If you want sub-standard masala movies, go watch a Rajni starrer or a HIndi movie. Only these are suitable for you.

Why those treads about Kamal ? He had made some beautiful movies !!! I am not a fan of him, but i have to say that he is a very good actor !!
Thenali, Mahanadi and Hey Ram are really good !! Not "booooring" as you are saying !!
I haven't seen alavanthan, but i am sure that i will like it !
Bored to see movies like "padayappa", anna-thambikal paasam in a village context, love affairs, etc !!

haha! i agree with sedhu!
when hey ram came out, some of my frens were complaining that it was quite boring or plain.
I just told them this, "Its for a thinking man."
And they kept quiet after that.

I am not really surprised about the response in this forum. Almost 95% Tamil people say the film is really boring and there is no real story line.
I agree with ambleen, alavanthan is for thinking man. It is a great movie.
Why it is hard for us to accept change?
Why do we always look for film, that tell the same old story again and again.
"Boy meet girl"
"Boy lose girl"
"Boy marry the girl"
Why Tamil films always have to be two friends after one girl or parents are against the love?
Once I went to see an English film with a friend.
If I can remember clearly the name of the film is "scent of women."(Funny, there is hardly any major female character in the movie. Maybe thats why the film won the nomination for best film and the best actor of the year). I asked my friend, how come there is hardly any good Tamil movie and he told me they will get there. It is matter of time.
I guess he was wrong. Most, mid-time Tamil films are much better than what we see today in Tamil media.
What flaw did you find in alavanthan.
Don’t just say the film is boring, but explain why you think it is boring?
I think it is a great movie. However, kamal has tried to copy lots of ideas from English film. Such as jumping from the building (US-MARSALLS), writing poems on the wall with blood (SEVEN).
Finally, someone wants to make a different in Tamil film industry and all we do is complain.
I don’t know. Maybe alavanthan is really boring and badly done film, how can millions of people be wrong and I am the one who is seeing things differently from what is normal.

i agree 100% with u rumi!
and what ambleen said is also right, 'for a thinking man'...
u could also say 'film for the classes, not for the masses'...u know this is why i never hear to any comments from friends or anyone else who say 'ahh...this film is terrible! don't waste ur money on it!'...if i had heard to this then i would have missed a lot of my today's favourite films...never judge a film hearing to comments of others...
it's the same i was trying to say in another alavandhan-bashing thread. people find it so difficult to accept changes...they stick to their old story patterns...
i haven't seen alavandhan and don't know if the film is good or not...but i do have a lot of respect for artists like kamal who experiment (hehe, just as ARR on the music side) and who try to be different from mainstream...but, if all these experiments results in something good is another question.
but i think the main reason for people not liking alavandhan is also the factor kamal hassan, whom many respect, but on the other side also hate. it's a kind of hate-love. someone pointed out kamal's narcissism... he is always in the middle of everything in his films...he is the main guy and everyone else is only there to support him...but at the end everyone should watch him, only him, his genius...and this is where many people don't like him, and where they can't handle with kamal.

He may be Genius Actor . as story teller or writer he is coming with Weierd themes..Earlier Heyram now Alavandan....Tenali was tolerable where K.S.Ravikumar controlled him by using him more for duets and extracting comedy acting from Jayaram...
Kamalhaasan always goes on EGO TRIPS WITH EXCESS BAGGAGE....OUT COME...3 Reels of Maruthanayagam and 2 super flops Heyram and Alavandan
In HEY RAM....All versions put together Bharat Shah and Kamal lost 18 crores
In Alavandan and Abhay together Dhanu will loose 8 TO 10 CRORES.....HOPE Mauli puts Speed breaker for Kamal in Pammal.....TNS

"Such as jumping from the building (US-MARSALLS), writing poems on the wall with blood (SEVEN)"
These have already been done in Tamil movies long before these English movies you mentioned.
See 'sivappu rojakkal' for example.
Shame on Kamal for coming out with another good movie to cater to a dumb audience.
For gods sake, a guy here actually said 'kaki sattai' is better than Hey Ram.
And he is an 'educated' fellow. God save the uneducated masses in India.

