MSV, IR and ARR love to sing a song whenever they get an oppurtunity. As a singer too they are one of a kind. It will be good to analyse their strengths and weaknesses in singing in different aspects..high pitch, prounication, melody, etc.,
Hope we do an objective exercise and don't take the normal AR-IRR war here too..

pitch song enrale vichu.
when it comes to pronunciation, MSV and IR are thousand light years farer from ARR.
IRs base voice songs are no match.
Among all three, ARRs voice is very soft unlike MSV and IR.
Best song for each of them.
MSV - Chollathaan Ninaikirean
IR - Naan Thedum Chevandthip Poovithu
ARR - Kanneere Kanneere Sandthoshak Kanneere

i think 'Sollathan ninaikiren' would have been appreciated by TMS also , the tune is so much a TMS song, still MSV did very very well..espescially in the lines 'aval varuvalo, illai mattalo'..
I think it would be the best song among all the songs sung by these 3..

i think IR is the utmost best!Only he can sing various types of songs like melodeous, sad, folk and sentimental. MSV only can sing sad and sentimentals. ARR couldn't sing sentimentals, folk and melodeous. So, IR is the best among the others. Here are the lists of the songs that popularized by IR:
SENTIMENTALS- Thenpandi cemaiyele, thayundu thanthai undu, engengo kaalgal sellum, amma endrale and hundreds more....
FOLK- ayya vedu thoranthuthan, solam vethakeyile, nethu orutara orutaru, amman koyil kilakkale anna vayal maerkale and hundreds more....
MELODEOUS- thenral vanthu teendum, valli valli ena vanthan, oru alam poovu athipoove, poomalaiye tho serava, and hundreds more....
SAD- kooda porantha, katha pole thonum, arum athu alam ille, en thayenum koyile and hundreds more....
So, I would like to conclude that no one can beat AND DEFEAT IR. He is not a homogeneous like other MDs'.

undoubtedly msv annachi. His" nee irundhaal innerathile" is beyond belief. so also sollathan ninaikiren & unakkenna kurachal. Even his jagame manthiram ( N I) for Rajni was excellent. asariri paatukku vera yaarum ninacchu kooda parkka mudiyaadhu. Kudumbam oru kadambam, aandavane kann thirandhu konjam ( Dowry kalyanam etc) IR's voice the less said the better. as i 'd commented sometime back he was just singing to prevent the fame going into his head probably. otherwise avar en paadugiraar enru enakku puriyavillai.( I know the comments I"ll get are dai vengayam, poondu, urichiduven etc but IR fans should also recognise in their hearts that what I say is true!

vengayam,
Whoever says the truth, I don't know, But you can't deny that IR as a singer has atleast 10 times more hit songs than MSV or ARR or any other MD as a singer - I hope that would tell you which MD was more recognised as a good singer by ** The Public ** !
My personal selection / countdown - IR, Bharadwaj, ARR and MSV

ARR is the better singer among the three.
ARR's voice is at ease even at higher pitches. Moreover since young and peppy numbers are what I like, I prefer ARR's (soft/young) voice to the other two.

MSV has sung the maximum songs for other music directors.Something IR and ARR would never acheive!
Passamalar-MSV-TKR(Optional)
Velli Vizha - V Kumar
Varaprasatham - Govardhan
Kadhal Mannan- Bharadwaj
Thai Moogambigai- Ilayraja
Uruvangal Maaralam - SV Ramanan
Sangamam- ARR
His voice has a haunting effect. His "Sambo" "Allah Allah " and "Sollathan Ninaikiren"i think should place him ahead of ARR and IR.IR has some good numbers but he tried to overreach and has killed many songs. For eg his own lyrics ,his own voice and music -Idhyam oru koil.. .Just find out the difference when SPB sings the same song.Similarly his version"Naanaga Naanillai" when rendered by SPB reached a different height.IR did 2 mistakes infact.
1.He sung the songs!
é.Had SPB's version too!
But as another contributor pointed out Bharadwaj has the best voice for a MD.
MSV also has another unique record. He has composed songs with other MDs as singers
Sugamana Ragangal-IR
Anbulla Athan - Sivaji Raja (This man did a very good job in Mohan-Radha starrer Katrukku Enna Veli)
Chandra Bose- aaru Pushpangal
Pava Manippu- GK Venkatesh
Kai Kodutha Deivam- JV Ragavalu

