I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Dubbing songs in "remakes" can only be a daunting thing for a singer, especially when the songs are rendered by someone else in the original. My understanding of Telugu is just rudimentary...I always wonder how a native Telugu speaker responds to VJ's Telugu.
Another curiosity that leaves me wondering at times: The films by K. Viswanath with music by KVM always feature at least a couple of songs by VJ. But the K.Viswanath-Illaiyaraja team films seldom do...Swathi Muthyam, Sagara Sangamam, Saptapadi (was that by IR?)...no VJ in those films. Swarnakamalam did have a VJ song. But was that a KViswa film?

Naaz dont laugh at ones physical appearance. If everyone does it doesnt mean that we should also do the same.
Can you give me a link to the Newyork post article?I want to write to them, thanks.

Nobody is laughing at anybody's physical appearance, Ramki. I am just another "karuppu" indian myself. Learn to identify racism before you address it. What I said was a dark-complexioned Indian myself. You might want to write India Abroad and other such "Indian" newspapers with particular reference to their matrimonial sections where "wheatish" or "fair" complexioned "girls" are sought for "jat" or "iyengar brahmin" boys. That's a good case of both racism and casteism both tied together.
When I watched that "karuppu nila" song at Theatre Nagesh in Chennai the whole audience - karppus and vellais - together, burst out laughing. They were not laughing at anybody's physical appearance. They were enjoying the irony of Vijayakanth being referred to as the "Black Moon." Everybody found that to be a STRETCH.
Secondly, the Dravidian Race is "Black" anthropologically. Vijaykanth is of that race. And everyone can see he is "black."
Amala is Irish from her Mother's side. (Her mother is born and raised in Dublin. Her father is Bengali.) So, she is quasi "White" by Indian hierarchies based on skin pigmentation. Everyone can see that she is "white".
So spare me the sanctimony, my dear friend. The laughter in that joke was not born out of scorn. It arose out of irony.
I know what my skin colour is, and it isn't "white." Racial prejudice is different from Racial (Insider) Humour. I am sure you can see the difference.

Is "Iruttile Puddichcha Kozhikattai," a very common and often used tamizh epigram considered a racial slur, or a tamizh putdown, or a phrase of sarcastic tamizh wit? I have heard even people who are "dark" themselves use it and laugh out loud.

Naaz, I'm sure "Iruttile Pudichcha Kozhukkattai" brings smile to one's lips, but I will never dare say that to someone since it is always used only in a derogatory sense.
As far as "Karuppu Nila" is concerned are you sure people were laughing at its irony? I doubt it because, whenever I see/hear that song, I laugh too, but not at the irony but at the simile! I always thought that was a beautiful comparison for a black hero - I mean a black complexioned hero!

Thanks, Karthi.
The point I was making is that as a people we should have the ability to laugh at ourselves - at our expense. To say that an "ethnic" group cannot have its own "insider" jibes - in language and literature - at its own kind, is a complete misunderstanding of what it is to be "politically correct." The saying above (Iruttile) is part of a language used "within" by a specific community. It is not meant to be derogatory, as the person using it - a "dravidian" himself/herself cannot really believe that they are themselves "white." It is that irony that we ought to smile at - not just the saying itself.
Racism is when a natural physical characteristic is ordained to have (or not) an inherent "value" - and its systemic pervasiveness in all sorts of hierarchies. Indian Matrimonial ads. for starters - where racism, sexism and casteism all are out there - without a second thought! Racism and the subsequent "devaluation" are always "contextual."
The simile in the song with the visual of VK was what made people laugh. The audience would have been indifferent had the song been without the VK visual, and Rekha was just singing it all to herself.
The incredulity factor (hence ironic) in that simile - along with the visual - is what made people choke on their own laughter.
It is a lovely song, nicely done by SJ. Wouldn't Karuppu Suriyan be a more appropriate comparison/simile for a "black hero" - given that the moon (almost always) in Indian literature (all languages) has/is given "feminine" attributes? And, interestingly enough, both sun and moon when they precede "karuppu," leave one with the image of an "eclipse" more than a "blast" of light! (Heroism is almost, always "masculist" in its connotations.)
Now - I am going to get back to VJ. Enough with VK!!

