Lyrics by Kambadasan. Music by Shankar-Jaikishan.

Raj Kapoor was riding high on an unprecedented wave of popularity in the early 50s. The magic of his charisma had transcended national frontiers….in the erstwhile Soviet Union, he was the said to be the most popular Indian after Nehru! From a clapper-boy at Bombay Talkies and later an assistant director at Ranjit Movietone, he had already come a long way when he launched Aag (1948) under his R.K.Films banner. Barsat (1949) and Awara (1951) followed, all of which were produced and directed by Raj Kapoor himself, besides playing the lead role; and he was all set to rule over Bollywood earning the sobriquet ‘The Greatest Showman Ever’. Nargis was his co-star in these movies and the sizzling on-screen chemistry between them was but a reflection of their real life intimacy. Shankar-Jaikishan’s wonderful songs were an enchanting part of the RK Films package.
Shankarsingh Raghuvanshi & Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal had learned the rudiments of film music under the renowned Husnlaal Bhagatram, and struck gold with RK’s Barsat. They went on to become the most famous composers of their time, winning not less than 9 Filmfare Awards in the course of their long and illustrious career. And the talented team of Raj Kapoor, S-J, lyricist Shailendra, Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar came up with some of Hindi Cinema’s finest albums.
After Awara, the next film to roll out of R.K.Studios was Aah (1953). Raj Kapoor, Nargis, Pran and Vijayalaxmi were in the cast. Scripted by Inder Raj Anand, the film was directed by Raja Nawate. Crisp editing by G.G. Mayekar and innovative camera work by Jaywant Pathare added to the film’s appeal.
Raj Kapoor played the role of a civil engineer, Raj, who is given to dreamy poetical musings and rapturous appreciation of the wonders of nature. His father reminds him of his mother’s dying wish that he should marry Chandra, the daughter of a wealthy family friend. Filled with misgivings, Raj writes a letter filled with poetry to Chandra, which the blasé Chandra dismisses with callous contempt. However, her younger sister Neelu (Nargis) is intensely moved by the poetic lines; therein she could catch a glimpse of the heart of the poet. Getting her sister’s permission, Neelu replies to Raj’s epistle…and in the course of a flurry of letters Raj and Neelu seem to be gradually falling in love. Propitious circumstances bring them together.
When they are thus looking forward to a blissful future together, Raj discovers that he is suffering from tuberculosis. He takes the painful decision that he should sacrifice his love in the light of his uncertain future, and tries to get Neelu married to his doctor friend. And even goes to the extent of pretending that he had never loved Neelu all along! After several twists and turns, the lovers finally unite.
A surprise inclusion in the cast was singer Mukesh, who appearing as the cart-man carrying an ailing Raj in his tonga, sings the memorable ‘chOti si yE zindagaani’.

Raj Kapoor took the enterprising step of releasing Aah in three languages – Aah in Hindi, Premalekhalu in Telugu and Avan in Tamil. S.D. Sundaram wrote the dialogues for Avan.
You can listen to the Hindi songs here:

And to the Telugu songs here:

Aah’s music album is a treasured souvenir. The immortal lines of Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra, set to haunting tunes by Shankar-Jaikishan, and rendered by Mukesh and Lata, have held generations of listeners spellbound in their timeless magic.
Arudra wrote the lyrics in Telugu and Kambadasan wrote the Tamil lyrics. It is to the credit of both the lyricists, that despite the restriction of having to choose appropriate words matching the close-up shots, and also lines that suit both the metre and matter, they came up with winners. More on Kambadasan here:

I don’t know if Avan was a commercial success, but know this for sure: its songs attained dizzying heights of popularity. Even as late as in the 80s, I have heard them being featured on Radio Ceylon in response to listeners’ requests.
And Raj Kapoor and Shankar-Jaikishan picked A.M.Raja and Jikki to sing the Telugu and Tamil versions of the songs. Thus the unassuming Jikki, who was still in her teens, suddenly found herself along with Raja in Bombay, and singing the songs that Mukesh and Lata had rendered in Hindi. Raj Kapoor, as was his wont, was present during the recording, and is said to have been lost in admiration with the effortless ease with which the disarming Jikki picked up the notes and completed the recording of both the Telugu and Tamil songs in a single schedule!
The 9 songs in Tamil were:
kaN kaaNaadhadhum manam kaNduvidum- AMR, Jikki
aahaa naan indRu aRindhukoNdEn- Jikki
un pErai kEttEn thendRalthanil naan- Jikki
Ekaanthamaam immaalaiyil- Jikki
jalakku jalakku jalakku jalakku- Jikki
minnal pOlaagum indha vaazhkkaiyE- AMR
kaariruL nEram kaalaiyO dhooram- AMR
kalyaaNa oorvalam varum- Jikki
anbE vaa azhaikindRadhendhan moochE- AMR, Jikki
* * * *
Jikki had sung her first duet with Raja just the previous year- ‘iruLilE nilavoLipOl, arugilE avar varuvaar’ for Kumari (1952). And Avan was among the early successes that paved the way for them to soon be celebrated as the unparalleled singing pair of the 50s.
‘Ekaanthamaam immalaaiyil’ (‘ ye shaam ki tanhaaiyaan’ by Lata in Hindi and ‘Ekaanthamu saayantramu’ by Jikki in Telugu) is a bewitching song, where Jikki brings to passionate portrayal the agonizing ache of solitude when the heart is thirsting for love. Kambadasan manages to nudge through some vivid imagery into the lyrics: ‘iravil kaNNeerin mazhai meeruthE…viN meen idhai kaNdu menmElum veNpani kaNNeer vidum’. The song is a thing of beauty, and a joy forever…
‘kalyaaNa oorvalam varum’ ( ‘raja ki aayegi baraat’/ ‘panditlO pellauthunadhi’) is another prized classic. The inner anguish of a lost love, and outward facade of joy…Jikki brings out the subtle irony in a way that is truly remarkable.
‘anbE vaa azhaikindRadhendhan moochE’ ( ‘aa jaarE ab mEra dil pukaara’/ ‘raaraada madhi ninne’ ) is a poignant AMR/Jikki duet. While AMR sounds hauntingly melancholic, Jikki’s plaintive humming and her sighing ‘vazhi kaaNEn bhoomi meedhil’ sound like wails of despair from the very soul…
* * * *
The unassuming nightingale has received her summons and passed on to the world beyond, but she has left behind her songs …songs that are lingering epitaphs carved indelibly in annals of tfm, as in the hearts of thousands of steadfast fans.
