I got a 5 pack cassette from HMV recently from India. There are 74 songs in the pack and each song has a short introduction by MSV. TKR has a speech in the very beginning of cassette 1. MSV provides very nice insights into some of the songs.
I will try to post as many interesting intros as possible in this thread.

In his speech TKR mentions that he served as a violinist in HMV itself in the 30s and 40s. He served as an assistant to CR Subbaraman and joined hands with MSV for the 1952 release, Panam, produced by NSK. Their last movie (at least of the golden period) was Aayiratthil Oruvan in 1965.
There is also a small booklet with biographical information about MSV and TKR.

TKR says that NSK felt that MSV-TKR has a better ring to it than TKR-MSV and thats why they were known as MSV-TKR.

the cd version is available at Shrimati's in Berkeley. www.shrimatis.com
HMV/RPG has created a new series called 'navarasam' nine collections of songs on themes like anandam, nagaichuvai, bhakti, sogam, kathal etc. Just a rehash of previously released songs, but may be worth it for a starter collection.
also found a couple of collections 'superhits of 1956, 1957.' Presumably, a new series?
Another interesting trend - pirated cds are being rereleased by HMV Malaysia. e.g. thillai ambala nataraja, am raja duets.

do not expect a great quality. The quality of EMI CDs especially the ones pressed in India are just worst than the pirated 30 rupees cassettes :-)

I don no u hu - Actually I think the quality is not bad at all, considering the ancient-ness of some of these songs.
But the greatest bonus is in hearing the complete songs, i.e. off the track! :-)

Ramki & NOV:
The volumes seem to be arranged according to the years.
As years passed from the middle 50's to the middle
60's VR's songs got better and better in quality until
the worst possibility (their separation) occured
in 1966. I should get these CDs. Does anyone know
whether they are available in Singapore? If not,
where can you get them in India?

Ramki - OK, OK, I will accept the honour. :-)
I agree with you that Vol. 3 has better songs than Vol. 1, but this is subject to personal preference, right?
SK - You are absolutely right!
Vol 1 is before 1959, Vol 2 1959 - 1962, Vol 3 1962/1963, Vol 4 1963/1964 and Vol 5 1964/1965.
As for availability, it says that the collection is for sale in India only and not to be exported out of India. I suppose it is easily available in Chennai.
The cost of the collection is Rs275 for all five cassettes or Rs275 each CD.

Vijay, Karthi: I actually like the fact that in most movies, a less popular song is played than the "best" or the most popular song.
Vol I.
Enge Theduven from Panam. I think this is there just to have a representative song from the first movie and as a voice of NSK.
Van Meedhile from Chandi Rani: This movie was made in three languages simulataneouly. The Hindi lyricist had a tough time in coming up with a lyric for "Van Meedhile". MSV, who used to listen to lot of Hindi songs, came up with "Chanda Tale, Muskurayen Jawaniyaan". Bhanumathi and Ramakrishna were amazed. The lyricist said that this is a good start and came up with "Hotthon Pe Aagayi, Dil Ki Kahaniyaan".
Senthamizh Naattu Solaiyile from Sugam Enge: VR had just contracted to Modern theaters. Modern theaters had the practice of asking MDs to copy Hindi tunes. VR were against this practice. Kannadasan recommended that these two should be allowed to have some leeway.
The director (whats his name?) was asked to come and approve tunes VR had come up with. The director said "I dont know music. We dont hv L board MDs. Whether I like the tune or not is immaterial. If they like it, it is enough. From the tune, and lyric, I will get a visual." Sung by KR Ramasami and Jikki.
Sokka Potta Nawabu from Gulebagavali: When the tune for this song was composed, Chandrababu protested. He said that he cant dance to this beat. MSV immediately got up and danced a few steps and said "This is the dance." Then Chandrababu and MSV became very close friends.
Lol Lol Lol Macchan Unnaip Paathu from Pasa valai: VR recorded a very different song for this situation. I dont remember the words, but it is a slightly slower tune and has more literary words. Sort of a highbrowish song. They were quite happy with what they did and expected that highbrowish sogn to be a big hit. As they were about to leave, TR Sundaram, the legendary boss of Modern theaters called them to his office. He said "I dont have a Padmini or Anjali Devi or Bhanumathi singing this song. Such a highbrowish song would suit them. I have an ordinary new face here. You need to change the song in such a way that the actress becomes popular because of this song." VR went back, found Pattukkottai, who was the lyricist and asked him to change the lyrics. PK was unwilling. PK always felt bad about writinglyrics for producers who cant recognize good tamil but felt free to ask the lyricists to change it. Then MSV said "Say something like Macchan Unnai Paatthu Mayangip Ponen Netthu". PK said "all right, thats the pallavi" and wrote a new lyric. VR added a "Lol Lol Lol" and the song became a huge hit. The actress was known as Lol Lol Rajamani.
More stories later. Nov, can you fill up too, please?
