Q&A: SHEKHAR KAPUR
"I'm Going To Make the Most Successful Film"
Director Shekhar Kapur on what went wrong with The Four Feathers and his next project Pani, which he says will be an international success.
Q. How do you feel about your ideas like Bombay Dreams and The Guru becoming successful?
A. I feel good. When I came to the UK as a student I noticed that everyone wanted to be English but today being Asian is cool. Those days there was a denial of culture, now there is pride.
Q. Speaking of hits and flops, what went wrong with The Four Feathers?
A. Nothing went wrong with it but it didn't meet with expectations. At the moment it has been released only in the US. It was made for only $50 million. Hopefully, we will recover about $150 million from the box office. But yes, there was a problem. The film was released after 9/11 but shot before it. People who saw it felt I was accusing the US of bombing Afghanistan. I think they should have taken a White, non-Asian director for the film. I saw it as modern history's first jehad.
Q. What next?
A. I'm going to make Mandela. I feel strongly about it. I have also decided to make the world's most successful film, Pani. Oscar-winning screenwriter Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show) is working with me on it. It is on water problems in India 60 years from now. It will have my friend A.R. Rahman's music.

Looks like Govind Nihalani is not very sure about ARR. He seems to be
in doubt when asked about ARR as MD for his latest film "Dev". I hope
ARR gets a chance to work with him. Even though he cant do the visual
justice to ARR's songs, but still his films are good and with Amitabh
and Om Puri, shall be a good platform for ARR too.
Surya
Besides the Big B and Om Puri, one more actor is under finalisation
("I haven't finalized Akshaye Khanna," Nihalani clarifies). Will A.R.
Rahman score the music in this film (Nihalani's THAKSHAK had music by
Rahman)? "I haven't decided on that either. Believe me, I have yet to
finalize things before I make a formal announcement," he laughs.

AR Rahman gets into the Pay List 2002 of Sunday Times
Vijay Dutt
London , November 03
The music director and composer AR Rahman is among the top 10 Asians who fi=
gure in the Sunday Times Pay List 2002 of 500. Between them Pay List finalis=
ts have earned £123 million more than the last year's. Their grand total of =
£3.446billion is equal to the GDP of the Congo Republic.
Regarded by Bombay Dreams producer Lord Lloyd Webber as a genius and the be=
st music composer of present times, Rahman' s earning of £2 million has put =
him into 377 slot of the total 500. This signals his rise in eminence and es=
teem in the West, although he is still at the bottom of the list of top 10 A=
sians.
The Asian list is topped by brothers Gurchait and Gurnaik Chima, 52 and 44 =
years of age who are in fashion designing business. With £9.5 million salary=
cheques they are placed at 68th position, beating Prince Charles by a long =
shot. The heir to the Throne is slotted at 85th with £7.8 million.
Chimas are followed by entrepreneur Manish Chande who with pay income of £4=
.118 million is slotted at number four among the Asians and at 179 in the ov=
erall list of 500.
Another businessman Raj Kumar is in the fifth poistion among the Asians and=
at 183th in the overall list with a salary of £4 million. He is managing di=
rector of a London tour company. He is one of the few persons who has made m=
oney out of the dot.com boom.
Raj Kumar is followed by Rana Talwar and Tom Singh at sixth and seventh in =
the 10 top Asian list and at 232th and 253rd slots in the overall list. Mr T=
alwar (£3.2 million) was until last year group chief of the Standar Chartere=
d Bank and was the first Indian to run a FTSE- 100 company.
Tom Singh, 53, is a womenswear retailer and received £2.87 million last yea=
r. He is four slots above Britain's Tennis heart-throb Tim Henman. The 8th a=
nd 9th positions in the Asian List are occupied by Ranjit Boparan and Baljin=
der Boparan with incomes of £2.76 million and £2.5 million respectively.
Ranjit, is a director of Boparan Holdings, the chicken processor, which mad=
e a profit of £12 million last year. He is slotted at 269th in the overall l=
ist.
Baljinder onws 50 per cent of the Boparan Holdings, her husband being the c=
o-owner. She is at 303rd in the list of 500.
