  TFM - Hall of Fame
  
  This is obviously inspired by Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. I hope at the end of this discussion this will be a permanant list.
  
  Let us create a TFM - Hall of Fame. The idea is to induct only those who REALLY made a big difference to TFM. This should be no run-of-the-mill kalaimAmaNi award. This is no competition - no comparisons of any sort shall be made. There are obvious inclusions. If somebody feels somebody missing should be included, lets discuss the person's contributions. Similarly if somebody feels somebody included should be excluded, lets discuss that too.
  
  To begin with here is my list. There is no ranking. I have tried to arrange the names chronologically, there will surely be mistakes.

  Music directors:
  Frankly, I hv never heard a song by CR Subbaraman, SV Venkatraman etc. I hv heard some songs by TR Pappa but not enough to make a recommendation. But I definitely know that Sudarsanam has been missed. AMR, MBS, Adhi Narayana Rao, S. Rajeswara Rao, TG Lingappa may be disqualified because their output is low. But if quality is the criterion, all of them would definitely come in. There can be no question about AMR at least.
  
  Similarly V. Kumar and Vedha are people who need to be discussed.
  
  Among the male singers, NSK, CSJ, TL, Chandrababu are shoo-ins. SC Krishnan, JC, Mano need to be discussed. If quality is the only issue, Balamurali is another shoo-in.
  
  Among the female singers, Manorama and P. Leela are shoo-ins.
  
  Among the lyricists, Bharathi whose lyrics hv provided a great pool of songs, should be included.

  Quality is a necessary condition but not sufficient. I don't know what you mean by shoo-ins; I assume that you mean that they are automatic qualify for the HOF.
  
  Jayachandran just about makes it to HOF (IMO) but Mano is way off. Also Manorama is a definite no-no. About NSK and JPC (Chandrababu) I am not so sure. I enjoy their songs very much and they may just make it bcos they are unique singers.
  
  BTW in Rock 'n' Roll HOF, some of my fav groups Dire Straits, Jethrotull don't make it! :-(

  All the vEdhA songs I know I think are copies of Hindi songs. VKumar was very much limited to KB movies. For these reasons I think they don't make it to HOF.

  As long as u don't have Deva in HOF , I am fine !!
  
  On a similar note , the picture in the opening page of TFM , with Deva's picture along with chota MD's like MSV , IR etc.. is sickening .
  
  Deva deserves a special page . Don't insult him by putting him aside MSV , IR etc ;-)

  I am not 'considering' anybody. This is a open discussion. We need to discuss the less famous persons before we can add to HOF.
  
  About Ghantasala and ALRaghavan I am not sure. I feel they don't have a place in HOF. Likewise about Mano - my feeling about him is after about 10 years he is still a poor man's SPB.

  Sudarsanam: I dont know whether we need a discussion on Sudarsanam. Pl. refer to the other thread, "Sudarsanam the MD". He has produced enough great songs ( quantity + quality ).
  
  AMR: The problem with AMR is that after Kalayanap Parisu and Thenilavu he didnt get the chance to be the MD for a lot of movies. Quality, yes but quantity ?? I hv no idea. Some old songs enthuasist should clarify this.
  
  MBS: On the basis of Padhai Theriyudhu Paar, he deserves consideration. But I dont even know whether he did music for any other movie.
  
  Adhi Narayana Rao, Ghantasala, Rajeswara Rao etc.: All these telugu MDs made sporadic appearances in Tamil movies. Quality is quite high ( Maya Bazar, Missiamma, Kanavane Kan Kanda Deivam, Patala Bhairavi, Manidhan Maravillai, Kadan Vangi Kalyanam... ) but quantity ??
  
  TG Lingappa: Manisekaran has provided some info on TG Lingappa in the thread "Puttham Pudhu Pazhasugal".
  
  V Kumar: We cant dismiss a guy because he was identified with one director, producer, whatever. Sudarsanam did music mostly for AVM movies. So what ?
  
  Kunnakkudi: Similar argument as of V. Kumar. He mostly worked with APN.
  
  Vedha: I too think that Vedha is the precursor of Sankar Ganesh and Deva. But he has produced several original good numbers. ( Adhey Kangal, Parthiban Kanavu ). He needs to be discussed.
  
  
  Manorama: She is a no-no ? Why ? She has sung lot of songs that are very enjoyable.
  
  JBC, NSK: Why wouldnt they make it when their songs are enjoyable ?

  JBC and NSK deserve more consideration than Manorama since their styles were distinctive while Manorama doesn't apporach their originality or quantity.

  My criteria for inducting a person to TFM-Hall of Fame
  
  1. Any winner of a national/international award (for TFM) is automatically inducted.
  2. Quality is a necessary condition but not sufficient : the person should have a reasonable corpus of work in his field - for example IR cannot qualify for a lyricist induction.
  3. The person should have contributed something REALLY meaningful to TFM that people will remember him/her after say 50 years from the time the person effectively stopped working.
  4. A person's work being enjoyable is not sufficient to being inducted.
  5. The person's work should have been consistently good for a reasonable period of time.
  
  These criteria are only guidelines; if anybody feels there the above should be changed, they are welcome to debate it. This should be an exclusive Hall - this should not be like TN Govt's Kalaimamani award (anybody with 5 years in the industry gets the award !).
  
  By the above criteria here is my revised (incomplete) list :

  K.V.Mahadevan - first MD to win a national award for kandhan karuNai
  MSV-TKR
  M.S.Viswanathan
  Ilaiyaraja

  IMO those who do not make it : Shankar-Ganesh, Chandrabose, Gangai Amaran, Manoj-Gyan, Vedha, Deva, VKumar. All of them have given good songs, even great songs but not consistently or in sufficient numbers.
  
  To be discussed :
  
  Papanasam Sivan - as a MD he scored for many of MKT's superhit songs, right ?
  T.K.Ramamoorthy - as a solo MD
  T.G.Lingappa
  A.M.Raja
  Chalapathi Rao
  and
  T.Rajendar
  
  and others.
  
  People who have mentioned them in pervious posts, please give examples - like films, songs, awards etc. This will ensure that their achievements will be remembered. Will also be useful to make a write-up on them later. Please do not just ask me a question and forget about it. I do not know enough about everybody. So please say why you want them inducted !

  I am a hard-core IR-fan but I am not sure IR should be included a a HOF-Male singer. IMHO, quite not.

  Too early to say : all active singers like Unnikrishnan, Hariharan etc.

  Too early :Swarnalatha, Sujatha and other currently active singers.
  
  Many of them not included in HOF have made contributions to TFM. I enjoy many of Gangai Amaran's songs and Sunandha is one of my favourite singers but IMO the contributions of those who were not inducted are not sufficient. This is not to undermine any of their contributions. And when I say TO BE DISCUSSED only means that I do not know enough about them to include/exclude them.

  pg: The idea to post the criteria is very good. BWe all assume so many things and hence the possibility of misunderstanding is ever present.
  
  There is one debatable issue here.
  How many of us can name 5 songs by Dandapani Desikar, PUC, SGK, KBS etc. ? TRM, yes, MKT, yes but SGK ? The only song I hv heard about - not heard - is "Kaayaadha Kanagatthe". For all these people, filmdom isnt the way to fame, but stage. Would they qualify if an acceptable corpus of songs/movies is a criteria ? Or we bowing to the traditional perceptions here ? Mind you, traditional perception are important; but it we are giving weightage to that, we should state it in the critireia.
  
  
  
  
  Now coming back to nomination/non-nominations etc.
  
  MDS: Sudarasanam. Too much trouble to state the work espy. when there is another active thread open. But if you want to, I will cut/paste from there.