You dont get my point do you?
If someone makes joke, say about a blind person and few fools laugh , that doesnt make it a 'joke'.
But now i realise to which 'group' you belong to..so end to this conversation and participation.

You have no right to say what I can think feel and post. I also know which "group" you belong to. So spare me your sensitive and baseless crap.

Priya, that song from Rasaleela is considered a classic in Malayalam Film Music. I think the music for Rasaleela was by MSV. Vani also had a good song in the Malayalam film Payanam...You can find that at musicindiaonline, I think. Recently VJ recorded 30 new Thirupaavai compositions. The music is by a young, new talent by the name Vijay Anand. I don't know if the album has had a commercial release yet. Chenna-vasis might be better informed about that...

Hi Naaz,
Sapthapadhi had KVM as MD and there is a great song in Swarna Kamalam by VJ MD is IR.But Gharshana songs are more original and it has the same class.U can try it .Most of the songs from Seetha koka chiluka in Telugu are by VJ.Only for a change okay!!!!

Hi Vidya, thanks for the recommendations. I have heard the SeethaKC songs and the Swarna Kamalam songs. Is there a VJ song in Sapthapadhi? It was remade into Hindi with music by Rajesh Roshan. The name of the remake was Jaag Utha Insaan (Sridevi - Mithun). The remake was a big flop. But the songs were interesting.

Naaz,
It was a VJ hour and I caught it halfway through the program. Here is the link. Look under "Radio Stations". MediaPlayer works best for me.

Naaz:
The music of Ragam and Rasaleela is by Salil Chaudhari. The VJ-KJY duet is quite a classic, it has a lot of sudden interesting varaitions just like say kavidhai kelungal. VJ and KJy have of course done a good job as usual.
Thanks,
avr

Hi Neel,
I did log on to the station after I posted here. VJ hour was over, I guess. It was all about South Asians and how they eat too much of carbohydrates (it was quite fun listening to it all in Tamizh!!). But I missed the songs. But I do have VJ music at home...but no surprise element of a radioshow, for sure!
Was Rasaleela really by SC, AVR? He was not too keen on VJ in his later southern efforts. VJ-KJY classical training shows through their duet renditions. "Gangai Yamunai" from Imayam and "Man Kandaen Man Kandaen" from Rajarishi, are good examples. Have you heard the latter? It is one of my all time classics by that team!

Did you guys notice that when Shanker-Ganesh, Chandrebose and even MSV were all were in their peak when vani was their "asthana padagi". They all collapsed when they started going for other singers.

susi, urs is very wrong perception. It is true that VJ was the "Aasthanap Paadahi" for MSV. But the reason for his downfall is totally different. He was there in no1 position for very long period. And then entry of IR changed the TFM scenario totally. (It is something simillar to IR-ARR scenario).

Hello Susi,
The MDs you mention above have also had some fine songs with other singers besides VJ. Chandrabose's great hit to date "Maampoove Siru Mainave" from Machchanai Partheengala was by PS and PJC. Similarly the hits from Kanni Paruvathile were all by SJ (music S-G). MSV's classic duet from Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu ("Thandhana Thaththanna") was by SPB-SJ. Chitra also had a great hit with Chandrabose in "Medhuva Medhuva Oru Kaadhal Paatu" from Anna Nagar Mudhal Theru...there must be other songs to add to this "others" list.
The "collapse" of the above MDs might have been more complex than just the VJ factor. It was affected by the "globalisation" of TFM with the advent of ARR and the whole emphasis on "Marketing," which was detrimental to business aspect of Mass-produced Music in general, all over India. Complacency on the part of the masses regarding "excellence" in Film Music also (still) plays a significant role in the slow and consistent deterioration of "standards" of good taste in ART.
