Hi all,
I have learnt lots of Tamil words through tfm, but there are so many words that I still dont know the meaning of. I would love to improve my Tamil vocabulary, but resources are limited. I was wondering if we can have a thread that helps out in this regard. People post the words they dont understand and someone who knows responds with the answer. For this to succeed the old-timers have to get involved, bcos I dont know many younger guys who know much Tamil words :)
Ex.
1. samsaaram enbathu veenai..santhosham enbathu raagam.. xxx xxx illai
I used xxx because I dont even know what he was saying. was it "salanam galadhi illai"? What does that mean?
2. En mana vaanil siragai virikkum.. from Kasi. There is a line kalakalakala vena thulli kuthikkum sinnanchiru kalaiyey.. what does kalai mean?
3. Anjanam. What does it mean? (Used in various songs)
4. Uchi vaguntheduthu pichu poo vacha kili..What does this mean?
Please answer people!

just one more request.. please dont make any comments about the Music Directors involved, whether +ve or -ve. This hopefully will keep the thread clean.

1. Samsaaram enbathu veenai, santhosham enbathu raagam, salanam athil illai...
(I hope you understand the meaning now, if not I will explain it more clearly)
2. Kala kala kalavena thulli kuthithidum chinnan chiru alaiye...
(Same as above)
3. Anjanam means collyrium.
Collyrium is the bluish-black pigment used to paint the eye lashes of women.
4. Uchi vaguntheduthu pichi poo vacha kili
Uchi means tip, vaguntheduthu means to part, pichi poo means loose flowers.
Therefore the line means to part the hair and decorate with flowers.

No. 1 could be "salangangal athil illai" where salanangal is the plural of salanam.

thanks Ruben!
does salanam mean sangadam or friction between people?
does pichi poo mean the same as uthiri poo?

on: Mon Apr 14 09:10:31 EDT 2003
tigger,
pichchi poo is very similar (in looks) to malligai - jasmine in english. the vaasam is very different. same color - white or off-white.
uthiri poo is a general phrase. the flowers that have fallen from the plant or from the woman's hair. a new movie is talked about called uthiraatha pookaL which is the opposite of uthiri pookaL.
salanangaL - i wait for someone to explain this.

Salanam or chalanam
i always had a doubt that probably we got this word from english world nonchalant
noncha·lantly
meaning:.........
Word History: A nonchalant person is not likely to become warm or heated about anything, a fact that is underscored by the etymology of the word nonchalant. It stems from Old French, where it was formed from the negative prefix non- plus chalant, the present participle of the verb chaloir, “to be concerned.” This in turn came from the Latin word calre, which from its concrete sense “to be hot or warm” developed the figurative sense “to be roused or fired with hope, zeal, or anger.” French formed a noun nonchalance from the adjective nonchalant that was borrowed into English by 1678; the adjective itself was borrowed later, as it is not attested for another half-century

Tigger,
1.'naaNal' is one form of tall grass, found on riverbeds. It is normally quoted for its quality of bending with the tide and not breaking.
2.'seppudanE sei' must be 'seppamudan sei', meaning 'do it the right/proper way'

Chalanam comes from Sanskrit and is written as salanam. Ekantha velai literally means time alone. Punnai is a tree. Punnai vanam is a forest/garden full of punnai trees. Good to know that people learn Tamil from movie songs.
