I feel of-late there are fewer songs from SPB! I am of the opinion we should use SPB more and more in his life time because there is never going to be another SPB!
Due respect to other singers and no denying the fact that new singers should be given opportunities. This intention of this discussion is not to offend fans of other singers.
Why our music directors do not reaslise this?

sivaselvam;
Q) Why our music directors do not reaslise this?
A) No Idea, that's what we are puzzled about, I think it is the producers, who insist on certain singers, perhaps the songs composed by MDs nowadys are not good enough for SPB, remember KJY has not been used properly for the last 10 years!
there are only few songs composed by MD's like ARR, Vidyasaagar, Bhavadraj,...are good enough for SPB, only about 10% of composed nowadays are worth listen to, perhaps that is another reason for not utilising SPB, to the maximum, like he was used from 1966 - 1996.

SPB's tamizh pronounciation and voice modulation are toooooo good. That's why MDs dont use him any more?! He should pronounce 'zha' as 'la', and use a bit of 'nose' as well while singing...then he will get a chance
The fact is that 'ippo varugindra perumbalana paadalgalil, thamizhukkum and thamizhissaikkum entha mukkiathuvamum illai..' MDs dont need SPB for these songs. They call it 'the trend' and I (we?) call it 'kashta kaalam'?!

The title of this "thread" is "SPB Songs For
TFM". The title suggests that SPB songs in
Tamil, as compared to Kannada and Telugu etc.,
will be discussed.

ok, pls answer the question.
1) Why is SPB not being utilised any more in TFM, while he is being utilised in Telugu / Karntaka?
2) Is the producers who are stoping the MD choice for Singers?
3) @56+ SPB still has youthful rich baritone voice, yet some of the actors say he is old, of course, SPB is a grandad, but his voice is like a 25 year old, what do u say?

Raghu
Do you think that the best of SPB is in
Tamil? If you think so then I will be right
to assume that you have not heard his Kannada
and Telugu songs, specially of 80's.
I have heard SPB in all the southern languages
and can say that despite occasional high quality songs in all the laguages, he had been much better in Kannada and Telugu.
Telugu than in Tamil

I am not a telugu guy, but I just love songs from geethanjali, sagara sangamam, shankara baranam etc.. though I can't understand the lyrics.
I haven't heard much of SPB's kannada songs. Is there any website where I can listen to them?

x,
You can listen Kannada songs at www.kannadamusicworld.com
There are hundreds of other kannada songs
sites on the web as well. Try yahoo search
with the words kannada songs.

Raghuvaran;
Now coming to your questions:
1- SPB is being used in Telugoo, Kannada; why not in Tamil?
Well, in the first place, he is not being utilised extensively
even in Telugu and Kannada since 1999 at least. In Telugu
specially, how uncouth and unrefined Udit Narayan's voice and
style seems, and Oh God, he is being made one of the the first rank singers
there!!! It is true that in the mid and late 90's the quality of
film music is, generally, very low, with a rare exception here and
there; yet with the voice and resourcefulness of SP Baala Subramaniam,
songs were tolerable. Now they are not (at least for me).
As for the reason why taamil composers are not employing him
anymore, the truth is that from the beginning TFM was the only music
industry in which SPBS despite his intention could not dominate immediately.
He was second only to TM Soundaraajan (am I pronouncing correctly?) since
1969-70, yet remained so untill about 1979-80; a period of almost full
decade! Only then did he climb to top position in taamil music. Whereas
in Kannara and Telugu he had achieved this position in about 1970.
So if there was a bit of resistence against SPB in taamil even in his
peak days, then it is not strange that now he is being ditched. It is, however,
a surprising fact that in 96-97 SPB was, perhaps, singing more songs in
Tamil than in Telugu!
2- Your second question is about who is stopping music directors' choice
of singers.
It is not necessary, Raghu, that producers are stopping composers from taking
SPB. In the name of trend we have seen very weird events, since the mid-nineties.
This new "trend" means there is no place for melody, sublimity, and emotion
in music. And so there is no place for SPB. Untill the MD's will follow this
"trend" there is no befitting place for SPBS.
3- It is right that the voice of SPB has shown no signs of aging.
But also bear in mind that most of the playback singers' voices do not
have much effect due to aging. Rafi's voice in the late 70's was not
that much of an old man's. Chitra's voice despite in her 50's does not
seem it, nor that of S Jaanaki despite her advanced age.
There were some whose voices did show signs of aging. Kishore
in the mid 80's sounded no young man.
Don't you think that in the 90's, specially since the mid 90's
SPB has been mostly producing a shrill version of his voice. Well,
it may keep the effect of aging completely away, yet one is, at times,
irritated by it.

I am bit sad by these so called "trends".
I would love to see SPB used regularly in films till his life time as it was done for Gantasala. I cant think of any other singers atleast for Kamal and Rajini...
Me too mostly listen to Tamil songs but dont mind listening to telugu or kannada if they are sung by SPB.

Could not agree more.
Chitra in her 50's really, I thought she would be about 40!
Yes, I do love SPB's telugu songs big time, even though I have no knoweldge of the language, it is SPB who made me listen to Hindi/ Telegu through his wonderful voice.
Siva selvam;
You can also listen to SPB's telugu songs at www.raaga.com

are your sure chitra is her early 50's? I don't think so. She was a teen girl when she sang her first song 'poojaikketha poovithu'.
I agree that for SPB, he had to wait many years to become no.1 in tamil but that was because of our hero dominance in tamil films. Sivaji and MGR did not want to try SPB for a long time. TMS was always their first choice. Also TMS did not like the entry of SPB in early days. It was definitely not bcos SPB was a bad singer than anyone who existed at that time.
I don't know about kannada, but in telugu, I think, SPB was the first preference for all the producers and heros right from the beginning.
Then why everybody thinks SPB is old. He is just 54. He can still sing for atleast another 10 years or so.

very true!, TMS always had a an issue with SPB, perhaps he did not like the fact that SPB will be taking over him.

has any of u ppl heard the song "Anbulla appa" by SPB from the sivaji film "anbulla appa", SPB amazingle modulated his voice like an elderly father to suit Sivaji's character, which can not be done by another other singer, even TMS can not do that .

Chitra in her 50s????? No, I think she must be in her late 30s or so. Or maybe just 40.
SPB's voice now isnt exactly divine any more. Its not the golden voice it earlier was. Effect of age is prominent!

DEVI, Ninaiviley manaivi endru is a lovely song by SPB from a film called 'Sarigamapa', (Not the Parthiban movie, which is' Sarigamapadani') which doesn't seem to have been released. The song was immensely popular in 1983, when it was played almost daily on Ilangai vanoli. I remember seeing a record of the film, which had actress Rupa on the cover. MD was someone called Sri Kumar.

Raghu,
I agree with "Anbulla Appa" song.
There are other songs by SPB for sivaji like
1) poopole un punnagayil
2) Kalam Maralam
3) Thiruththerial varum silayo
These are all matched perfect fro sivaji.
