I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Susi: Where did you get these rare songs? Everytime I go to TN I try to ask around for who has decent collections - most of the leads are duds. The only place I haven't checked is a Mr. Ali Khan's - he is reputed to have every song since the 60s and most from the pre-60s period.

Naaz: ippadi TFM adminsa criticize pannreengale, there is a thread on "Music Director Vijayabhaskar dead" a few lines above this thread. Gavanikkave illaiyaa? The thread contains a link to the archives with a previous discussion of VB. Several of VJ/VB songs are listed.

Do anyone remember the movie "Naam Pirandtha Mann"? (Sivaji, KRVijaya, Fatafat, Kamal *ing).
There is a lullaby duet by PS and VJ. MSV is MD. Any idea about the song?

Kik -
I am sorry if what I said above sounds like a criticism. I am glad for the VB/VJ thread. What I was hoping for, however, was an official announcement/obituary in the TFM page honouring VB. Just a paragraph acknowledging his contribution and singinficance in Southern film music. I don't think that is too much to ask or expect for a site that is devoted to Tamizh Film Music, is it? It is just a sign of how much we value our own "artists" and honour them when they are gone...Kuttram sollavillai, kik, kurai solligiraen. Avvalluthaan.

Neel D - I did check the home page and saw links to The Hindu obit and another to the VB thread. I was hoping for something from the TFM page on VB. I did read the Hindu obit on the day VB passed away.
Perhaps, that is all - a borrowed paragraph - that one can expect...I am just a bit disappointed by the absence of a "fine" obituary - original and laudatory - that's all.
I am sorry I missed the VB special on Oli. Was it any good? How long did it go on for? Does Oli have a programme sheet which is put out in advance (weekly)...that would greatly help a listener like me to tune in...Neel D, do you have any info regarding this? Thanks

Naaz,
That VB special lasted one hour. I forgot the first song. I have listed all others in VB thread. Includes five songs with VJ. For some reason, I always think that VB's compositions had a feel of modernity. Even after 25 years the feeling still remains. I was glad to notice that he had also used LRE's voice very nicely as opposed to the same kind of cabaret numbers she was singing during that period.
I may not be accurate abut Oli's programme. But every other day at 10:30pm EST you can catch half hour of 70s songs. And every day between 11am and 3pm EST you can catch an hour of 70s on Oli. These are the time slots where you can usually, not always, find VB, VJ songs.

Thanks for the info, Neel D. I will do my best to tune in. I just have to calulate the time difference and make it a point to have a listen.

I was in Madras from mid jan-feb and was frustrated in not finding some of vj's old cassette collections in any of the music stores.
When I was switching channels I happened to hear vani jayaram's play back for venniradai nirmala's dance drama on Aandal kalyanam. This was telecasted on the podhigai-doordarshan's tamil channel. It was-particularly VJ's singing was excellent. Even after all these years her voice, diction seemed flawless.
Too bad no one seems to recognise VJ's talents.I wish she had sung teh patti solli song in Azhagi.

VJ has a solo in Thavam - "Sogame Vazhkaiyin Raagama?" - a tune from the hindi Bhavna (Thavam was the tamil remake) which went "Thu Kahaan Aa Gayi Zindag1". The music director for the tamil version was Pugazhendhi, and the film starred Lakshmi, and her husband Mohan.

Just heard VJs Varuvan Vadivelan - although it is genre-specific song (devotional) the scale and rendering are a challenge - and VJ manages to get the piety and dedication in each pitch. Asaathyam!

Does anyone know if VJs songs from Velichchaththukku Vaanga are available as audioclips on the net? I am yearning to listen to Natchatira Poovai Yedhuthu Maalai Thoduththu Tharattuma...a beautiful duet by VJ/PJC?
Also the song from Pozhudhu Vidinjachchu - "Kaatre Sellu Oru Kaadhal Thoodhu, Ival Yaengum Maadhu..." VJ faltering dip and rise on the word "Kaatre" is a class act. (Compare this with Kaatre yen vaasal vandhai by KS - and it is an interesting study in nuancing.)
Does anyone know of a link to the above two VJ songs? Please!

I agree with you Naaz, Natchatira Poovai and Katre Sellu are 2 gems. I love both songs.
Another Song vani with chitra is a Kanagi Mathavi song. It goes like this. Oruvanuku Oruthiyenna uravusollum. Have you heard this song before?

Naaz, Vani and chitra have sung couple of songs;
The song I mentioned was a Visu movie staring Prabhu in double role with Rekha and Madhuri but the song is for Disco Shanti and Another girl in a drame scene.
Vani and Chitra have also sung another song Ayiram Vizhigal Kondaval Maghalin Vizhigalai paradhi, Ithu Kartighai matham and Ithu Mazhai adikum neram. I dont know the movies but I have heard it.

Susi - I have not heard any of those VJ-Chitra duets you mention above. What do you think of the VJ-Chitra songs together? What are the differences in their singing styles? It would help you had the names of the movies...that might go a long way in locating these songs on the web...Hopefully, Neel D, will pipe up and give up the movie names...or will he? :~)

what do u say for this?
Rosappoo Ravikkaikaari - Vani Jayaram
Ennullil engo yaengum geetham
yaen kaetkiradhu
yaen vaattudhu
aanaal adhuvum anandham
en mana gangaiyil sangamikka
sangamikka panguvaikka
pongidum poonkugaiyil
pongidum panperum poonkugaiyil
paadhaiyilae manam ponginirkka thanginirkka
kaalam indrae vaaraadho
manjalai poosiya maegangalae
maegangalae moagangalae
malligai maalaigalae
malligai mullaiyin maalaigalae
maargazhi maadhathu kaalaigalae soalaigalae
endrum ennai koodaayo
I think IR-VJ combination at its best in this...especially, the charanam's "haa .... " bit... VJ's class extra ordinary..
another one is "Kavidhai Kaelungal" from "Punnagai Mannan"... supposed to be the first computerised song in Tamil Cinema... one more master piece from IR-VJ.

Naaz, when chitra sings with vani, I can feel the respect and shyness in her voice. I think chitra have alot of maruyathai for vani.
