Everyone is pretty bored and fed up with arguing on differences of opinions regarding MDs right ? After all typically, what would we TFMers discuss suppose we meet in person ?. Song discussions right ? So here is the thread.
Idea is someone will introduce a song and we all will discuss about the song, period. Limitation is we will automatically move to another song after 5 days of discussion. ie. anyone contributing to the thread after the first set of 5 days will have to come up with a new song!. Also whoever is starting first can state the ending date of five day period.
Some help from Ravi is required for this until some time for people to really start adhering to this.
BTW why 5 days ?? Obviously to keep the thread fresh and alive !!

Mano good that u mentioned the lyrics. The whole songs gives a nice description of her character.
Suhu, who gets close with 4 ilaignars, finds that one of them falls in love with her. Though she has liking for him, shes not able to accept his proposal as she is counting her days. She describes her condition through the song..
thandhiyilla veenai swaram tharumo
puyal varum velaiyil poovukku suyamvaramo
paavaiyin raagam sogangalo

The best lines are

nilam pudhidhu
vidhai pazhudhu
Now comes THE line of the song

BTW, who is the lyricist?

Shall we start on a new song, which must be one of the all-time favourites of most DFers ? Yes, shall we talk about "ILamayenum poongaatru..". This song is appreciated all around for its amazing interludes, a subtle, yet recognizable sentiment of pathos through the song, great lyrics(KannadAsan ??), soulful singing by SPB, all packaged in three melodious stanzas.
Come on guys, please pitch in with your inputs.

vijay,
VM is the lyricist. He mentioned in one i.view that he first wrote
paavayin raagam sogangalo
..*something*.. megangalo
Then he realised Kannadhasan has used the same karpanai and rushed back to the recording studio
(all the way tensely wondering if the recording has already been done) just in time to change the lyrics.

sankaran,
if the present song discussion is inactive for another 2 days then we shall start a new song. that was the original rule for this thread as said by mukund. pl. do not start another song until then.

I would like to discuss 'Kamban Yemandhan' of SPB or 'Kallelam Manicka Kallalugama'

Vijay,
let's make it one day.As waiting for one more day, kinda makes u restless. If there's no discussion on a particular song for more than one full day, we'll shift to the next number in queue.
mukund,
Since u have started this thread , we'd appreciate if u cud kindly keep track of the list of songs in the queue.

yo, 5 days is too long a wait.
ellorukkum sammatham enraal, we can discuss, at a later stage after Sankaran's and The Fan's suggestions are discussed, `Adhisaya raagum, aanandha raaaaaagum, azhagiya raaaagummmmmm, aboorva raaagum'.

Hi guys,
Right now it is very confusing (after all the suggestions) as to how many max we want to discuss the song. 1 day timeout for before moving to new song seems to be unanimous. ie. even if someone writes something at the end of the day the discussion will continue.
Right now the queue is
Sankaran - Ilamaiyenum Poongatru
The Fan - Kalellaam OR Kamban Yemandhaan
cram - Adisaya raagam.
I'll keep track of things here but if you guys find out that discussion has maxed out OR if timeout of 1 day has happpened, the next in line can immediately post it. You guys should follow this queue too.
I am unfortunately busy at work, but certainly keep posting once in a while and be regularly updating the queues.
Decide on max nof of days discussion

Let me start "Ilamaiyennum Poongaatru". First of all the song is joint product of Kannadhasan and IR. Hence I would like to discuss it from the point of view of Lyrics .
Situation:
Two lovers are about to make love. The song proceeds as a gentle background for this act. This is as I suppose an "Asariri" song as metioned in the TFM.
Starting slowly with a bell in the prelude with the flute following after the bell goes off, the song generates the romantic air above the two. Once the prelude is over the voice of SPB pops in gently.
"Ilamaiyennum Poongaatru Paadiyathu Or paattu Oru pzhudhu Or aasai sugam sugam edhilum ore sugam"
This line as I interpret tries to convey that the only feeling/thought that the lovers have at that moment is desire to make love and nothing else. No stray thoughts.
I am restricting myself in interpreting the lyrics further. But one point I noted is the following:
"Pesa (Ketka ?) Ninaithaal marandhaall Kelvi ezhummunn vizhundhaall"
This means that she is speechless and probably this is the reason why IR did not use a lady voice to make it a duet.

