This Thread is to discuss abt the MElody Queen-
P SUSHEELA.. Who is the Inspiration for may singers... I feel she's the Only singer who dominated.. Rather ruled the TFM for more than 40 yrs.. And even now her voice is Very Sweet(god's Gift)..

no doubts...introduced in 1951 for a duet with A.M.raja in the film PETTRA THAI...P.S. WAS singing sensation in TFM and singing queen in Telugu film music until 1991...for almost 40 years...But Lata mangesker got Godfathers to record her shaky voice even today where as P.S. did not get offers inspite of melodious Muthumani malai, Kannukku mai Alagu, Vannamaan Vangimaan OR ENAKKENA raassve(Manikkam)...which are all hits of mid 90s....Even today at the 50th year of her career...with latest sound technology one can work wonders with her voice...Looks like no one to come forward TFM HAS TWO PERIODS now...One before SUSEELA and another...after Suseela...TNS

I used to think that PS is the most versatile singer there is. I have argued about her virtues in many threads. But, of late, I have seen the light. I think she is a very ordinary singer who got more fame, recognition, and opportunity than she truly deserved. I frankly wish that many of her songs were rather renderd by some other better singers.

ur views but dont compare lata with here.
Lata doesnt have to equalise PS - she has surpassed everyone.
In art godfathers cant keep u in if u arent good.
And Lata is the best.Simple reason why all great
hindi music directors of the past stuck to her.
Same reason why IR hunted for a song without "z"
so that she could sing for him.
Lata defines music. Ask the greats u know and the
ones u dont know and they will tell u.
The problem is u people need to come out of the
well to make judgements.U cant compare 2 things without knowing both of them.

Let not the thread get diverted nor its importance diluted.
Not much of discussions required on facts. It is a pity that Tamil Films are not using the greats. They are depriving us. Songs of PS are being sung by particpants in various TV programmes like Saptha swarangal, music concerts by other play back singers. She is above awards and beyond comparisons. Suggest the thread discusses on the innumerable songs rendered by her.The article in Cinema Express available in TFM would tell more.

Dear readers,
I honestly feel that Lata is much better than P Suseela, though I greatly admire the latter as a singer. The reason: There was a Telugu film called 'Suvarna Sundari' in 1957 with all songs by P Suseela. There was a Hindi remake of the same film with all songs by Lata. There were totally 12-14 female songs in each movie. This gives a good and every fair comparison between Lata and Suseela. You'll realize that Lata is much better with regard to sweetness, range and speed of singing 'classical taans'. Surprisingly, the tunes are exactly same. In fact, because of the use of many Sanskrit words, the lyrics also have a great amount of similarity!!!!!!!
In fact, I had heard the Telugu version much before the Hindi version. there's no question of any bias. No wonder Lata is divine!!!!!
All this, even though Vani Jairam has so unscrupulously blamed her and Asha for 'monopoly'
when they are both a thousand times better than Vani. Sour grapes indeed!!! Vani J. will never admit that Lata had recommended her name to Ravi Shankar for the film "meera". Alas, had Lata herself sung those songs, they would have been saved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS has won 5 national awards compared 3 by Lata.
For Lata, one of the national awards is for the
movie "Lekin" which is directed by her brother. If I am right, PS has received more national awards among her contemporaries in female category. This should make things clear what PS is. The Telugu songs of Suvarna Sundari are definitely sweet and melodious. Particularly the song "Pilavakura.....". No one can beat PS when it comes to sweetness in the voice. Lata had her plus points. But, when it comes to melody, PS has
a clear advantage.

I heard the songs in suvarna sundari (tamil & hindi) and PS is far better compared to lata. This is a question of individual taste, not a collective judgment.

As for vj, the lata/asha stranglehold extended beyond vj to every other possible contender.

Lata/Asha had no stranglehold.
C'mon , these people werent any dictators with armys behind them.
When lata arrived she faced the same competition what others face.In fact she had a difficulty getting the first song But pandits of music predicted she would scale heights no one else would.And she did.

Hey guys, people dont call her Saraswati just for pleasing her.Its from heart.
U have to leave all bias and listen to her and u
will understand.(I hope u guys understand hindi first of all)

Remember she has the most number of fans.
Right from the music pandits of 1950's to the present kids. Watch Sa Re Ga Ma.
In last year's survey for most popular indian person ,she topped the list (much higher than anyone else)

As for vj,just look at how successful she has been in her own backyard.Where the hell is the question of her giving any competetion to THE LATA.vj has lot of nose element in her delivery. Fit for only certain kinds of songs.

Listen to Janakis number in Agni Nakshatram in tamil and the one by vj in the telugu version and u will understand what i mean.Janakis version just stands out great

S.D.Burman,Madan Mohan,R.D,Salil .. list is long.
These people are some of the greatest M.Ds.
The fact that she was the top priority should remove doubts from any stubborn minds.

In fact most of these directors have stated that
they composed some of the most complex but popular songs ever only because Lata was there
to sing them.

PS doesnt have the range of Lata.For that matter no indian female singer has. The scale she can reach only few others can-This is a fact.

The only competetion to Lata is her age
And it is in print that if anyone got sidelined
due to Lata's talent then it was Asha. Till Lata was in prime she was neglected by most MD's and given only certain kinds of songs.

It is impossible for any MD to have the magic of lata and use someone else.
If u were a MD would u give a great song to Mano if u had SPB's services or
would u give a great song to Unni if u have Yesudas. --- Simple logic

Again i dont want to go into any facts,u just have to listen to her and u will understand.

She has literally held a huge part of India spellbound with her magic.
The currect sort of public interest being shown in music in TFM started quite late with IR arrival.

But this sort of fan following has been there for
a long time in Hindi films - right from 60's.
And remember people just love lata right from those days - SHE IS THE VOICE OF INDIA