The 500-list is topped by the store chain BHS owner Philip Green. He has ri=
sen to the billionaire status and top of the Pay List by beating Bernie Eccl=
estone of Formula One.
Another surprise is that David Beckham is one slot above the Queen with pay=
of £15.5 million, the Queen's being £15.2 million. Beckham is now the highe=
st earning footballer in Britain.
Others who are well-known in India are Madonna who tops the list of earners=
among musicians and pop stars. She is at 15th with £36 million while Sir Pa=
ul McCartney is at 16th with £35 million.
The fact that 10 Asians figure in the Pay List of 500 is a remarkable tribu=
te to the success and endeavour of the community to reach the top in every f=
ield in this country. In the List Rich too over 100 of them have appeared in=
recent years.
The compiler of the List, Philip Beresford said, " We are living in a winne=
r-takes-all economy and those who can bend a free kick, sing some pretty not=
es or fill cinema seats, are in quids as a result."

Rules of engagement: How the Rich List was compiled
Definitions and reference sources
timesonline.co.uk
1 Our accounting period for the Pay List is October 1, 2001 to
September 30, 2002. Total earnings must have been in excess of
£1.537m. This is a list of people's cash income; it is not an
assessment of their overall wealth.
2 Our definition of pay embraces all recorded salaries from quoted
and private companies of over £1.537m taken from the latest annual
reports filed at Companies House by October 12, 2002. Where no new
accounts have been filed since last year's list, we have dropped that
person, as we do not use information twice that has informed previous
lists. With private companies, where the individual directors'
salaries do not have to be disclosed, we have only identified those
people who we are confident are the highest-paid directors, normally
the largest shareholder or the founder of the business. Dividends
from shareholdings are also included in pay, and we add these to the
salary of the director concerned.
3 Share sales in quoted companies and private companies are also
included in the period from October 1, 2001, to September 30, 2002.
The information on quoted company shares has been provided by
www.hemscott.net, and we acknowledge its vital help. In the case of
share options, we count only the profits made over the same period by
directors when the options have been exercised and sold. Those
options that have yet to be exercised and other shareholdings do not
count in this list, whether granted during our accounting period or
not. They do not count as cash until they are sold.
4 In the case of company sales, whether private or quoted, we have
taken only the cash element of the proceeds in this list and ignored
the portion of the sale that involved swapping shares in one company
for those in the purchasing company. Where part of the sale fee
includes the issuing of loan notes to the seller, we have counted
those towards the total earnings, as they are easily convertible into
hard cash.
5 In the case of individuals who are known to have high earnings but
do not have a company that reflects that, we have worked on a case-by-
case basis, covering fields as diverse as general sport, football,
film, fashion, music and publishing. We have examined the evidence,
talked to people in the industries, to management companies and
sponsors, in order to get a grasp of their earnings, taking into
account royalties, endorsements and compensation payments. We have
made a realistic assessment of the diverse opinions and facts before
making our judgments. Where possible, we have based our judgment on
the most recently published accounts connected to these individuals.
Some omissions may be surprising, and we have noted the 56% change
from last
year's list. The prominent drop-outs, including last year's No 1,
Bernie Ecclestone, are revealed in Winners and Losers, below.
6 We have included the earnings of those who have parted company from
their employers in the course of the year, taking with them lump sums
and payments into their pension funds. We have added to the payoffs
any monies earned from salary, share sales, option gains and
dividends in the course of the year up to their departure.
7 We have found fewer people in the City this year (53 all told),
reflecting the effect of the stock-market slump on salaries and
bonuses. But we admit that there are a considerable number of
millionaire bonus kings in the City, even today, whom we have not yet
identified. How many are missing is known only to the individual,
their employer and the Inland Revenue. None is forthcoming. Some
billionaires are also missing, such as Sir Richard Branson and the
Barclay brothers. It is simply impossible to make an accurate
assessment of their income and they are excluded.
