Hello, I just saw Jeans in Los Angeles, and I
believe it was dubbed from Tamil to Hindi (I only
speak English). There was a beautiful love song,
which I think is the love theme (very slow), and
sung partially in English. I've been unable to find the name of this song, and I don't believe it
is included as one of the 6 songs (by
AR Rahman) on the cd album.
If anyone knows which song I'm talking about,
I'm trying to find out the name, who the composer
is, who sings it, and on what album I can find it.
Thank you very much in advance.
Sincerely,
Brett
p.s. Are there 2 different soundtrack albums (in
Tamil & Hindi)? I'm sorry if these are ignorant
questions, I am American and am not very familiar
with Indian cinema. Even though I didn't understand the dialogue, I very much enjoyed Jeans.

Brett:
Nice to know that you enjoyed watching 'Jeans';
I did, too. What do you think of the songs in
the album? Please give your frank opinions. The
participants of this forum would be very interested
in knowing how non-Indians view the albums coming
out of Indian Cinema. Apart from 'Jeans', have
you listened to (and enjoyed?) any other Tamil albums?
I recently saw 'Jeans'. I too distinctly recall the
song that you are referring to. It has a haunting
tune, sung by a female voice. (I don't know who that is.)
The song has about 5 lines (all in English) and,
after that, the same tune is repeated in humming.
The humming goes as ni sa ree saa, ni sa ree saa, ... etc.
The song is fully repeated in the background music 3
times... once towards the end of the beginning
titles (when the night skyline of NewYork(?) is
shown), then in the airport scene when the customs
officer asks Ais to open her handbag and finds
many of Prashanth's things, and, for the third time
at the end titles. Apart from that, bits of the
song's humming are repeated sooo many times in
various parts of the movie. Anyone who has seen this
movie will come back with this tune in the lips;
it is so catchy!
I have a friend who has bought a VCD of the
movie. I can borrow it over the weekend and look
at the titles to see if there is any mention
of this song.
There was a discussion of 'Jeans' -- its songs and
the movie, in another thread. There, one of the
forumers named Sankaran mentioned about a 'madhuvanti
raagaa bit' being repeated sooo many times in the
movie. I don't know if he was referring to this
song that we are talking about. You may send him
an e-mail to find out. To see Sankaran's posting,

I just bought the soundtrack album for Jeans and I think it's very, very good. In my opinion, A.R. Rahman is a great composer. He melds the Indian film music seemlessly with other Western style influences (synthesizers, hip-hop drum beats etc).
All the songs are very strong and I think some could be hits on certain American radio shows (Ajooba is one).
Although I enjoy listening to Indian classical music (Ustad Ali Akbar Khan etc) I have not listened to a lot of Indian film music, and this is probably the first listen to specifically Tamil film music.
By the way, the cd selling in Los Angeles is put out by Sound & Vision (Dubai, UAE)
with copyright notices from DM International (London?). I hope this is the authentic
version. It contains the following songs:
1) Columbus (Sonu Nigam)
2) Hai Rabba (Udit Narayan, Kavita Krishnamurthy)
3) Tauba Tauba (Hariharan, Anuradha)
4) Kehta Hai Mera Dil (Kavita Krishnamurthy)
5)) Ajooba (Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam)
6) Kehne Ko Dadi (Sonu Nigam, Kavitha Poudwal, Sukvinder Singh, Sangeetha)
7) Hai Rabba ((Udit Narayan, Kavita Krishnamurthy)
Instrumentals:
8) Akela Hai
9) Mere Dil Ka Wo
10) Suniye To
Recorded and mixed at Panchathan Record-Inn Studios, Chennai by S. Siva Kumar and
H. Sridhar.
I will post my impressions of the music on the forum as you suggest. Again, thanks for
your help. What city are you writing from?

Hi Brett,
Thrilled to know about your interest in Indian Fil m Music.Jeans songs are a big hit and ARR is a very promising and relatively new MD in TFM. BTW, have you listened to the instrumental fusion album "How to Name it?" and "Nothing But Wind" by Maestro Ilayaraaja, a great composer of India. He was invited by Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to compose a Symphony for them 3 years back(not released for public yet:-(. Probably we will suggest some of his great film songs later.
Myself and Sathiya(as I guess) are currently in Singapore.
WARM WELCOME TO our TFM Forum!
Cheers!