ALavandan....
General public comments : "iooooooo thangalada sami.."
Average kamal fans comment: 1st half was ok, second half maha waste.
Harcore kamal fans comment: need a special extra "caliberated" IQ to understand the movie. generally Tamilians dont have it.,

"need a special extra "caliberated" IQ to understand the movie."
How much is that? Above 150?
If Kamal thinks that merely doing a different kind of film from the run-of-the-mill movies is a intelligent movie and his fans accept that then they may be in trouble in his next films.
Anyway how is this film intelligent? Is being different a form of intelligence?Constructing a collage of scenes(incl. technical wizardry) from Hollywood films is surely a mark of genius!
BTW, my IQ is below 50.

I don't think that the tamil audience is that dumb or not ready for change. Just tat even the greatest ideas need to brought across to the common man effectively. Maybe tho the story may be profound and thought provoking, the direction needs to be effective.
Like i really liked Hey Ram, but I knew others who were by no means dumb, who lost the plot and left wondering where Gandhi was during most of the movie as they thought it had more to do wit Gandhi. Not to mention, they could not follow the multilingual dialogues.

Mudhalvan was an example of effective direction in making a ridiculous storyline convincing and easily understood by anyone.

I thought you were trying to say Kamal's (most of them)movies are thought provoking and profound but doesn't get across to people only b'cos the direction is not effective. But as you said I misunderstood you.

Wowaa....Guyz..I'm not Indian-Tamil or whatever u guyz call it but I'm originally from Sri Lanka however residing in Canada for a long period of time.
Trust me, the response to Alavanthan doesn't seem to be any better than how you mentioned it.
I'm like soo eagerly waiting to see it because I heard things like its quite similar to the Famous Silence of the Lambs?
Also, schizophrenia is a topic that is quite interesting and makes a terrific plot to a story...
Hmmm...So, don't try to categorize as 'Tamils' being well..."generally Tamilians dont have it."
This applies to everyone...Take for example 'lord of the rings' thats coming out...Some ppl are just stumped at why anyone would want to make a movie like that...While others are eagerly waiting to indulge in every minute of it. And this is coming from non-tamilans..i'm talking europeans, chinese, etc..
So, this whole concept of liking a movie depends on the individual..if they are open to new concepts...or if they like movies dealing with pscyopaths..etc.
Whoops..I wrote a lot..sorry..hope I didn't bore ya!!
Lo siento amigos!

arochordidae,
who thinks 'why anyone would want to make a movie like lord of the rings'? i thought this book of tolkien has been accepted as a masterpiece long, long ago and that everyone is eager to see the movie...so who is not? (by the way, i'm just on the last bunch of pages of this book, damn cool book i must say, story in a whole is somewhat similiar to star wars minus future aspects and special effects. the old story of good against bad.)

True, so is killing. but the point is how you kill. If you go see the movie "US-Marshall’s" kamal has copied exactly what Wesley Snipes did, tie his legs to the rope lifts his hands in the air like a bird and then looks back at Tommy lee Jones before he jump.
Yes there are movies in Tamil messages are left behind on the wall, but usually asking for millions of rupees or taking revenge on gang of people who raped and killed his sister or wife and the hero is after them.
2 decades ago the film "2001 a space odyssey" written by Arthur C. Clarke was released there is hardly anyone there to see it and they didn’t make lot of money out of it, but it was one of the films in history that told mankind, that it is possible to go and build a space station up in the sky.
Once I read an interview kamal gave to an very popular tamil magazine. When the questioner asked him, why we don’t try to be different and make movies that are good as English.
Kamal replied “Indian always prefers nattu saraku (Indian wine).
I am looking forward to the day When Indian films are played in European and North American theaters. Something, Chinese has done from early 70s with famous kung-fu films and today’s Crouching tiger, Hidden Dragon.
ehy "sarithaan pongada " pls dont reply back saying there are indian flims been played in western theaters. :)

Trust me..raycas..there ARE ppl who think that 'lord of the rings' will be a bore..I dont know why but there are ...
Then again..I go back to the matter of preference...Some ppl are not into that particular genre so their idea of wicked might be Harry Potter (i'm not berating the damn movie cos its box office money is like wooowww!!)
Anywayyyzzzz.....thats all I can say at the moment regarding that.
"Indian always prefers nattu saraku (Indian wine). "
That is crap...I think what u INdians are missing is some strong patriotism..I've noticed u guyz like to degrate urself and compare to the westerners...hmmm..well..this is not a fact...i'm just saying in general this is what i've noticed (so don't start bashing out on this comment! :)
Dont put urself down like this..If everyone unites..improvement is bound to happen. I mean, u guyz must admit, TFM has sure made some leaps over the past decades!
Okay.
Hasta luego.!