8 We take no account of any taxation that may be owing on salaries,
dividends or share sales in our calculations. We assume that the top
500 have taken the best tax advice to minimise their 40% liability on
earnings and capital gains on share sales, but that is, again, a
matter between the revenue and the individual concerned. The figure
shown is our estimation of the gross income earned.
9 We have included British citizens and those from overseas who live
in the United Kingdom for most of the year, or who earn the bulk of
their money in the UK. For example, Kylie Minogue, an Australian with
worldwide earnings, is included on account of her UK residency.
Madonna, an American also with global earnings, is included on
account of both her residency and marriage to Guy Ritchie, a British
national. Pierce Brosnan, on the the other hand, is excluded, despite
playing the quintessential Englishman James Bond. He doesn't live in
the UK, wasn't born here, and earns insufficient internationally to
qualify for the Irish top 25. However, a previous James Bond, Sir
Sean Connery, does qualify for the list despite living overseas, on
account of being born in the UK. Earnings in dollars have been
converted to sterling at a rate of £1 = $1.55 unless stated otherwise.
10 We have considered other assessments of earnings, including those
produced by Forbes magazine, Labour Research and the Financial Times,
and formed our judgments after conducting further research. In
identifying the top-earning lawyers, we acknowledge the help of
earnings surveys conducted by Legal Business and the Chambers and
Partners Guide to the Legal Profession.
11 National Lottery winners who have accepted publicity or who have
been identified in the media over the past year have been included.
12 Where there are references in individual profiles to other people
in the Pay List, we have cross-referred to their profile (ranking)
numbers.

A.R. Rahman: Pop Genius Bollywood Style
By Alex Mahler
For the last thirteen years, Peter Gabriel's Real World record label has been churning out album after album of global musical sounds packaged for Western audiences. The template is pretty consistent: take local pop or classical stars from their third world home and give them a Western producer, a Western backup band, and a London recording studio. The result is usually slick Western-oriented pop fused with ethnic influences which dominates Tower Records' World Music sections.
For the last sixty years, India's film industry has been producing thousands of soundtracks featuring Western-inspired Indian music. In some respects the template is the opposite of Gabriel's: take Indian-oriented pop songs and spice them with Western funk, dance, classical and R&B influences and polish them for mass consumption by the millions of obsessed Indian Film devotees. It's world music, but coming from the West to the East. To Western tastes, the sometimes kitsch, sometimes enchanting, and sometimes exotic sounds of Indian pop culture are a curious blend of East and West.
But those assuming this music is fluffy and unsophisticated entertainment with no real appeal to a Western audience need to listen to the composer A.R. Rahman. Originally from Madras, but armed with a degree in Western Classical Music from Oxford, Rahman began his career as a composer of Indian advertising jingles. His successful jingle for Leo Coffee claimed India's Jingle of the Year 1991, and caught the ear of Mani Ratnam, the Steven Spielberg of India. In his first major breakthrough, Rahman was asked take his catchy pop sense and provide a score for the blockbuster movie Roja.
The new medium immediately proved perfect for Rahman, who has gone on to create some of the most emotionally expressive and inspiring - not to mention commercially successful - music in the history of Indian cinema. A self-professed workaholic, Rahman has scored more than a hundred Hindi and Tamil film soundtracks, some of which have proven far more popular and enduring than the forgettable films that they were written for. His creative compositions, flawlessly produced with an obsessive attention to detail, have arguably revolutionized the genre.
Western attention to Rahman has grown steadily, starting with Talvin Singh, king of London's second-generation ethnic Indian music scene. Singh featured Rahman's theme from the movie Bombay on his definitive 1997 compilation CD, Anokha: Sounds from the Asian Underground. Not long thereafter the song was paired with French soccer star Zinedine Zidane to advertise Volvic's bottled mineral water in a rather ironic return to Rahman's advertising roots. More recently, Rahman collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the musical Bombay Dreams, premiering this year in London's West End. Both of these provide excellent introductions to the music of A.R. Rahman. Also, his classic film soundtracks are available on cassette for around $2 at your local Indian grocery store. Some notables include Taal, Thakshak, 1947, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna, and a recommended starting point, Dil Se.