- thannai maranthu mannil vizhunthu ilamai malarin meethu

dhega sugathil gavanam kaattu vazhiyil payanam
gangai nadhikku mannil anayaa..
- angam muzhuthum pongum ilamai itham pathamaai thondra alli anaitha kaigal..
- mangai inamum mannan inamum kulam gunamum enna
dhegam thudithaal kannethu
Very apt..

SPB/IR/KD at their best; Sridevi at her sexiest, original nose et al..
But the camera work & direction (IV Sasi) for the song was crass to say the least..not to mention the weird headbanded face of the hero (Ravikumar?) that keeps filling the frame all too often! Way too stupid and comical attempt at portraying the act of making love.
Contrast this with another IR/SPB song in a similar situation in the woods- VM/KB's "enna satham indha neram" and you will realise KB's superior skills. and of course, kamal's!

IMO, KB hasn't done full justice to the song.It shud 've been mahendran.Wow, can't imagine how good it cud've been.

Murali i guess they are not lovers, just 2 infatuated, lustful people. THis is what i infer from the lines
mangai inamum
mannan inamum
kulam gunamum enne
dhegam thudithaal kannedhu
koondal kalaindha
konji suvaitha kiliye
enne udalo enne uravo
- From: cram (@ 206.103.12.102)

right ramki,
the song IS about lust. look at kannadhaasan's karpanai in the lines:
angam muzhuthum
pongul ilamai
idham padhamaai thondra
aLLi anaiththa kaigal
ketka ninaithaaL maranthaaL
kelvi ezhum mun vizhunthaaL
in tha nilai thaan enna vidhiyo
esp. the last line where he has aptly described how a girl in full bloom of her youth gratifies her desire, only to regret it. she is speechless, because lust has overpowered her against protesting against her lover's (luster's?) advances.
extremely beautiful lines. the overflowing, b boundless desire in the girl is also expressed wonderfully in a single line "gangai nadhikku maNNil anaiya".
great song. great lines. a great collaboration.
can we get on to the next one? ellorum enna leave-la irukkeenga polirukku? genreal aave forum-la adhiga activity kaanoam.

shall we start discussing the next song in the queue??
I will like to chose 'kamban aemandhan'.Its totally a chauvinistic song and some of the lines are really objectionable.
Kamban aemandhan
ilam kanniyarai oru malar endraanae
karpanai seidhaanae
kamban aemandhan
ambu vizhi endru aen sonnaan
adhu paivadhinaal dhano
aval arunchuvai paalene aen sonnan
adhu kodhipadhinaaldhano
deepathin jyothiyil thirukkural padithaal
deepathin perumaiyandro
andha deepathinaal oru nenjathai erithaal
deepamum paavamandro
valluvan Ilango Bharathi endroru
varisaiyai naan kanden
andha varisaiyil ullavar matrumalla
ada naanum aemandhen
**********************************
aathiram enbadhu pengalukkellam
aduppadi varai dhanae
oru aadhikka naayagan
saadhikka vandhaal
adangudhal murai dhanae
***********************************
The highlighted lines are extremely egoistic in sense. What really makes the song enjoyable is the
simple tune by MSV and pleasing voice of SPB

Ramki,
Your highlighted lines are very fitting for the movie's situation because Kamal's character is teasing Sumithra's character and knows that those lyrics will infuriate her. A sort of Taming the Shrew situation. Yes it is egotistical but the hero isn't pretending here, he's intentionally and calculatedly arrogant. I see this kind of like the emotional foreplay between the characters who don't know yet (at least the female doesn't) that they are in love. Good scene, situation, song, movie.

I have heard the song and I find it pleasant to hear, though not for its lyrical quality.
Ramki
Male egoism in tamil songs are nothing new. Hmmm... maybe we should start a new thread for this. Alright, just kidding! Back to the song. I heard SPB singing it on stage once. He sang it with a lot of emotion. What I love about this song is its tune. I don't know why but if after I heard it once that line "Kamban emaanthan" tune just keeps coming back to my head. Hats of to the composer. Of course, SPB did full justice to the song. Can someone comment on the instrumental music for this song since I have not heard the song a lot and therefore would like to know if anyone has any contradictions with the musical mood of the song.
