Udit Narayan was adjudged the Best Male Singer for his Chhote Chhote Sapne song in Hindi film Zindagi Khoobsurat Hai.
The south Indian film industry too had its moments of glory. A R Rahman song and background score in Tamil film Kannathil Muthamittal fetched him the award for Best Music Direction. Vairamuthu bagged the Best Lyric Writer award for the same film. The jury said Rahman’s number rose "above the conventions of film songs to reach the realms of poetry".

Congratulations to A R Rahman! 4 National awards in just 10-11 years. It is simply phenomenal.
I am not happy with the national award for female singers - it should have gone to Sudha Raghunathan for Ivann (any of the 3 songs) or Kavita for "Kaahe chhed chhed mohe" in Devdas. Shreya sang well, but it was not National award material.

This is ARR's back to back win after Lagaan for 2001. Previous wins:
1992 Roja
1997 Minsara Kanavu
2001 Lagaan
2002 KM
I guess films like Run and Gemini have to be satisfied by the fact that they are commercial music and sold more CDs and tapes compared to KM. Honestly, I think KM is the weakest combo between Manirathnam and ARR. This win makes up for the failure of the jury to award best music for Dil Se in 1998. For me, ARR's best score so far is Dil Se...

KM did not win the best film (maybe regional film). Anyway the jury's logic is crazy, the current jury just seems to be obsessed with ARR. You can't seriously think that it woke up after a long slumber and is recognising good music. IMHO it is just going by ARR's past reputation and the fact that KM was a socio-political film which has won accolades outside India. It's a good album, but definitely one among many others that year.
But anyways ARR's fans can enjoy this moment along with the success of Boys.

Oru dheyvam thandha poovae was a great song ...
ARR deserves it.
But let me tell u that
Kannathil muthamittaal 's BGM was the worst of ARR-Maniratnam combo.
there is no life at all in the BGM.
even in scenes where some soulful BGM was required , the bgm work was plain and dumb.
i really wonder ARR has given BGM for that movie.
if u watch the movie again , you will realise how much i am right..

I don't think IR Would be seriously thinking about awards. He didn't get national award till sindhu bairavi. He had given gems before that film. So with films like manasellam, ramana he won't be expecting anything. And yes, these awards should be more joyful to thukkadas and not to raja!

rajeshrs..
I'd want to disagree w/ u on the BGM part. KM had some beautiful soul stirring bits. Especially where a girl (Madhumita, i think) does an altered rendition of the title song. More of a wail. The scene was shot quite beautifully, the bgm actually added to the tragic(!) touch.
And technically speaking, Velai Pookal and Senjore must have been the most prominent bgm ever! :)

KM had one of the best BGM scores of Indian Cinema. I am sure ARR won the award more for BGM score than for songs.

Kannthil Muthamittal, is playing here in Wellington in New Zealand, for the film festival, this is the second TAmil film that has been chosen for the festival, the first being "The Terrorist".
KM (A peck on the cheek) recieved an amazing review with special mention for the songs and the BGM, I'll find and online link to the review, this is the 3rd screening and hardly any Tamilians at the screening of the film.

maddy you confirmed nut, you are nothing but a trouble make. Why the hell did you bring IR into this thread in the first place.
It is the same "elite" panel which gave national award to minsara kanavu when a movie like shankarabharanam did not win national award. so we know how "elite" this panel is.

srina,
Sivaji did not get a national award but Major Sundararajan did....Nagesh did not get a national award....Sivaji did not get Bharath Ratna, but MGR did....
that is why i said not all those who deserve get the award....the statement of AwardsSuck suggested that those who get the award don't deserve it...which is not the case...as i said earlier, this is not a lottery...u need some stuff to prove it at the national level
Indian,
I used to post so much earlier...I did not post for a long time....correct....that was because there was hardly any thread where there was a decent exchange of words...i did not want to be a part of that.....so i post msgs very rarely(i guess just 2 msgs in the Parasuram thread)....even in the BOYS thread i haven't posted much(despite it being a hit)....it is not a case of me appearing when ARR succeeds...just a case of indecent exchanges amidst which i do not prefer to exist
ARR fan,
distance sonnengana vasathi-a irukkum!
btw...curses had better things to do than worry about the discussions here....he wasnt around for many months....there's no point pulling him in here...
