Saravanan, good writeup. was the movie in color or b&w ? i always thought, the term paaLayakaarargaL referred to the areas of present PaaLayamkOttai. are these places mentioned by you in that area?

Veerathaai - I have always wondered at the incongruity in the word.KKD has given a perfect mother's viewpoint of a war.Great singing by the duo.
TSB -was she pushed to sing only pathos thorughout her career? Even the happy version of "Kanavu kandeN" is set to Mugari.I have fallen for her voice and singing.
The TN history period of 17,18 and a large part 19th century, the historians refer to as "kaLapirar kaalam" has given scope to story/script writers to run their imaginations wild due to lack of validated historical data.Sivagangai and VBK are among such efforts of glorifications of feudal lords.
when we watched this movie in DD i tried to caution TK Bagavathy "SSR is just giving you a lipservice(with his outsized lips) ,he is going to put you into trouble"
Saravanan
A great effort to match the wonderful of KKD,VR,SV and TSB.I thought Thirumayam was always under Pudhukottai Samasthanam and not Sivagangai. On the English poetry quotes .......well you have added one more passion to my list which has TFM,Cricket,Geography, comics & fictions.I am gonna have my hands full after my retirement! Thanks pal!

Saravanan,
Thanks for providing a nice song, which was missing in my collection :).
Is the director (K.Shankar) of this movie same one who directed Raajarishi?

Geeth, I remember this to be a black and white movie, in DD as noon regional movie (should be 12 years back!).
Did this movie get any national awards??

Geeth, as far as I know, the term 'Paalayakkarargal' refers to the numerous native chieftains, and the area that they controlled was referred to as 'Paalayam'. In fact in the introduction of 'Veerapandiya Kattabomman', he is also referred to as a 'Paalayakkarar', his 'Paalayam' being Paanchanlankurichi.
Rathin, yes it is the same K.Shankar of 'Irai Arul Iyakkunar' fame.
OISG, TSB was a wonderful singer, with an ethereal voice. She was famous for her sad songs, true,- nonetheless she has sung songs of all moods and genre. A small sample: ' Veenaiyin inimaye tharum isaippol saanthamigu gangarathin naadham' (Ramarajyam); 'Sonna solla maranthidalaama (with MSR) & 'Pollathanathai enna solven kanna ini pothum' (both from Penn); 'Aara inbam thandhaar' ( Vedala Ulagam- watch out for her stylish humming in the prelude); 'Il vaazhviniley' (Parasakthi- a breezy duet with Hussain), 'Konjum mozhi sollum kiliye' ( a lilting lullaby, also from Parasakthi); 'Oli padaitha kanninaai' (Rangon Radha); 'Vasantham tharum maalai' (Naam Iruvar)- TSB wins you over with her effortless elegance.

Saravanan,
A nice song and a nice write-up. Yes, it has a very fine feeling of pathos that is moving. Didn't Veerapandya Kattabomman had a similar setting too with the song 'pOgEthe, pOgAthe, en kaNavA...'?
Are you an English Lit. major in your undergrads? Just Kidding :)
I think Kannadasan, unlike Bharatidasan, would be remembered for... No, no, I dont want to get into that kind of talk here :)

bb,
I dont think 'Iravin Madiyil' is a fully 'lifted' Tamil version. Only the prelude in guitar seems to me to be lifted. And I also doubt if it is from 'Shadows'. It is from 'The Ventures', a very popular instrumental band of the 60s. I had all their instrumentals long time back but I cannot recollect the name of this instrumental which features the prelude lifted by Veda. (It is possible that 'Shadows' had their version of the same instrumental music too).

The name of the instrumental is Apache. Great piece.

Da Vinci,
Actually if parallels are to be drawn, then the pathos version of 'Kanavu Kandanen naan kanavu kandaen'(TSB) is the equivalent of Veerapandiya Kattabomman's 'Pogaathe pogaathe en kanava pollatha soppanam naanum kandaen' (wonderfully sung by Ratnamala). Interesting to analyze the styles of Kannadasan and Ku.Ma.Balasubramaniam.

Friends,
One Mr Veerayya, a veteran production manager in Tamil films, has written in Thuglak as follows:
A film named 'marudhupaaNdiyar' was planned with MGR, a little before 'Sivagangai Cheemai' & 'VPK'. A huge set was constructed (in Salem??)as 'periya marudhu- chinna marudhu palace' & the song 'Saanthup pottu thaLathaLakka' was shot with two famous dancers of those days. The producer (named some Chettiyaar), was famous for his tight purse strings! The make up man went to him & asked for some money for making a good wig for MGR. On being questioned quite a few times about the need for the expenditure, the make up man got annoyed and complained to MGR. MGR, in turn, rang up the producer and the argument led to a point-of-no-return. MGR said ' inthap padam avvaLavuthaan! paatta vERa padaththula pOttukkunga!' That's how 'Saanthup pottu thaLathaLakka' entered 'Sivagangai Cheemai'!
Veerayya also says, Sivaji's presence & the colour prints from London of VPK sealed the fate of 'Sivagangai Cheemai'. However, all these years, it has had decent second, third, fourth, ..... runs.

Song of the Day: kavithaigaL sollavaa from uLLam koLLai pOguthE.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kavithaigal.rm
- Sung by Hariharan. Music by Karthik Raja. There is also a SPB/Sujatha version of this song.
- uLLam koLLai pOguthE was released around 2001. It was yet another Sundar.C film, starring Karthik, Prabhudeva and Angela Zaveri. The film was neither a full fledged comedy nor a satisfying love story. Prabhudeva plays the silent lover, while Karthik and Angela are in love. Prabhudeva takes Karthik's place when Karthik dies in an accident in a strange manner. Prabhudeva is a mimicry artist and so, he mimics Karthik's voice to convince Angela (who also loses her eyesight in the accident) that Karthik is alive. A forgettable film.
- Karthik Raja had a few good songs in this album. kavidhaigaL sollavaa is the pick of the lot. There are a couple of short but sweet songs, "adada adada" and "uyirE en uyirE". The film didn't do too well to help Karthik Raja. He followed it up with Dum Dum Dum and a few disappointing albums like Album and Three Roses after that. KR unfortunately has always been the guy who could have made it big with his talent but always seemed to choose the wrong film. He made his debut with Manickam, which proved to be the beginning of the end for Rajkiran. He gave good songs for Grahan, which was released some two years after the audio was out. He delivered a great album for ullaasam, which wiped out J.D/Jerry's career and ABCL's forte into Tamil cinema. Composing for Vijayakanth's turn as James Bond in Alexander didn't help. Dum Dum Dum was a hit, but KR didn't follow it up with hits.

Good song, but HH is not a patch on SPB, sorry :-)
I like the SPB/Sujatha version much better.
Karthik Raja's last 2 albums have been miserable and he has started singing more :-(
