  I dont know how many 0f u read the interview but im really surprised to see the amount of freedom ARR gives to his singers. EVen Unnik once commented on this and said that he can sing anyway he likes without much interference from ARR.
  Thats why i guess ARR always gets the best from
  good singers

  I once read a Sujatha interview in which she ranks the MDs by the freedom they give to singers - 1)dEvA; 2) ARR; 3) IR.
  dEvA neenga eppadi vEna padungannu solliduvaaraam. :-). ARR will give them a rough outline but will give them freedom to improvise. IR knows what he wants exactly and you have to deliver that.

  IF what Sujatha says is true then i will say Chitra is a very talented singer. Chitra Deva musicil sammaiyaaga kalakkugiraar. Listen to her songs in 'Mahaan','kalki' or ninaithen vandhai..yappa really pleasant

  BS I havent listened to the second stanza yet:))
  But Sometimes VM gives such surprises. Do you remember the 'vizhiyil vizhundhu'(alaigal oyvadhillai)song??Andha situation BRkku suddenaaga thondra VMkku outdoor shootingilirundhu phone seidhu kettullaar. VM phoneliye lyrics solla adhai tape seidhu udanae IRkku anuppa . IR Janaki,Shailaja,PS ellariayum koppitturkkar bUt no one was available.BSS mathram dhan mattirkkanga so avangalukku adichadhu adhirshtam.
  The whole song was done in just 2 hrs time.Annikke

  autobiography, Indha NootrANdum Naanum
  yesterday. There are a number of tit-bits there

  i find it difficult that rahman is able to get the best out of classical singers because he gives them so much leeway. recently, i had an occassion to interact with some cine musicians who mentioned that rahman would keep somebody waiting for ages just for him to get the right piece and then insist that it be delivered in the same manner.
  
  i have reason to believe that spb, janaki, kjj and chithra sound more free when they sing for ilayaraja than for rehman. i have not heard many unnikrishnan's songs but the ones that i have heard do not do justice to his capabilities (including ennavale)

  Bhaskar yes Anuvukku kalyanam aagivittadhu. In fact i met the pair on my way to Bombay and we had a very nice chat. Anu was a very outgoing person and was very excited abt the popularity of 'nalam nalam ariya'.Sriram spoke less but was very appreciative of his wifes performance.

  Dev, you are right! My wife's friend's father-in-law teaches "Mridhangam" in Wesleyan University in Connecticut and Anu went to that school for her Masters. We met Anuradha in Connecticut a few years ago when we went to visit our friends. She looked so plain, I couldn't believe she has had so much talent. In fact, I was making fun of her at that time. I believe she mentioned that her Master's thesis was on "Ilayaraja" or at least some kind of research project she had done on Ilayaraja.
