Manisegaran & RR
thank you very much.
Do you mean V Ramamurthy by VR?.
If yes, did he compose music for some films without MSV?. (just curious)

Minnal
VR means MS VIsvanathan and TK Ramamoorthy. The first film in which both teamed up was Panam by NSKrishnan. It was NS Krishnan who named the team Visvanathan-Ramamoorthy.
The last film they made together was Aayirathil Oruvan which boasts as the film that patched up kannadasan and MGR (temporary) and brought BR Bantulu of Sivaji Unit inot MGR unit.
After this film Visvanathan and Ramamoorthy went seperate ways. Visvanathan composed for Nee while Ramamoorthy composed for Saadhu Mirandaal. MSV withstood the test of time till the coming of Ilayaraja in 1976. Ramamoorthy tried now and then but could not meet the needs and taste of the modern trends. So Ramamoorthy ended with about 40 films. Much later, in 1997, both of them came back in Engiruntho Vanthaan, but the modern music they composed could not be digested by the new generation.

Soaked in nostalgia
IMAGINE YOURSELF in a drawing room filled with guests, gaiety, laughter and lilting music. That was exactly the ambience at Sastri Hall that evening. A formal gathering in its most informal sense. The programme was the 150th show of Sundar's ``Ragapravaham'' entitled ``Eppadi Padinaro'' - a presentation of rare classical film
melodies of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, organised by Vintage Heritage. The singers included Hamsa Subramanian and Sowmya Muralidharan from Brhaddvani, apart from the inimitable Revathy Sankkaran.
``I will sing this song every time, even when I am 90'' laughed Revathy as she began to sing a few melodious numbers of an era long gone by. ``Kadhalaginaen'', composed by G. Ramanathan from the film ``Aayiram Thalai Vaangiya Apoorva Chinthamani'', was the song.
A fascinating aspect of Revathy is that she enjoys the songs she renders, as much as others do, and makes no bones about it. Hence the cheer she emanates seems manifold. Revathy is a good imitator. So whether the original singer is Varalakshmi, M. S. Rajeswari or Banumathi, you close your eyes and it is not Revathy whom you hear but the voice of that singer herself. Her prowess in music is admirable, as was seen that
evening. Why was she in hibernation all these years, you wonder.
That the treasurer of Vintage Heritage is also a knowledgeable musician, was seen when K. Sundar rendered the songs of Nagiah, P. U. Chinnappa, T. M. Soundararajan and A. M. Raja with ease and confidence. And interestingly, he gave essential details of each number, - the composer, singer, film, the artistes, year and so on.
Sowmya Muralidharan and Hamsa Subramanian began the show with the Radha-Jayalakshmi number ``Manampola Mangalyame'' from the film of the same name and straightway set the right mood for the evening. The effervescence with which the two rendered the song made it a commendable opening. Diligence coupled with their gifted voices made their pieces, solo and duets, scintillating. Sowmya's smile and warmth as she acknowledged the applause of the discerning audience, after every song of hers, seemed to bridge the gap, if any, between the singer and the listener.
``Mohana Punnagai Aeno'' from the 1957 film ``Pathini Deivam'' was delectably rendered by Sundar and Hamsa. But undoubtedly Hamsa stole the show in this number with her exquisite nuances. ``Are Sowmya and Hamsa from Brhaddvani or Brighadwani?'' quipped Revathy Sankkaran, astounded at the way the two sailed through the intricacies of every song very much like the veterans who had sung them.
Hamsa, you felt, could have responded to the compliments and claps more cheerfully.
Chosen from the films of the 1930s up to the late 1950s, the list of songs was impressive. It was a nostalgic trip for A. P. Komala, the playback singer of many a yesteryear film hits, whose songs were also sung by the youngsters. She was the chief guest of the evening and she sang one of her pieces.``With minimum accompaniments `(Kothandaraman - keyboard; Mohanakrishnan - mridangam; Umashankar Roa - tabla), we have tried to present the best nostalgic pieces possible,'' said Sarveswaran, secretary, Vintage Heritage.
Very true. But you could not help wishing that the over- enthusiastic old lady beside you, had not insisted on humming every number, along with the singers, of course entirely off-key!
