From the "KB-in Pada PaadalGaL" izhai-yilirundhu:-
SindhuBhairavi:
Nothing would have brought the intense desire for Suhasini
and the resulting agony of ShivaKumar more effectively than the song
"Thom Thom Na".
The Backdrop of Roaring waves against the
invincible rocks symbollically paint the force of his desire for
Suhasini battling against his sacred marriage to Sulakshna.
The words of the song drive home the inner turmoil of Shivakumar.
"Asai Ennum Puyal veesi Vittathadi.
ANi vER varai Adi Vittathadi"
What else can describe the total submission of Shivakumar better?
Yet he does not want to go without a fight, but since his inner self is devoid of the strength to quell his abominal desires, he turns to God..
"Moham ennum Indha Theeyai KonDru
Poda VenDum..
Illai endra podhu endhan moochchu
nindru pOga vEndum... kAppAi Devi"

Song: Manamae Mayangaathae; Film: Kanmaniyae Paesu
In this movie, this song comes at a dramatic turn of events. After his wife becomes mentally disabled learning of her sister's widowhood, the husband marries his widowed sister-in-law assuming that his first wife's mental state is hopeless. Their married life proves a success until the mentally disabled sister returns home after being cured. The husband and the remarried sister and everyone around the household must revert to the old ways to prevent another mental breakdown. The sister is about to arrive home from the hospital, the younger sister is forced to wear her widow's attire, at this juncture the asariri (omnition) song begins. The lyrics are profound, melancholic, and poignant. A timeless gem from IR, KJY, and VM.

Song: Sonnadhu Nee Thaana; Film: Nenjil Oar Aalayam
A dying husband requests his wife to marry someone else. The wounded wife sings the following song filled with remorse, love, gratitude and a million other emotions in crosscurrents. Phew, I'm moved just thinking about the scene and the song. One of many Kannadhaasan classics that merit a standing ovation. I can't imagine better lyrics for this situation.

Vairamuththu
There's a tiny story behind thom thom nA from Sindhu Bhairavi. KB had initially mentioned that he'd like to see Bharadhi's mOhaththaik konRu vidu allAl endhan moochchai niRuththi vidu to be included in the song. But, given the preset music by IR, VM came back with
mOham ennum mAyap pEyai nAnum
kOnRu pOda vENdum
illaiyenRa pOdhu endhan moochchu
ninRu pOga vENdum
which gave KB the "Bharadhi bAdhippu" he was looking for without compromising that intense piece of music live with conflicting emotions.
Other equally situationally appropriate songs from KB's Sindhu Bhairavi:
Situation: He is an acclaimed carnatic music vidhwan. He sings in a non-native language and scales the heights of AlApanai. The entire auditorium bursts into applause except one woman who tells him to stop. She argues that art should not be just a distant jewel in an elitist crown, but also be salt on every common man's plate. He challenges her to sing such a song then. And, she sings......to change his professional and personal life forever.
Song: pAdaRiyEn padippaRiyEn.

Situation: She locates the Mother who abandoned her as a baby since she is illegitimate. Now that Mother is a respectable wife and mother (to others). Her heart feels full and overflows as tears. She is singing about that relationship which exists only to her.

Situation: She shows him a new dimension in music. Musical companionship and a good friendship change course and become a full-fledged extra-marital affair. She leaves him and disappears, and he lets go of his precious music. She lets him know she'll be back when he gets straightened out and starts singing again. He sings out his agony of waiting for her and how she's an integral part of her life [and basically constructs an argument for bigamy! The usual KB touch.]

In the movie "Bagyalaksmi", Sowkar Janaki marries Gemini Ganesan in her childhood and is later told that GG has died in a shipwreck.( She is seen in a white saree throughout the movie). Her friend, the heroine of the movie falls in love with GG (who is not recognised by SJ) and SJ ends up , due to some twists and turns in the story, working at GG's house. The song "Kaanavantha " is sung by the heroine when she is with GG after marriage. In the meantime , SJ comes to know that GG was the person she was married to and comes rushing to meet him. This song is being sung at the same time and carries a message for the newly wed couple as well as SJ.
"Kaanavantha Kaatchi enna vellinilave,
kandu vitta kolam enna velli nilave"
KD refers to SJ as velli nilave (she is in a white saree) and the above lines suit the lovers as well.
The concluding portion of the song really creates the story of movie from then on.
"Megathirkul marainthu vidu vellinilave"
The heroine expresses her desire to be left alone with her husband and the message for SJ is to not to interfere with her friend's life.
A truly classy creation by KD.
Udhaya..and interesting anecdote connected with "Sonnathu Neethana" is that the opening lines of the song were actually directed at MSV after KD was told that MSV had spoken about KD's "habits" disparagingly in KD's absence.

Hi,
I'd like to add one more song from "Bhagyalakshmi" that is
Malai pozhuthin mayakkathile nan kanavu
kanden thozhi.
This song depicts a tru melancholy.
As the situation is already given by sriram lakshman,
I'd like to add these lines for the situation.
Kanavil vanthavar yarena ketten, kanavar enrar
thozhi.
kanavar enral avar kanavu mudintha pin pirinthathu en thozhi.
an excellent lyrics by KD.

Sriram & Radha:
kANa vandha is one of my kaNNadhAsan favorites too. Each and every line of that song is an unintentional, indirect message to the widowed friend. Here is a cut and paste of what I wrote on it in another thread and the full lyrics:
Situation: The hero and the heroine have a child marriage and do not remember it. The hero falls in love with his college-mate who is the heroine's friend; the heroine is unaware of this and thinks they are just platonic friends. The hero & the second heroine go up to the terrace on a romantic full moon night (movies manage to have these full moons when necessary). Meanwhile the heroine discovers that her friend's male friend is her own husband, and runs upstairs to break the news, but stops dead on her tracks when she hears the second heroine singing this song to the hero.
kaaNa vandha kaatchi enna veLLi nilavae
kaNdu vitta koalam enna veLLi nilavae
oadi vandha vaegam enna veLLi nilavae
nee oaridathil nirpadhenna veLLi nilavae
ninaithu ninaithu solla vandha saedhigaL enna
than ninaivu maari nindru vitta vaedhanai enna
ingu viLayaadum kaadhalarai kaaNa vandhaayoa
unnai ariyaamal paarthapadi thigaithu nindraayoa
kaadhalendhan sondham endru ariyavillaiaa
kanni uLLam unakkirundhum naaNamillayaa
un moaga nilai marandhu vidu veLLi nilaavae
vandha maegathilae maraindhu vidu veLLi nilaavae
In one sense, this is an ordinary lovesong sung playfully by the second heroine to the moon. At another level, it's a cruel song which tells the
heroine she is an outsider who needs to forget her dreams and stay away. kaNNadhAsan excels!
Back later with more kaNNadhAsan and vairamuththu...