A.R.Rahman, absolutely no doubt.
A R Rahman won the MTV viewer's choice award for his song "Dil Se Re" from Dil Se.
Also, his album Vademataram is the biggest selling non-film album in India.
His "Mustafa Mustafa", "Urvasi", "Columbus" are among the top hits of the past decade.
So, he has got equal success in singing in Hindi and Tamil.

Talking about the variety in singing........
What about ARR's beautiful Qawwali number "Piya Haji Ali" from Fiza.
I read somewhere that its one of Hrithik Roshan's personal favorites.
And the latest 'Chale Chalo' from Lagaan.
The list just goes on and on.

even though i am an ardent fan of IR ....ardent is just an understatement guys!!.... the best singer amonst MD'S ..IS DEFINTELY ANY DAY ..RAHMAN... HIS "DIL SE RE" CANNOT BE PERFORMED BY ANY SINGER... I MEAN ANY!!! ..ITS OUT OF THE WORLD.... HIGH PITCHES IS HIS FEATURE.... U CAN GIVE ALL THAT TO HIS RECORDING ..BUT STILLL HE IS AMZING WHEN IT COMES TO SINGING..RAJA IS GOOD IS STILLING LIFE TO PATHOS ...THATS ALL!!

my vote is IR any day for the voice of the tamil psyche, but if MSV had sung a few more songs MSV's voice would have become as indelible as IR in people's mind. Each has amazingly unique and stirring voices that even professional singers could envy for the cutltural impact IR and MSV created brought. Whatever said, MSV and IR are two most significant voices of our modern pop culture in all "senses". But, I wish MSV could've sung more songs.

but i guess if u go outta the choice of these 3 mds, i would give my vote to Shankar Mahadevan(he is now an md isnt he?) ;-)

Should there be any doubts?? ARR, of course!!
He was the one who could out-beat all pop-singers in India - in producing the No. 1 selling "Vande Mataram" - a feat that IR, MSV or whoever it is couldn't achieve!
His Sandhosha Kanneerey, Mustafa, Columbus, etc. are some examples to prove ARR's the best.
What more, ARR has even sung a song with MJ - the king of pop!

In my opinion the best singer - MD is SPB, considering the fact that he has scored music for some movies like "Sigaram". Next comes ARR. Then MSV. IR in my opinion the worst MD to sing. Even worser than deva...Deva atleast has a voice that will suit a rickshaw wallah or an auto driver.... But IMO, IR's voice did not suit any actor till date...I couldn't control my laugh seeing many writing here in this forum as IR the best MD-singer. Come on guys!!! U guys are kidding right? Taking a day off...chilling out...Right??? Right???
Just take the song "Punnagayil Minsaaram" From the movie "barathan". What a beautiful song!!! U can clearly see IR struggling to sing the song right from the first line. To me that song was like a lesson...SJ showing how one should sing and IR showing how one should not sing!!! Do u guys want some more examples???
P.S: Can u guys please tell me which song did MD bharathwaj sang??? I have no clue...

Good Heart,
I couldn't agree more. It totally slipped outta my mind that SPB has also done music direction. Going by that SPB comes first - then, it's ARR.
Another example of a spoiled song from IR is "Yennai thaalaatta varuvaalo"

Many = not necessarily good.
good pronunciation = not necessarily good singer.
Best singer among three = undoubtedly ARR

my choice is MSV.
" ithu raja gopura deepam aghal vilakkala "- MSV +SPB
" paalirukkum, pazhamirukkum pasi irukkathu" - MSV + PS ( humming by MSV)
