Hello,
Let's list out the songs that fall under the category, "Karpanai Tamizh" meaning with pure Tamizh in it and soul stirring music. And also the "Virpanai Tamil" which means songs like Manmatha Rasa and Maro Maro

i think after the entry of ARR, tamil songs have reached to this level.. all the gifted poets like variamuthu, vali have been compelled to write lyrics in this fashions. Due this, the lyricsts has spoiled the tamil culture.
thank god, kannadasan has left us

Even before ARR's entry there were songs like
oranga sriranga kopara thenga
vadi en kappa kilangey
AAsai kiley 1/2 kilo puliye azukina thakkaliye
sorry i can remember only a few.

I am actually not against the virpanai tamil songs unless its once in a while. The worst component of virpanai tamil -> Virasa tamil is what is getting on the high side. Everyone is to blame, the MD, the lyricist and the director or whoever responsible to okay the song lyrics.

Even in Kannadasam period there were songs like
Vaangona Vaangona. I am not sure who wrote this, but am sure evn the great Kannadasan wrote a few like this.
So no point blaming IR or ARR for inventing these. But have to admit, letely the good songs to bad songs ratio has been greatly reduced.
karpanai thamizh is found only rarely in songs these days.

One can easily identify the difference between the two! If it is in any way related to the story and the situation, you can see 'kaRpanai thamizh' flowing from the pens of these lyricists; if it is 'thiNichchified' to attract the masses, then 'VT' will start flooding in!
'narumugaiyE'--KT
'yelandhappazham'-- VT
'idhu oru ponmaalaippozhudhu'-KT
'OrampO,OrampO'-VT
Like this there are so many!
But, to me one sweet exception where a perfect blend of KT and VT both made the song so enjoyable was 'rAththiriyil pooththirukkum thaamarai thaan peNNO'!

Can you name one song which addresses both these issues- I mean KT and VT appearing in the same stanza?
will wait for your answers!
YIA!

The pallavi of andhi mazhai addresses both in the same stanza.
andhi mazhai pozhigrathu, ovvoru thuzhiyilum.. ->KT
indiran thOttathu mundhiriye , manmatha..
->VT
VM has a lot of songs in 90's .

VM leads any other lyricist of any time when it comes to blending his kaRpanai to provide a wrapper for viRpanai . The entire song of andhi mazai is a good example
"
nenjuporu konjamiru thaavani visirigal veesugiraen
manmatha ambugal thaiththa idangalai santhanamaai anai poosugiraen "
In the 90's , he used english words for wrappers.

veeN 'kaRpanai' yellaam ulagil
aRpudham yenRE ninaiththu
'viRpanai' seyyaadhE madhiyai
This is avery old song from Sivaji's first picture paraasakthi penned by kalaignar karunaanidhi! When this thread was started, the two words took me on the 'memory lane' to these verses!

sk,
That song is also a classic combination of KT and VT.
The line you quoted is KT. The begining of the song goes:
oh rasikkum seemane vaa, jolikkum udai aninthu, kalikkum nadanam purivom
btw, are you sure it was mu. ka. who wrote it? My guess, based on the thaththuvam, would have been Pattu koottai

I am +ve that it was by Mu.Ka. BYW, i was only quoting the words of K&T in that verse pertaining to this thread's topic!
Again, there is a subtle beauty of KT&VT in the other song I had mentioned; 'rAththriyil pooththirukkum thaamaraithaan peNNO'.
Every line is innocently presenting as KT but if you start thinking a bit deeper, each line is a VT!! Especially the second stanza,
'maanganikaL .......... avasiyam'.

I think Virpanai style was started by IR and spoiled totally by ARR and now the mettle is passed over to HJ.
IR's contribution:
1. Vaadi En Kappa
2. Orambo Orambo..
3. Enna Paattu Paada Enna Thallam Poda
4. Paatalle Buthi Sonar..
5. Aasai Kiliye 1/2 kg puliye
6. ...
ARR's contribution:
Kathirikaa...Kathirikaa (thats the worst)
Uruvathai Karuvakinal -- (Hardware, Software, pager, etc.) Kathal Desam
Hello Doctor -- Same movie
Telephone Mani Pol -- Any girl laughs like Telephone Ring?
Petta Rap -- Kadhalan
No Problem -- Some Prabu Deva & Nagma Movie
Usilam Patti
Chikku Bukku Rail
Shakkalakka Baby
Almost all songs in Boys (except Thigithigi Thinthen..)
....

dorai,
isnt the song "aenna paattu paada aenna thaaLam pOda" a no-frill, rustic, simple song.
IMHO, we cannot categorize that(for that matter such songs) into VT.
Also, I cannot completely agree on categorizing "aasai kiLiyae" and "paataalae budhdhi sonnar" in this category, though they are not KT, they are not VT also.
we can very well add "naeththu raathiri yaemmaa" kind of songs into this.

Kupps,
Agreed. There are many more songs from IR falling into the Virpanai category. Can't recall more. But my ARR's list is almost correct I believe

"Thigithigi Thinthen" was there any song like that...or is it Yegiri Kuthiten!..
:)

LOL, paran, the first couple of months I heard that song, I thought ti was "thithithigi thithen', then I was like.. that doesnt make any sense. Its kinda annoying when some words in teh songs dont sound like a real word... err... yeah.

BY the same token,
the song "narumugaiyE" from "iruvar" is a classic example of KT and VT!!
There is a song in 'puranaanooRu' with the similar words which has been modified to suit the present generation thereby 'K' became a "V'.!!

sss,
a lot of the lines and similes in that song were borrowed from Sangam poetry. VM himself said this about the song. But I don't think that makes it VT. I still think it is a beautifully comeposed song, even though not all the 'karpanai' is VMs own.
The lines that I can point out to off the top of my head are:
atrai thingal iv veNilavil.... By Paari Mahalir
sempulam serntha neer thuli pol.....By Sempulappeyal Neeraar
There's tons more in that song.

Confusion! (surprisingly not caused by Kupps!)
Virpanai Tamizh...Is this the same as "Meaningless Words In Songs"?? If there is any difference between the two??
Dorai,
Hardware, software, pager, hello, doctor, baby,no,problem etc etc. Aren't these English rather than Virpanai Tamizh?! ;-)

Paran,
Its "Thigithigi Thithen" -- That has all the still camera shots (picturised nicely)
Sorry for the typo.
C~P,
Whether its English or Thanglish it comes under the Virpanai Tamil category in my opinion.

paran, curryleaf and Dorai,
It is
"egiRi kudhithaen vaanam idithadhu
paadhangaL iraNdum paravai aanadhu
viralgaLin kaambil pookkaL muLaithadhu
puruvangaL irangi meesai aanadhu",
with the lines hyperbolically describing the side-effects of falling in love. The girl sings the same words too, Kabilan loses five points for the unsightly picture that paints! (Wonder if that's how the circus lady got her moustache ...)

LOL@interpreter.
I now know dude, thank you very much.
I hated the way it was picturized by the way... the matrix-ish graphics got on my nerve.
