I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Naaz, I haven't heard the other song that you mentioned. Neel's site doesn't seem to have it. If he doesn't have it, I don't know where to look for this song.
reg. Anu Malik's comment, I read it as a "modest condescension" and acceptance that his songs do not require the "excessive" training of VJ to render them. a novice would suffice to bring out the class (or lack of it) in his songs, he accepts. Anu Malik's modesty should be praised:-)
ps: me reverting back to my name instead of the eternally confusing s0 (or is it sO, SO, So, so???)

I interviewed a well-known bharatanatyam dancer for an article on "Dancing for the Screen" (Chitra Visweswaran) where she said that the "dances" in Shankarabharanam were "pan-filmi" (including the costumes) and there were borrowing from many classical traditions (including kuchipudi, particularly the Ragam Thanam Pallavi song shot in Konarak, and the jatiswaram at the beach where MB shows up during the music lesson) but none of them were "authentic" (or reflective of natya shashtra) - just choreographed with ad-hoc movements for the purposes of the film. As a more "faithful" (not full still) rendition she mentioned the dances by Sandhya for Shantaram's films, and the films of Shyam Benegal (Mandi) and Satyajit Ray (Shatranj Ke Khilari) as being traditionally sincere.
My post was not to disqualify MB's classical credentials (she is a fine exponent of her training,) but to point out how "film" adaptations of classical traditions (especially in "dance/music" based films) are essentially "corrupted" by "popular" impulses.

I promise to give you my take on AM's statement (which is close to your interpretation)but now I have
do some instant scanning for this piece that is due...
The VJ song was added to the "Files" section in the egroup (I think.) I believe it must still be available as a file.
(Neel D, if you are reading this at all - please include "Ulagengum" at the website! :-))

Ragam Thalam Pallavi from TT is not available at the website. I thought you were referring to the "Ulagengum" song. Sorry for this confusion. Gotta run.

Saravanan, Naaz,
In TR Ramanna's 'Baghdad pErazhagi', starring Ravichandran & JJ, there was a 'filmi' qawali which went :
Ravichandran questions: 'akkaaLai oruvanum appaavai oruththiyum manandhadheppadi?'
JJ & company are dumbfounded! The hero replies: 'ak 'kaaLai' oruvanum ap 'paavai' oruththiyum maNappadhenbadhu ulaga vazhakkamthanE?!' I am not able to recall the beginning lines of the song!

Point taken. "My post was not to disqualify MB's classical credentials" - this is exactly where I was confused. Sorry, I need to be more careful in reading between lines.

The flat page can lead to many misreadings, and we are all prone to these "disconnects" in this forum from time to time. But, by now you should know that I try to be unambiguous and direct as much as possible. If you had read the follow on line a bit slowly (and not "between") the thrust of my comment would have become
abundantly clear:
" The sequences in AAA, HKSKN, Zamane Ko Dhikhana Hai and other such are corruptions, but in the popular (filmi) understanding of this tradition they are deemed qu'wwali. "
I was only drawing a parallel between the classical arts and their filmi adaptations, and not the artistes in the sequence/film.
Manju Bhargavi is a tremendously gifted danseuse. One of my all time favorite VJ songs is picturised with her graceful steps: "Sangeetham En Deghamandro" from Bala Nagamma. I also found her to be memorable (although she just appeared in one song sequence) in Sagara Sangamam with the lovely SJ solo: Balakanaka...
I appreciate your honesty. And it is better to clarify than to misunderstand - so please do it without hesitation.

Cinema Virumbi,
Shall I respond? The songs starts with "nawab-ukk-oru keLvi...nee summa sollaiyaa... savaal vittu saalam pottu poga vandhaaraa?". Superb Qwali song by GK Venkatesh sung by SPBalu and Janaki. I think 'Baghdad pErazhagi' was JJ's 99th film (Thirumangalyam was her 100th movie).
In this film, Shubha (Pattikaada pattaNama fame), Savithri (in a very insignificant role), Major also acted. A grand movie indeed.

