Ilayaraaja's voice

  I observed that many people do not like Ilayaraaja's voice. I liked his rustice voice and it had a naive and undecoratedness about it. When he sings the songs he brings the manvasanai to it. You can feel the punch of his voice in many songs which have pathos and intense expressions.
  
  The best I liked his voice is in the song
  Thenpadi seemayile therodum- (nayagan). The other songs I like are:
  Veenaikku veena kunju -(ellam en rasathan)
  kasturi mane mane - film(???)
  avarampoovil asainthadum katre - (avarampoo)
  janani janani - adhi sankarar
  april mayile - idhayam
  appanendrum ammaiyendrum - Guna

  Poo malaiye is from the film "Pagal Nilavu"
  Thalattu mariponadhe is from the film "unnai naan sandhithen"
  
  In the film "paatu pada vaa" the two songs sung by Ilayaraaja are good
  
  1)nil nil nil badhil sol sol - Ilayaraaja and Uma Ramanan
  2)vazhi vidu en devi varugiral - IR and SPB
  
  I was just entranced by his song "kamatchi karuna vilasani" in his album Geetanjali.
  
  I feel IR does not sing a song ordinarily. He adds some expressions to it also like the great singer SPB does. Can you guys suggest some songs where he has performed like that?

  Nil Nil Badil Sol Sol (Paatu Pada Vaa) is such a lovely song.
  But if you see it in the movie you will feel
  like puking.
  
  Many of Raja's songs recently did not reach
  the masses because very poor picturisation.

  I have my reservations about IRs voice. It suits well for rustic & devotional solos but not for romantic duets (Kadhal oviyum.. , naan thedum sevvandhi are a few exceptions - even in that the initial humming was too nasal). I feel a better voice from SPB or KJ could have done justice to many of IRs romantic duets.

  Thenral vandhu, nil nil nil badhil sol sol sol,kan malargalin from thaippongal,indha maan from karakaatakkaran,poo maalaye, adi athaadi, etc, etc,etc., waw!!!its ilay, his voice thats inimitable !! Technically if there are limitations in his voice and singing prowess, then I thank those limitations !!! I LOVE his voice !!!

  It is true that had SPB sung songs like 'poomaalaiyE' or 'naan thEdum', they would have sounded yards better. But Raja chooses songs with magnificient orchestrisation (forget the spelling) to sing. So the overall effect of the music overshadows the shortcomings of his voice.
  
  One more thing to note is that in 90% of the cases, he sings with S.Janaki who actually overshadows the male voices. SPB himself has found it difficult to cope up with Janaki many times.
  
  Both the above mentioned songs, 'thendRal vandhu', 'sorgamE enRaalum', 'pon malargaLin azhaippithazh (thaip pongal)', 'adi aaththaadi' have Janaki pairing up with Raja.
  
  Also when singers like Kamal, Krishna Chandran etc sing, it is invariably Janaki who accompanies them. 'ninaivO oru paRavai', 'sundari neeyum', 'kaNmaNi anbOdu', 'EdhO mOgam', 'poovaadaik kaatRu' are some of them.

  There is one nice song in 'Anandha Raagam'. Ilayaraja with KJ Yesudas 'Kadaloram kadaloram alaigal odi vilayadum'. I like that song very much, especially starting music.
  
  Forget about film songs. Guy's.. have you heard
  IR's devotional album 'Geethanjali'?. All songs are good, expecially 'Kaamaatchi Karunaavilaasini...'. Exceptional voice. I can hear that 100 times continously. I won't feel bored.

  That is what I would like to hear. Many people still debate that IR's voice is not upto the mark or he does not sing gamakas well etc. But IMO, for many people like me his voice has given solace.
