The tunes are also so very ordinary.....these ARR nari-fans are singing praises still, as they have no choice but to hype up such a sub-standard music from their idol!!!
I for one, after reading the reviews truly thought that it is going to be of some standard...very disappointing!

"The tunes are also so very ordinary....."
KK, do you want to discuss this? Which tunes did not work for you? Any quick ideas why?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Mr. KK, bcoz you cant enjoy a song doesnt mean the tunes are ordinary. It is bcoz of your ignorance.
i.e. it is like complaining you dont feel a pleasent scent while the actual reason is that you have cold :)

perfect review from mouthshut......i watched it 1stday 1stshow.....it was a gr8 movie......SRK's masterpiece......all ppl. who feel ARR doesen't know BGM pls watch this movie.....his BGM has given 60% to the movie and ashutosh is too good a director to fill the other 40% easily.......as usual bollywood will reject it like any other message movie......but for me it is better than Lagaan as it had more emotional touch in it.......hey all u NRI's just watch this movie and if u dunt get tears in ur eyes then u r egyptian mummies.....very touching....

I liked the "aayo re" background music when SRK arrives in India. It has an African feel, but it fits with the scene.

The 2nd stanza of Kaveriya has some good amount of resemblance to the starting of the song Kal Ho Na Ho (something like "Har Ghali Badal Rahi He") from Kal Ho Na Ho.

desam is mainly old wine in a new bottle. Most tunes are based on older songs, some from his own work (Bombay). The saving grace is 'undhan .." by the wizkid himself, if I can get over the continuous shouting in the background..Looks like I need to change my nick :-)

Swades
Teenstation Rating: 3.5 / 5
By Indu Mirani
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Gayatri Joshi, Makrand Deshpande, Lekh Tandon, Raja Awasthi, Kishori Balal, Farooque Jafar
Producer: Ashutosh Gowarikar
Director: Ashutosh Gowarikar
Music: A.R. Rahman
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
The toughest film for any director to make is his follow up to a cult film. And when that film is Lagaan, the job becomes that much more difficult. The good news then, is that Ashotosh Gowariker with Swades – We, The People has in a different way, equalled his earlier film. Both the films prove how earnest a film maker Ashutosh is and though both are set in villages, they tackle different issues.
Swades is a modern film with a modern day dilemma. The protagonist, Shah Rukh Khan has scaled the rungs at NASA, his green card is in the mail and yet he feels an undefined longing, an incompleteness within himself. He identifies this as guilt for not taking care of his nanny, Kishori Ballal, who brought him up. He sets out to rectify this by coming back to India to visit her in the hope that she will come back to America with him so he can give her a good and comfortable life.
It turns out though that she is staying in a village in UP, 200 miles away from Delhi, so he journeys there to meet her. She is living with Gayatri Joshi, a young, earnest girl who has left the city to go to her village to educate them and has set up a school there.
Shah Rukh reaches there and by degrees he changes from a visitor, somewhat amused and somewhat condescending to the trivial issues of life in a village to one has been given an education into the social problems of the village and then into a doer who does things for them. This includes spreading the word of education around by personally appealing to the villagers to send their children, especially their daughters to school and building them their first thermal electricity machine to generate electricity for their village.
At this point one pauses to wonder which decade the villagers were living in. Generators are seemingly unheard of and no one in the whole village seems to possess a TV set. Which makes the scene in which Shah Rukh presents his nanny with a beauty parlour style foot massager unintentionally funny.
At another level the film dwells on the integration of Shah Rukh into the lives of the village showing a slow romance building up between him and Gayatri. She thaws from resentment because he has come to take his nanny away to compassion and love. Though again, one does not understand her needless standoffish attitude to him from the beginning.
Swades’ weak point is it’s pace. Everything happens at an idyllic pace and in so unhurried a manner there are many minutes when the story doesn’t move and this will not jell well with the audience. Also there is no real conflict. There is nothing in particular for the audience to root for. And as for life in the village, it is so highly romanticised, it is almost glossy. To imagine that centuries of thought can be drastically altered in a few weeks is to simplify the problem to a ridiculous extent.
Nevertheless it is the attempt to portray one man’s contribution to change for those that are not really his concern that must be applauded. Ashutosh Gowariker’s heart is in the right place and his greatest triumph is that he has managed to transform Shah Rukh Khan to Mohan Bhargava and not the other way around.
The one performance that stands out is that of Shah Rukh Khan who, without any of his customary mannerisms, gets into the skin of the character and aptly portrays its convictions and frustrations. Gayatri Joshi is easy on the eyes but needs to work on her acting and diction. She is not heroine material. Kishori Ballal as the nanny and Master Smit Sheth as Gayatri’s younger brother are okay.
Music by A R Rahman is one of his best in recent times. Javed Akhtar’s lyrics add to the relevance of the music. But there are too many songs and two, the Dussera one and the one with Makrand Deshpande could easily be cut to give the film some pace.
Swades is what, in the good old days before everything became streamlined, would be known as ‘art’ cinema except with a visible commercial face. Go for it.
