Last year I did a show on Ilayaraja for Deepavali. IT was so great a hit that the ASTRO Private TV Station is repeating on 9 NOvember at 4.00 pm Malaysian time. This is called RAJANNA RAJATHAAN- covering 25 years of Raja's music contribution. From Annakkili to Azhagi. A great hit. If you can, pls do catch it. You can post your comments on the show here, and I'll respond to them.
Thanks.

Dear IR fans,
I was in office yesterday as the Ilayaja show was on air. I recived many SMS and phone calls.
NOV was the first to call. Apparently he lives near my house. We have not met. He has seen my face for the first time over the show. I will be seeing him on Deepavali day- he has invited me.
This moring emails placing appreciations are pouring in- a clear Indiaction that Raja still reigns supreme- even after the 30 year period.

An information I had left out....
Ilayaraja himself was surprised at the resounding success of this very first song. It is a slow tempo song. Slow tempo songs may become popular alright, but need not always become insant hits. That song was the slowest tempo song of 1996, and to Raja's surprise, the sone emerged with great success and big sensation.

Dear Gyan,
Thank you so much for the enthusiasm. You are listing your favourites,I think. Please do not guess. Only four of your songs concur with mine unless you could substantiate.
The current song is ANNAKILI UNNAI THEDUTHE. Let us discuss that first.

Manisekaran Sir, yes ;---) sorry for guessing, but those songs were like landmark institutions ( i forgot one major song that almost brought the city to the radio each and every time it played - Orey Naal Unai Naan) but, you mean to say you will give for each of the songs a huge write-up like for Annakkili unnai .....? I can't wait...
Thank you, Thank you!!!!!!

Manisekaran: Any reasons why he selected 'annakkili unnaitheduthe' for his debut movie? I was somewhat disappointed to learn that it was originally composed(?) by dancer Padma subramanium.

mani sir
pls ask DR.RAJAMANI to do astro guide book in tamil. no a single tamil word during deepavali. that makes me to cancel the subscription. is there any chance to see ur programme in other tv channel?

Dear Vilvam,
I am seeing Dr.Rajamani one of these days, and I shall convey your sentiments. I do appear on other TVs on offical matters. Last week I appeared on TV 1 to explain on Copyright Matters in the Malay language.
As for the Ilayaraja show I was asked to produce a script. Upon reading my script they told me to host it myself. I hesitated, but finally had to agree.
You may call me at 22748402 Menara Dayabumi, Kuala Lumpur for further clarification.
TQ.

RR
Annakkili has following famous songs:
1. Adi raakaayi mookkaayi S.Janaki
2. Annakkili unnai theduthe - SJ S.Janaki
3. Annakkili unnai theduthu (sad) - TMS
4. Machchanap paaththeengalaa S.Janaki
5. Sonthamillai panthamillai S.Janaki
I am aware that there is a gap on the song Annakkili Unnai Theduthe. Ilayaraja says he sang all the songs to Panju Arunasalam when he met up with him at Palmgrove Hotel. So the question is who was the writer of the lyrics? We have all along been told that lyrics was by Panju Arunasalam. It is clear that Raja must have given only the THATHAKARAM -tune.
In another interview with Gangai Amaran in a program called Thirayum Isayum, a video cassette of which is with me, he says that that Annakkili UNnai Theduthe was a song sang for a long time at Pannaipuram vilage. It seems his mother CHinnathayi Ammal, a temple singer herself used to sing the song. Gangai Amaran even sings a portion of the song:
Annakkeelee Onna Theduthe...
From the aforegoing, it is clear that the tune was already with Raja. That Pathma Subramaniam had composed the song belonging to Pannaipuram folks is news to me.
Ilayaraja is about to start his journey to 6 countries, including Malaysia. If he comes I may ask him this question.
Meanwhile, let me enquire around on your querry.

Manisekaran: I too feel it should be a 'naattuppura paadal'. I cannot confirm Padma S. composed it. (that's why a '?' in my post.) But she made a statement on those lines, on tv. I'm not sure if she meant a dance composition based on this song :-). Probably you can find out more from Raja himself. Thanks.

One more query: why didn't he use his close friend SPB in 'Annakkili'? (superstitious because of their earlier failed tries together? :)

RR,
You are right, it must be for dance composition.
About SP Bala not singing in Annakkili I shall discuss later.
I shall take leave now for DEEPAVALI break.
HAPPY DEEPAVALI TO ALL ILAYARAJA FANS.

You are talking about a famous and hit song. That alone does not make one a landmark song. You shall know as the trhead and discussion progress.

Dear Manisekaran Sir:
Happy Deepavali to you!!! I have a few questions that you may like to ask IR, which I will repeat after you are back:
1. Has he ever heard his own compositions
2. Does he find errors in his compositions
3. How much has Malayalam composers had influence on IR' perception of music (for sure, I know the aboslutely stunning greats VDakshinamoorthy & MKArjunan has had the greatest impact on IR than anyone else, more than Mozart or Salil Choudhry or Bach, in the sense IR has found spontaneity in orchestration from Mozart, Chord progressions from Salilda, Counterpoint or dialog style repetitions from Bach, but for moods, melody and a timeless feel he has complete inspiration of those 2 I mentioned.)
4. What are the idioms that continue to perplex IR, if any at all are there.
5. How does IR manage to switch idioms for Hindi and English
6. What does IR think of Carnatic guitar and mandolin and why he preferred to use only Violin for carantic interludes etc..
7. Will future works like TiS be more easily available?
8. Do we obtain Miss World 96, Moods, First Symphony etc....
Thanks!

RR, the song that got into controversy with Padma was "raman aandalum" from MuLLum malarum, where the intial portions were actually froma folk song by Padma. IR was inspired from a lot of folk songs in his early years. Kannan oru kai kuzhandhai was another song inspired from his mother's folk songs or some other source like that
