Could the "wood" used be a main point of difference between the two branches of singing? :-)

I don't believe Raghu did a R&D to come up with this data. I think this is hacked from some music company web site (possibly HMV) which produces albums (Look at those Marriage songs, Thalaatu songs).

Ghazal is a "sub-genre" of the Hindustani tradition. There is no comparative equivalent (in formalistic terms) in the traditional Carnatic school. That's why this topic is such a non-starter.

Excepting the fact that Ghazal singers sing ghazals and Carnatic music singer sing carnatic classical songs, there is no major difference, they are all the same.

on a lighter note:
had raghu added IR under one heading and ARR on another then today morning(IST), now, i had to click on atleast two "Old responses" link on this thread. So the moral behind this "lighter note" is that this topic is not related to TFM at all ;-))
Btw Raghu "Bhimsen Joshi" u mean Pandit Bhimsen Joshi (one who sings in milae sur maera thumhaaraa)? if so, afaik, he is a pucca Hindustani singer not a Ghazal singer. Please correct me if it wrong.

Raguvaran:
AFAIK ashwini bhide, bhimsen joshi, jasraj, kishori amonkar............ are all pure hindustani classical singers and have made NO significant contribution to ghazal singing. Moreover ghazal is a light classical form, derived from Hindustani classical music. One cannot make such a comparison between ghazal singers and carnatic singers at all.
AFAIK there is no equivalent to the ghazal form in Southern music. Is there an equivalent for tappa or kajri? I dont know.

I thought ghazzal evolved from hindustani, do correct me, If I am wrong.

raghu - yes it did evolve from Hindustani, but its still a lighter form. It cannot be compared to Carnatic.
Hindustani vs Carnatic would have been a better theme - but i think its useless comparing two beautiful genres. Its better to enjoy both of them separately, instead of comparing.
I personally enjoy Carnatic immensely. I am a fan of M S Subbalaxmi and M L Vasanathakumari.

LET US CLOSE THIS DISCUSSION

We have a possible 71 X 95 combinations.Have a field day folks!
Raghu,
to make the matter more attractive try a third dimension.Add the film singers Tamil & Hindi. We will have very interesting topics like ..
1.What is the difference between Ariyakudi,Kishori Amonkar and Theni Kunjaramma
2.Alka yagnik,Sanjay subramaniam and Nagoor EM Haneefa
- From: O_IS_G (@ 193.188.97.152)

some more clarifications required before i get on with this monumental task:
Should i take Alathur Brothers as one or individually compare them with the other group.
If i find the same name in two different gharnas suggest the course of action.

Raghu,
Big mistake. You missed one name which belongs in both Ghazal list and Carnatic list. It is Vani Jayaram.
