Who is the best SINGER of all the Music Directors?

All times in EST +10:30 for IST.

We have heard MS Visvanathan sing, we have also heard Ilayaraaja sing. We have had our fair share of AR Rahman's skilled voice and also were forced to put up with Deva's singing at times.

I shouldn't fail to mention SA Rajkumar and Maragathamani although they haven't sang much.

Karthik Raja sings too, as does his younger brother Yuwan. Ramana Gokula sang in "Badri".

WHO among all these music directors are the BEST SINGERS?

  I think it is MSV. I have read a compliment from Susheela which goes as follows:
  
  "ivar paadara maadhiri sangathigaL ennaala paada mudiyalaiiye" - (she said with a slight whimper -the magazine quoted)
  
  ivar = MSV
  
  and one good example is "niththam niththam en kaNNodu inbak kanaa" from koottup puzukkaL

  i think it is MSV and the closest to him is IR others are farthest to these two.
  
  imho, i believe, even if we take all india level these two would be the top most contenders (opinions are most welcome because im not among those widely listened audience).

  Kupps, the one I mentioned above are just examples. Perhaps there are OTHER MD's that I have not mentioned but are better singers than IR or MSV (but of my PERSONAL opinion, MSV is IT:)

  My opinion is that IR is the best singer of all MD's!
  
  This is not because I am His hardcore fan. I put forth the following achievements of IR as a singer which are unique for Him only.:
  
  1) After A.M.Raja, He is the only singer of all MD's to sing successful duets. But A.M. Raja was primarily a playback singer and secondarily only a MD. Also, He has sung duets with most of the female playback singers around in TFM.
  
  2) He is the first singer of all MD's to sing in all four South Indian languages :
  
  Samples:

  Tamil - Many
  Telugu - Coolie No.1
  Kannada - Nammoora Manthaarahoove, Bhoomi Geetha
  Malayalam - Kaliyoonjal, Yaathra Mozhi
  
  3) He is the first singer to be accepted as a typical title singer. It was considered auspicious if He sang the title song.
  
  4) He is the most versatile singer of all available MD's. He has sung for all situations alike though He may be special in certain situations.
  
  5) He has sung in other MD's music
  
  MSV - Krishnaganam-2, Title song in 'Sugamana Ragangal'
  Dhakshinamoorthy - In a Malayalam film
  Karthik Raaja - Ullasam
  Yuvan Shankar Raaja - Nandhaa
  Gangai Amaren - Many films (Title songs)
  
  6) The accurate Tamil pronounciation of His is possible only by Him.
  
  7) The way He excels in certain special situations like:
  
  Engey Sellum - Sedhu
  'Idhayam Oru Koil', 'Naanaaga Naanillai Thaaye', 'Udhaya Geetham Paaduven' - IR versions are considered better than SPB's by many people I know who are SPB fans!!!
  
  8) The nativity when He sings folk songs is unmatched.
  
  9) He has sung folk, western, ghazal, carnatic, etc with ease.

  My vote is for IR:-)
  
  Though I like MSV's music, his singing is not palatable to me (mainly due to his voice which is not OK with me). The only OK song is `sollaththAn ninaikkiREn, mellaththAn thavikkiREn'. He may be good in singing `tough' ones, but not quite cool with my ears, which accepts mostly soft sounds or `inimai':-))
  
  The others don't come anywhere near. However, if AMR is to be considered, he'll win by miles (the losers include IR):-))

  I agree with you - If AMR is considered, he'd be number 1, a large gap then IR.
  
  MSV is good, but his singing talent in my opinion is limited (only suited for one or two types of songs and he is not capable of much gamakams leave alone his voice).

  I would vote for IR also as the best MD-Singer.
  
  And I wud say this is a good topic. Plz every could for an experimental sake think for a moment and analyze if we all find IR's songs good because of the brilliance of the tune or because of IR's voice. Is there a song where u didnt like the tune but was appealed by the voice value. can u name it.
  
  When I think of IR's voice I think of
  
  "poo malayee"
  "naan thedum sevvanthi poo ithu"
  
  but i was blown over by the song even b4 the voice started.
  
  "kuyil paatu" is a good starting point. and "ennai thalatta varuvaalo" is a good starting point for the contrary. IR's version of "ennai thalata varuvalo" was his interpretation of that master piece I somehow liked HH's version more:-)

  Bharath - I felt the same way abt "yennai thAlAtta varuvALO" initially... maybe u shud listen closely to the charaNams again - "nAn kEtkum badhil ingu vArAdhA".. etc (pardon any mistakes) In these sections raja emotes better than HH - who just sings plainly.
  
  Another such combo (IR-HH) is "oor urangum nEraththil" from KUT. I liked IR version more - more life in the tune.

  I kind of think that some songs were practically spoiled by IR (sorry IR Fans). I got nothing against IR's music for a maestro is a maestro. I'd rather hear Ganggai Amaran, one song that sticks in my mind is "Sholai Pushpanggale"
  
  Bharath, just imagine, how wonderful "Naan Thedum Sevvanthi Poo" would have sounded if KJY or SPB had sung it.

  MY vote would ne MSV and IR in Tamil. MSV has sung a beauty in "Sollathan Ninaikiren". IR has done a great job many times. Only a MD can know about the exact need to craft a song. If he can make a KJY or SPB sing he should be a genius. I will not accept the fact that IR would do a far lesser job than KJY (example Naan Thedum!!).What a beauty rendered in Hamsanadham. Only IR's voice could have bought that effect. Again KJY and Balu are boons to TFM.But IR is a boon to this world.

  True enough Veera. I agree.
  
  He can tell and make them sing in this way and that, but that does not mean he can do the same with his own voice! Directing and actually singing are two different things, and the voice should suite the song.
  
  For example, I will swear by IR's rendition of "Nila Athe Vaanethe Melley" from Nayakan. No one else can sing THAT song as well as IR. Just as "Veetheke Veethekke Vaase Padi Vendum" from that movie Karthik starred.
  
  IMHO, some songs sung by IR would have sounded better if it was sung by other "singers", but there are songs which only IR's style of singing can do the justice (as the example above"
  
  For instance, could anyone else have sung "Columbus" from Jeans and "Anthe Arabic Kadaloram" from Bombay better that ARR? He knew where his voice is needed and suitable. Imagine how bad "Ennavale adi Ennavale" from Kaathalan would have sounded if ARR had sung it.
  
  This is NOT another IRR Vrs ARR, I am just quoting some examples :)

  so does SAR, sang few, you know which ones are :)
  
  anyway, IMO, IR spoiled many songs than given life to it. I'm not here to fight, that's my opinion.
  I too agree about AMR. if AMR is not included, then for sure MSV. check the kumudam site for some of his songs, if you have not listened these before :)

  MSV,IR,ARR & AMRaja. The best MD singers. It may not be good to compare them. These four people exceled in their own way and in first level.
  Chandrabose had given some good ones like "Yeendi muthamma" & "Poonjchittuk Kuruvikala". He is second level. All others are in third level.

  M: I have listened to his songs for tv serials and couple of songs in movies (btw, 'kaalam kalikaalam ' is by Srinivas). He is pretty good (for an MD).

  RR, as far as the CD that I have, kaalam kalikaalam is by Barathwaj.
  VS did sing few songs too :)
