I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)

  AVR: They also have another album released by HMV in the mid-90s - around 97 I think. I don't have the title of that album - but have the loop recording on tape!!
  (It has Sri Ramchandra kripalu Bhajamana and Moko Kahan thu Dhoondhe Bandhe)
  
  I have the Hey Govind Rakho Sharan as well. Chalo chale jasuda dham sakhi ri bohut sataye shyam...is that the song you are thinking of?

  No naaz - thats not the one. Chalo man... is a MEERA BHAJAN.
  
  I think shri ramchandra kripalu bhajaman is from hey govind rakho sharan (it has BOTH ram and krishna bhajans)...i have tapes of these (not HMV ones..but i got them taped from a music store coz the originals were long out of stock).

  Have anyone heard the telugu song from Gharsana by vani and bala Kurisenu virisinule the telugu version of Thungathe vizhigal rendu by Janaki and Jesudas. I think the telugu version is very nice. Vani have sung superbly.

  It is "koorai". I have Soundharyame varuga varuga album with me. It does not have "iravil iraNdu". It has "ithO un kAthali" and "thanimaiyil yaar ivaL". But on the net "thanimaiyil" is listed under AzagE unnai ArAthikkiREn. ???
  
  Has anyone listened to "kuththum oosi valikkum" from "Gharjanai"? It is another bOdhai song.

  Thanimayil is from AUA. Not Soundaryame.

  Yep, it is. Nice duet with PJC. VJ's voice always suited actors like Sumitra, SriVidya, Lakshmi, Sujatha, SriPriya, KR Vijaya...something to do with the characters these women portrayed or the other way around - VJ's voice lent character to the songs in their films.

  Yes thats right. Though I swear I know not one word of Tamil, I could sense something strange and moving in VJs voice in meghame meghame, en kalyana and elluil engo.
  
  Of course, I was unable to grasp every fine nuance, but overall I was moved by those songs.
  And those songs sound extra special if u listen to them at night,or in a quiet place.
  
  This kind of emotion that all the veteran singers portray, is lacking today.

  Nenjil Oru Raagam has one of VJ's best solos: Nalamo Ena Naan Kaetpaen...a real classic. I also find her Nadhamenum Kovilile to be quite staggering every time I listen to it. Did you listen to Hey Giridharane - that is quite an impressive number...and the malayalm pronunciation is spotless.

  nadhamenum.. is not a breathless number exactly (or have I missed sth.??). Which movie is nenjil oru raagam from.
  
  I listened to hey giridhane... i dont know about the malayalm pron. but I frankly did not like it. Its not her fault, I found the tune rather unimpressive. IMO of course.

  Nenjil Oru Raagam is the movie - The song is: Nalamo Ena Naan. I don't know what you mean by "breathless" - Nadhamenum - may not be "breathless" but it sure is an amazing example of breath-control. Neel D may have other songs for our understanding of "breathless" - yenna Neel, sariya?

  Another greta number by VJ-Chandira piraiparthen -from the movie kizhakkum merkkum sandhikindrana.
  This song used to be most popular song during Ramzan. This is a pretty lengthy solo rendered beautifully by VJ.
  The Nalamo Ena naan- is another classic-with great modulations again rendered effortlessly by VJ

  But Naaz, I used to like "Kanden Engum" by Vaani better than the SJ's version. But, recently I heard both. Sorry to say that I found - VJ's singing that song paled in comparison before SJ's! I certainly feel that VJ could have sung it better! Or is the range of the song the culprit? MSV was very good in selecting singers for his songs. Almost all of his songs by Vani Jayaram are super hits! And then the situation in the movie - while SJ sings for ghost, VJ sings for real woman - this might have entailed the difference in the interludes as well as the rendition - not sure.

  One of the producers of Nandhaa said, in the "Nandhaa" thread, that VJ's song was replaced by the "amma" song by IR. He said, rather vaguely, that it was a descision based on several different constraints. However, I think VJ should have sung that "amma" song. It would have become a classic. I guess they couldn't foresee a magic.

  Balaji, VJ has sung "chandira pirai" with so much bhaavam, it brings a modest and happy Muslim bride in front of your eyes. Nice song to sing along. It was a hit song. It would play from the tea shops many times when I was walking to my high school.

  O Bansuri bol is indeed the name of a song - it's not the Govind rakho sharan album, however. This one has a variety of lyricists like Maya Govind, Udhav Kumar, Shamim Jaipuri etc composing the bhajans. Most appear to be freshly composed for this album excepting a Guru Nanak bhajan & one id'd as traditional.

  That trad. one is "SUMIRAN KARLE MERE MANA".
  Its by GURU NANAK. It has excellent SAROD interludes. A version of this song has also been sung by DILRAJ KAUR and one by SUDHA MALHOTRA also, I think for RAGHUNATH SETH again.

  Sometimes I find VJ not doing her best in some songs. manaivi vantha neram by KJY was excellent but by VJ ketkavae romba kashtamagha irukku.
