In Cinema Express, vAmanan has been writing a
series of articles about old TFM artistes, under
the heading, 'thamizh thirai isai sAdhanaiyALargaL'.
I think it is very worthwhile to bring these to the
attention of our forumers. As I get time I will
scan and put these articles in this thread.
Discussions on the artistes are welcome.

The first article I am posting is on someone
whose name 99 percent of the forumers wouldn't
even know.. DB Ramachandran. He was an assistant of
G Ramanathan and later composed music for a few
movies. Here are the articles..

there are some square holes on the pages.. do they had some snaps of dbr??

haris:
One was a photo of DBR and the other was some news
about a movie that actress Saritha is directing.
I removed DBR's photo because it came out very
poorly in the scanning.

sk,
Thanks for your endeavor. Great article. This is a very valuable thread to this forum, it should eventually get permanent thread status. I hope to read many more such articles.

Yes, I feel the articles by vAmanan are valuable.
If someone could also collect all the postings
made by Manisegaran in this forum and add it to
this material, it could form a treasure.
Haris:
Let me see what I can do with the photos.
Here is the first part on V Kumar...

If you want to have a good look at GR.. you
should see the movie,
1000 thalai vAngiya apoorva chinthAmaNi
GR acts as a big villain (as kapada sanniyAsi, a job
very well done by GR). The movie is very very
old. But it is quite interesting, with a lot of
interwined stories. If you can manage to remember
all the plots in the movie.. then you can be sure
that you have a fantastic memory. The video of
the movie is available with the Columbia people
in Malaysia.

sk: GR is not the villain in 1000 thalai - he plays the good sanyasi who helps the hero on his quest. Sings a couple forgettable songs in his own voice.
Suggestion - can we combine this thread with the Old songs thread that's already permanent? Seems like we can revive that thread where nothing much is going on currently.
Vamanan recently published expanded essays based on this series as a book - thiRai isai alaigaL. These new essays hopefully will be published as part 2.

Thanks for the correction of GR's role in 1000
thalai... I had always been thinking that it was
GR who acted as the villain! Let us keep this
thread going for some time and then go back to
the 'Old Songs' thread after we run out of fuel here. :-))
bb:
If you are planning to put the scanned files in
newtfmpage, shall I send everything to you? Then I
don't have to keep copies in my angelfire account.

I think many of Vamanan's articles are
available on cinema express website archives.
I saw them in december. The website should be
cinemaexpress.com. Can someone take the time and
try. It would save SK's effort of scanning,
even though I still prefer to see the look and
feel of printed pages to the web pages.

rjay:
I have all the links to the archives that you've
mentioned. But I am not happy with them because:
1. They put much less than one third of each
article; and 2. They have missed many articles
and instead keep putting repeated copies of the
same article for a couple of months.. example,
Papanasam Sivan's article has 4 copies. I felt
that it will be complete and clean if we scanned
everything and put them in our forum archives.
But there is one positive thing about those web
archives of cinema express.. they contain clean
photographs. I will work out a way with bb and
put those photographs together with the scanned
articles that we are putting.
The next item is the first part of KVM. I have
scanned the pages and sent it to bb. He will be
posting it here soon.

here are a couple of good articles on KVM.

http://newtfmpage.com/my/md/kvm4.html - an article in kungumam.
have updated the KVM page too. have a look.

sk - another place to dig: www.intamm.com. They use their own font and have articles relevant to this forum on their Music World and Sarigamapathanee magazine pages. Music World has articles/interviews in almost every issue - Jamunarani, kumudini, MSV, S Janaki, LR Eswari, PS, TMS, P Leela, Pugazhenthi/KVM, PUC, MKT etc.
Sarigamapathanee focuses on classical music - so they have a series called thiRaiyil malarntha sangeetham or something like that. More on P Sivan, Kamala Laxman dance songs, NC Vasanthakokilam ... The archives are also available.

sk,
Thanks for the explanation. I am relieved
that you have decided to scan the pages ;)
I am sure this collection
will add great value to our understanding of
TFM, a running commentary for the real audio
libraries of PPP and IR archives.
Thanks

the article on v.kumar says that "kalyaaNa saappaadu pOdavaa" from major chandrakanth is the original of autokaaran autokaaran.. is this true? anyone heard this song?
- From: sk (@ boo.ucar.edu)
on: Thu Apr 27 06:00:41 EDT 2000
bb:
It is not true. In the charaNam of 'autokAran'
Deva has lifted (directly) from parts of 'kalyANa
sAppAdu pOdavA' and then continued with his own
tune. But, when you listen to this part of 'auto
kAran', you can immediately feel the similarity.

haris: www.intamm.com/sariga/ and www.intamm.com/musicworld/index.htm. There are links to back issues on the main page of the latest issue. While Sarigamapathanee hasn't been updated since Feb, Music World's April issue has an interview with (Shankar) Ganesh, an article/interview about Lalgudi Jayaraman and a write-up on tamilisai.com. This website apparently will have songs from old tamil films as well.
Also, check out the songs section to listen to 60s songs, IR/Deva/ARR hits and KBS hits.
Note that the font doesn't work well w/ Win 98 & Netscape.

Music worlds, Jan/Feb issues have a very
interesting interview from MSV.
