Lagaan has been unanimously chosen as India's entry for Oscars Foreign Film Category for 2002. It beat Monsoon Weddings and Asoka. Though this is not the first ARR movie to be chosen, with Jeans selected in 98, this is definitely a more credible choice.
Will this mark a new beginning or open up newer horizons for ARR? As ALW's Bombay Dreams is more a Broadway production, this may introduce ARR to Hollywood in a big way. Or will Lagaan just find itself piled in the garbage can, following the very first round of selections, as all past Indian entries have?

I guess that should temporarily suspend Mira Nair's accusations.

""The Hindi blockbuster Lagaan has made it to the list of top eight films for this year's prestigious Oscar Awards, the film's director cum producer Aamir Khan said here on Friday.
"Lagaan was officially screened for the jury on January 27 and the feedback we have is that it has made among the top eight films and has been highly appreciated," Khan told reporters at the launch of a comic book based on the film.
"All our efforts have paid as the film has gone down well", he said and thanked the director Ashutosh Gowarikar for teaming up with him during the campaign in the US""
So at least Lagaan didn't get shut down within first 20 minutes as feared, despite its length.

However, apart from the Best Foreign Film category, Lagaan is vying for the golden statuette in 12 other sections. These are the Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Sound Design, Best Costume, Best Editing, and the Best Original Screenplay. ‘‘And it deserves to win in some of these categories which are of remarkable quality,’’ says Komal Nahta of a trade guide.
Does that mean that music of lagaan is not Oscar worthy? If that is the case, are we discussing something wrong?

The 5 nominations for Oscar in foreign film category being:
AMÉLIE
ELLING
LAGAAN
NO MAN'S LAND
SON OF THE BRIDE
This is what the official oscar site sez about lagaan:
FILM SYNOPSIS
When an Indian community complains to its local British official
about the excessive tax, or "lagaan," they are being charged, the
official challenges the local people to a cricket match. If they can
win the match, the lagaan will be dropped for three years; if they
lose, however, they must pay triple.
ACADEMY AWARDS HISTORY
This is the third Academy Award nomination for India. Previous
nominations were:
SALAAM BOMBAY! (1988) -- Nominee, Foreign Language Film
MOTHER INDIA (1957) -- Nominee, Foreign Language Film
Too bad that there is no award in the category of "Best Music in a Foreign Language Film" :o(

btw, Lagaan & the other 4 movies beat 46 other countries for the Nominees List, the largest number of films ever entered for the competition. For the other submitted films, visit:
http://www.oscars.org/press/pressreleases/01.11.19.html
There have been many queries regarding Lagaan getting nominated for other categories. A foreign film is eligible for submission for most other categories, provided it satisfies the terms & conditions for those categories as well.
An excerpt from the link given above:
""Five films have won both the Foreign Language Film Oscar and another award as well: 1998's winner, "Life Is Beautiful," also received the best actor award for its star, Roberto Benigni and the music award for Best Original Dramatic Score; the 1963 winner, "81/2," also won an Oscar for Best Costume Design; "A Man and a Woman" (1966) also won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar; and "Z," in 1969, also won for Film Editing. "Fanny and Alexander" (1983) won Oscars for Costume Design, Cinematography and Art Direction.""
and last year's best foreign film winner, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" also won the Achievement in music (Original score) award.
So as you can see, winning in other categories is not a regular occurence.
As you can see from Rajesh' post, Lagaan had been submitted for 12 different categories, but made it for the most important one. :-) But I always thought that it was jus a marketing strategy to get Lagaan noticed, more than anything else.
However, you have to admit that getting this far is indeed a big deal (after 14 years).
And this is a "pucca-Indian film" (courtesy of Trend) which stretches for 3hours40minutes or something, complete with unpruned song sequences :-) (when Hey Ram was submitted last year, the songs were removed for the Oscar viewing).
>>>Does that mean that music of lagaan is not Oscar worthy? If that is the case, are we discussing something wrong?<<<<
Rajesh, I wudn't say that at all.
In the eyes of a western audience, Lagaan is a musical and hence, ARR's role is strikingly obvious irrespective of specific nominations for music.
I wud say it is a time for all tfm fans to join hands in celebration. :-)
[don't ask me why tfm again]

I doubt very much it'll be some part of a song tho. :-)

i wud expect the "lagaan 11" scene...where these guys give a defiant look at the english captain when their team is complete (the score there is the chorus that comes in the lagaan theme)...that gives the essence of the movie, doesn't it ?

Ameer is clever He would give the clipping where the English Lady is coaching the villagers for the match event....Long shots with apt BGM by ARR.