Hi Bret,
Welcome to TFM,
if you want to hear more of A.R.Rahaman's music and other composers - please visit my site.
Please give your comments on the music scores.
You should hear to Illayaraja's composition - his chord progressions are best in the world.

HI BRETT!!
A big warm WELCOME to our TFM's DF !!
it is heartening to find someone like you appreciating Indian music -
A.R.Rehman is definitely a talented composer - but he is only a miniscule of the total talent we have from our land.
Maestro.Illayaraja, the most prolific and the most accomplished music composer from India and one of the best composers in the world, is unfortunate not to have been given the recognition due to him - if you are really looking for some outstanding music from an Indian composer, listen to Ilayaraaja's "HOW TO NAME IT ?" , "NOTHING BUT WIND " and "INDIA - 24 HOURS" - three incredible albums .
Also visit Mr.Srikanth's website, if possible -
We, in India revere Maestro Illayaraaja on the same lines as the world reveres a Salvador Dali,
John Milton or a Picasso.
Once again, WELCOME to our DISCUSSION FORUM - wish you a happy musical surfing !!!

Uh,a voice of dissent methinks is sorely needed here...
Reading the above effusively worded welcomes I must say I'm rather embarrassed, by the fawninig attitudes towards the first outsider to evince the slightest interest in Indian film music,to say nothing of the unabashed (and totally off-topic) axe-grinding of the Raja-cultists who brandish those above-mentioned feeble Western Classical pastiches at the slightest pretext.
As for the "We,in India..." the tone there is insufferably pompous and the casual assumption of the role of spokesperson for the entire country is plain ridiculous.
To answer Brett's question, the song-fragment you speak of is very likely a Rahman composition and no I dont think we'll ever see it on CD.Rahman typically composes some seriously appealing bits and pieces for some of his movies that he then liberally sprinkles on the soundtrack which only make an appearance on CD(or cassette as the case may be) if the movie is very succesful.
To illustrate Rahman's background score for the film Bombay featured two songs(Ruk Ja and ?) that were not available on the first batch of cassettes but were made available on cassette after the spectacular country-wide success of the movie.
Something similar happened with Thiruda Thiruda too although that movie was not as succesful.
Other such half-songs that I'd like to see on CD/cassette but I'm sure I never will are-
1.A brief "title-song" for the movie May-Madham that is totally infectious.
2.An incredible pathos-laden rustic vocal rendered by Rahman himself over the opening credits of the movie Indira.
There are some others but since this post is now getting rather unreadably long I'll desist.

Er..
A little correction there, please read "succesful"
as "successful".I keep slipping there I dont know why.

This is an intriguing thread. Let me play the devil's advocate here. How do we know that Brett is indeed a non-Tamil speaker or non-Indian for that matter? My concern is, many passionate contributers here could be taken for a ride by one of us who wants to stir things up. I say this based on Brett's use of language.
If I'm wrong, then, of course welcome "Brett" and continue your contributions, no slights intended, just sick of too many secessionist tirades in this forum.

Thanks everyone for such an enthusiastic welcome. I just bought A.R. Rahman's Sony release entitled "Vande Mataram," and I must admit that it has changed my opinion of him tremendously. Just a few days ago, after listening to the "Jeans" soundtrack, I said that I thought Mr. Rahman is a great composer. After listening to "Vande Mataram," I now consider him a musical genius. A true addition to not only India/Asia, but the whole world's socio-cultural legacy.
My only regret is that Sony did not do a good enough job promoting this record around the world. I know in America, I saw no advertisements, did not hear it on any radio shows, nor was the video played on t.v. I found out about the album because of my exposure to "Jeans." If Sony promoted this album with force, it has the potential to be a blockbuster seller even here in the U.S.
Thanks again for all of your suggestions and advice, and I am looking forward to enjoying my new found love and appreciation on Indian music.
Sincerely
Brett
p.s. I live in Los Angeles

Udhaya:
You started a suspicious comment about Brett and
now someone else has picked it up to do some
bashing. This thread is turning out to be another
one of those IR vs ARR fights. :-(
Who knows, Brett could really be an American named
Brett Maguire who has interest in albums
of 'Midnight Oil'. What do you say, Brett?
