I think Raaja is perhaps the only composer to have composed very apt songs for humorous situations. Earliest examples are: Vangonna (Badrakali) and Engengum Kandenamma (Ullasa Paravaigal. The list is really long and just how easy is it for anyone to composer for humor will tell us something more about the enigma of IR.
Here again, I can't think of any composer who displayed this side of human nature in music.

nithin,
i made the same point a long time back in a thread on IR's BGM scores. i think his ability to enhance the "funniness" of a scene is another testimony to his genius, and of course, we cannot ignore his songs in this realm. one of the best comedies ever made in tamil film, indru poi naalai vaa, had fantastic BGM that blended perfectly with the film's nature. there are quite a few scenes without any dialogue, only the BGM speaks. i'm sure there are other such scores, but i can't recollect any off the cuff.
onre of my favourite light songs is vengaya saambarum (panneer pushpangal).

Shankar Ganesh did fine in this category:
-Pournami Neram Paavai Oruththi
-Aalaanaalum Aalu
-Vaa Machchaan Vaa
MSV and KVM must have dozens dating back to 60s and 50s. Pretty much every A.L. Raghavan, Chandrababu song had humor. Comedians used to sing many songs regularly in old movies. N.S. Krishnan has many humorous ones, they probably don't play them on the radio these days.
ARR has:
-Oorvasi
-Strawberry Kannae
IR has his share in humor but "he didn't start the fire."

2.Kaasikku pOgum sanyaasi - Chandrodayam
3.varavu YettaNa selavu pathaNa - Bama Vijayam
4.piLLayaaru koyilukku - Baga pirivinai
Though there are songs sung by NSK in the 40's, I have listed the above because you gave everything from the western upbeat type(1) to classical (2) and folk(4). I am glad that none of you said that IR was the first composer in Tamil.

Some of the songs with tinge of humor by other MDS
ShankaR ganesh:(One of his best)
1. Pattukotta Ammalu (Ranga -- SPB & MV in their best form)
VKumar:
1. Aduthathu Ambujaththa (Infact all early KB films used to have such songs)
KVM
1. Mama Mama Mama (Kumudham -- one of the best of JPC)
MSV (had plenty, but this one is my favorite)
1. Jambulingame Jada Jada (Kasedhan Kadavulada)
As Udhaya said, till Surulirajan's time(80/81), the comedian always had one song in the film.
After that the trend has died slowly.

Sriram
Thanks for letting me know Pillaiyaru kovilikku
pozhudu soozha is from B.Pirivinai. I see the
origins of 'Tirupachi arivalu' charanam's
inspiration in that song's pallavi. Shashi said it reminds 'malarndum malaradha'. Well, we are
talking about our subjective impressions!
Here are a few more attempts at Humor:
Ilayaraja:
Barla Barla - EI mayam
Maamaavukku kuduma - Pmannan
Aatukutti muttaiyittu
aaha vandhirichu
muthan muthalaaga kaadhal duet
In many of these, I am not sure if
music by itself expresses humor.
ARR
Kaththirikka - duet
MSV
enna kobam sollu bama
There is also an old song 'iddiliyae yaen
ilaithu ponai, nee enthappayal meedhu kaadal
anai' anyone recollects the pallavi/context?

cram an rjay got the theme in perspective. I meant to say that IR's comedy songs simply made you laugh because of the element of jocularity inherent in the tune itself. i don't see that in most of the songs listed here of the other composers.
songs like barla barla, yengengum kandenamma simply gives me mirth and laughter.

Maybe you should have called this thread "Ilayaraja--perhaps the only composer to compose my kind of humor" since humor is subjective. The songs I listed make me laugh.

csg,
Perhaps cram can teach you some of his manners and skills of observation too. If this thread is titled, "IR's humorous compositions", you wouldn't see posts about other MDs. But the title, "Ilayaraaja - perhaps the only composer to compose for humor" begs proof otherwise.
