Sakalakal Vallavan IR song Ilamai Idho Idho s... Happy New Year percussion bit used by Gavin Greenaway

As far as ARR' Mozartian Shakalaka Baby goes, if that song is sung in an Oasis in Saudi Arabia it will fare better. If BD removes that number from the show, it will be like puffing the Hookah back into the pot and tightenin the lid. Honestly, the song is embarrassing and the dance as shown on ABC goodmorning America was just meant for Eunuch and Monsoon at Mahim Railway station in Bombay. - Mayhem, I mean. God Bless American, is all I can say for now.

Watched "Peralagan" (MD: YSR) and felt that the Title score has traces of "Hotel california" by Eagles.

The link courtesy ,Gyan ....in the thread AE by Rahman
The above link has a french song which is said to be the inspiration for Rahman's 'Yaakai thiri' track in AE....Karthick.S, what do you think abt this?.Personally i don't find any big similarity.

Thamizhan, you will find similarity if you hear it along with the original song i posted, no kidding, i had to do that to come back to the thread with conviction.
Anyway thanks, I forgot to send coolgoose to Karthik, who can give the wake up call to all music fans and also to ARR. It is time everyone had Oru Gin Naal Tea.

NEW alert!!! the AE song is a combination of two songs from the Mylene Farmer album "Sans Contrafecon" and "We'll Never Die" Man, two much heaven from Rahman.
i am trying to find further links ;---) by comparing with all other songs in the album, if i find time, seems like this weekend is gone in this forensic investigation....

"7G Rainbow colony" trailer BGM seems to have heavy inspiration of "Johny"'s theme.

I have been a long time fan of Mylene Farmer and also her proteges like Alizee. I do not find anything similar between 'Yaakkai thiri' and both 'We'll never die' and 'Sans Contrefacon' (not 'contrafecon'). The so-called similarity has to be evident to more than one person. If not, I personally feel that the simialrity seen by that one person is more to do with the genre/ feel of the song than actual tune. And no one can 'copy' a genre. A genre is there for anyone to adapt/ adopt and interpret.
And that, again, in my opinion, is not plagiarism. Rather, I'd call it true innovation. You create a international feel in a Tamil song, without lifting specific passages/ parts. I'm not here to glorify ARR here but when somebody isnt guilty of plagirism in a specific case, I suppose I've to say so.

Here is probably a contrasting viewpoint, but I am not willing to get into an argument about this. Take it or leave it. A genre, if I understand it right, is characterised by a set of instruments and/or musical phrases used more often and are easily identifiable eg. banjo and blueg rass. ARR does not follow any particular genre (even though he said it is 'pop' or 'world music'). He would take mostly the rhythm elements in a particular genre and incorporate it into his song. So most of the time he is on the clean side - he does not copy the melody, he does not copy the rhythm or beat, but only the rhythm arrangment i.e the set of instruments used to maintain the rhythm. The fact that mainly the tune is his major contribution in a song, he is always in search of genres to build his next melody on. This he does mainly because he always wants a different 'sound' (a word he more often tends to use). Contrast this with IR, who finds any sound 'musical' ('even the barking of dogs or braying of donkeys !!!!). I have now and then felt a kind of 'deja vu' listening to ARR's songs. I used to take some effort to see if there was any case of copy or inspiration. I have now given up on it. The fact that I find his music very good and entertaining, but not entirely to my tastes has kept me from doing any more research into his style.

Kiru:
Completely agree on the genre part. I also agree that he consciously tries to break the rules of genres and create a newer sound. I too sense 'deja vu' all too often while I listen to new tracks by ARR. But that deja-vu sense, I've concluded, is in a sense, a ARR trademark.
I get a deja-vu even with IR's tracks. The other day I was watching 'Rettai vaal kuruvi'...the first song was 'Sudhanthiratha vaangiputtom'. Reminded me so much of 'Marugo marugo'. IR's sense of deja-vu stems from the tunes per se...raaga if we need to be more specific. ARR's sense of deja-vu is more the set of instruments and not necessarily the tune, IMO.

>>ARR's sense of deja-vu is more the set of >>instruments and not necessarily the tune, IMO.
I beg to differ. ARR has gone back to his own old songs (melody) often.
In AE, in the 'jana gana mana' song, mid portion of the saranam is cleary derived from the saranam of the song 'Eduda tambi surya Melam' ( Movie Pudya Mannargal).

where is the tune in a Rahman song is the what confounds me these days, where was one consistently? if there was one, how strong was that tune. Especially with Aakai Thiri. Especially considering the percentage of original songs to major inspirations. IR has perhaps around 20 isto 3500, MSV has 10 or so to his couple of thousands. I imagine ARR has around 20 to his 300. There is a huge difference in quality expected of any composer in the matter of inspiration. Aakai Thiri is not just one attempt for different sounds or structures, I remember finding Rahman trying extraordinarily in the Karisal Tharisal or something like that (Taj Mahal) by following more or less that fantastic fantastic Tears For Fears, I Believe..... Plus, that one Michael Bolton tune combined with that song. It is good on the one hand to pick up a line or two, but to get strength from two or more songs to make one song, I think is difficult to accept. Hey, who cares, heh?

Karthik,
You should have gotten a deja vu feeling atleast 300 times. According to one estimate that is the number of songs based on kalyani by IR !!!
Re: deja vu w.r.to melodies by ARR or IR, I am sure there are hundreds of threads/opinions on this forum. No point in me pursuing that comparison in this thread. I just wanted to mention this 'rhythm arrangement' thingy.

Jus watch the new advertisement for 'Saffola sunflower oil'(...Wife compelling her husband to reduce his wait..in vain opting to saffola..blah..blah thingy)the tune seems to sound so similar to Rahman's track 'Dilse re' from Dil se(Sandhosa kanneere in Tamil)
comments on this pls, everybody esp Karthick.S...
And i too get the same feeling of Vj when seeing the trailers of 7G Rainbow...but can conclude only after a couple of hearings