That one song in Sagarasangamam is indeed memorable. The whole scene - people enjoying this dance program and at the same time cooks trying to finish up cooking the meal for the guests, while Kamal dances in that kitchen and Jayaprada (stunningly beautiful in that movie, by the way) and Janaki watch him do that - is just wonderful to watch. A good combination of events in that scene!

I mentioned that the Ulagengum song was in the egroup files...But I was mistaken! It is available on the website. Add this one without a second thought to that "excessive" list :-) The opening of this song, and VJs voice throughout, is simply unbelievable. Give it a listen (in the solo section - paththinip penn) if you haven't already. It will also show you the path TFM has taken in a dozen years.

Jaya Prada has never looked as fetching as she did in Sagara Sangamam/Salangai Oli. Never before, never since. And who can forget the amazing Mounamana Neram? Just shut up and listen - is the best response :-)

I remember the Baghdad Perazhagi poster with JJ all made up - kireedam and kannmai galore. I've always wondered why natural beauties like JJ, Jaya Prada, Kanchana, Vanisri - right up to Aishwarya Rai...all felt/feel the urge to don such war-paint for the camera? Their unadorned, sharp-featured faces were enough to launch a zillion wet dreams!

For all JP fans i suggest Buchi Babu an ANR/Dasari movie .Stunning, would be an understatment. In my early teens ,the whole world started looking beautiful once I came out of the theatre in Eluru,AP.Watched "Antha maina anubhavam" -5 times there and "Ninaithale inikkum"- well...lost count!
When I actually met her in early 1993 at her home- "Verum Kaathuthanga varuthu"-2 Naal Pasalai padarnthu kidanthen!I could have burnt Srikant Nahata by just standing close to him!

Interesting! So you understand telugu. Hmm..no wonder Satyajit Ray called JP the most beautiful woman Indian cinema has ever produced. Andhamaina anubhavam had some nice songs by MSV. All of them are available in musicindiaonline.com.
Other movies where she looked wonderful were Sirisirimuvva, meghasandesam, seethakalyanam etc..

Does anyone know if the song "Kripayarappa..." from the malayalam film "Ormagal Marikkumo?" was by VJ? If so, is there a link to this solo?

Yes Naaz... it was for Vidhubala who is good in dancing in that film. It comes twice in that film. A terrific movie with Shobha as a child artist remembering her ex-birth.
Reg link..... Nope !!

Thank you for the confirmation. I remember seeing Ormagal Marikkumo at New Elphinstone cinema (diagonally across from the Anna Durai statue) in Madras. Around the time of the release, the rumour mills were working overtime, with all sorts of kisukisu about Kamal and Vidhubala, as a result, many tamizhars who didn't know too much malayalam, still flocked to the theatre. Of course, around this time, Nellu, Rasa Leela, Manasa Vachcha Karmana, Ponni, Alinganam (later made as Pagalil Or Iravu) were all doing great business in the tamil metros. One can't overlook the "risque" aspect of these films, and their effect on the repressed tamil male audience :-) These were all successive steps to that bomb-bastic Seema hit Avalude Raavugal (bombed in Hindi - Patita, with Shoma Anand/Mithun Charaborty).
I distinctly remember the song. It was something to cherish. Olyium Olyium also popularised many malayalam songs those days. I have searched high and low for this song...kitti illa!
So many Ormagal, still alive to this day!
(If I may: what is "ex-birth"?)

Naaz, I thought it was released in 'Anna" theatre when it had a grand gala opening...:-)
I meant "Shobha's previous life (pOna jenmam) as "ex-birth"... xqs me if I confused u :-)
It was a terrific song by VJ (though the dance was very so so...). But the "anniyonyam" shown between Kamal and Vidhubala is sssstill I can cherish..!

Thanks in advance.

Try www.asianetglobal.com. It was one of truly rare unbiased (well, almost) 'news & current affairs rich' channels in India until our Surya TV mauled their ratings with their own brand of crass and lowbrow film based programming and serial killers.
It still manages to hold on to some strong shows, none better than 'Munshi' a daily 5-minuter that I rank as the best short political satire.

Thanks for the lead. I'll look it up rightaway.

Are you sure that the film was screened at Anna cinema? I thought it was "Anuraag" (anna-vai anu-vaki) that was the "grand" opening...This memory thing is exhausting :-)
