal deivam illai'
Coming to the film MOK, it was a great comedy, produced by VT Arasu, scripted by Cho, and starred besides Cho,- Muthuraman & KR Vijaya. TMS's Manam Oru Kurangu title song is a wonderful number.
