Everyone is pretty bored and fed up with arguing on differences of opinions regarding MDs right ? After all typically, what would we TFMers discuss suppose we meet in person ?. Song discussions right ? So here is the thread.
Idea is someone will introduce a song and we all will discuss about the song, period. Limitation is we will automatically move to another song after 5 days of discussion. ie. anyone contributing to the thread after the first set of 5 days will have to come up with a new song!. Also whoever is starting first can state the ending date of five day period.
Some help from Ravi is required for this until some time for people to really start adhering to this.
BTW why 5 days ?? Obviously to keep the thread fresh and alive !!

Vijay,
I haven't listened to this song so keenly to comment on this. I 'll try listening to it.
Ravi,
Why can't we make this a permanent thread???

Hi vijay,
Sorry, I was a little busy and held up in work. Whenever I think of Unnidam Mayangugiren I remeber the alapanai of KJY. Amazing! This alapanai I am talking comes just after the line "Naan sollum gaanam undu raagathinal" before repeating then sindhum vaanam undu.
If you try singing it, that is the point a singer will get really elated I feel. An excellent effort from VK and KJYesudas.
I have felt so many tims in IR songs that IR would have let KJY improvise on the alapanais by himself. I have felt so much emotion in his alapanais which prompts me to say so. This cannot be instructed.
A singer's involvement which beautifies a song is best exemplified in this song.
Vijay, Like you said it is simple in orchestration and yet touching.
Looking at the pattern of songs IR is making these days - I feel he is going to go more & more into orchestration. This is a feeling alone - I am able to identify so much with his music these days. I don't see you hopes satisfied in near future ;-(. But outside pure melody, music in harmony is really touching in so to say BURSTS - when it comes to heavily orchestrated music - eg. "en kanavinai kel nanba - desiya geetham - when it comes to Mara Vendum")
Sorry for digression.
It is apt to be made into a permanent thread. Looks like Ravi is not visiting this page. I will send an email directly.

hi mukund,
nice to see u back. i received a reply from rajaraaman saying that this thread may overlap with the 'songs that touch us' thread in the permanent topics. anyway we can continue discussing good songs here. i feel that the 'songs that touch us' thread does not discuss the technical or the musical aspect of the song
but only the emotional content. but this is a general topic in which all the aspects of the song including the emotional one can be discussed.

vijay,
I am happy to know that you also liked 'unnidem mayangurien'.
The remaining part of the song
vangi unn varthai ellam sangeetham,
vanna molhi basaillam devigam
boopalam ketkum polludenna polludu
sondhangal ondra kanbom.
was it written by vali?.
surprised too, seeing u appreciating a non-ir song, ( just kidding).
a small digression- one more VK piano based song
- oraiyram karpani - SPB - film - ellaikum kalam varum.

e.hari,
thanx for contributing. hopefully, we should be discussing more songs like these in the future.
if this discussion does not continue for another day, let someone start a new song.

hi pals,
what do you think of ``junior, junior'' from avargal? worth discussing?
or maybe "ilakkanam maarutho" from nizhal nijamaagirathu? has some othe best lyrics i have ever heard.

hi cram,
i wish to take up ilakannam maarudho for discussion. some of my thoughts on this song:
1. melody content is high in the song.
2. more emphasis on the tune than on interludes, typical of MSV's style. simple orchestration, IMO.
3. SPB's singing style is typical.
4. the lyrics has u have mentioned are simple and appealing.
overall, a nice song.

Vijay:
You've for got to mentioned the situation. The scene best fit with the song, where a stubborn woman start to changer her personality. IMO,it fits that scene well.

Mano it should be
idhu varai nadithadhu adhu enne vedam
idhu enne paadam:)
As you said the song can be really appreciated with the situation. Kannadasn beautifully describes the change.of heart.

hi guys,
great song, isn't it? kannadhasan's sol nayam peaked in this song.
ramki, u missed out two word in the second stanza that make all the difference. after vilakki vaippayo, the line is viLakki vaippayo. with just one small change in l-agara oasai, he has brought a world of difference. (will this fall under silaedai? pundits pls throw light). its like the difference between vizhi puNarchchi (what lovers want) and vizhippuNarchchi (what their parents want in them). see the beauty of tamil, so many subtleties that only a highly evolved language can have, and which only geniuses like kannadhaasan can bring out.
one must also not forget the role of MSV in the song, as he stopped at giving a great tune and let the lyricist and the singers take over, unlike IR, who always wants his music to make a statement.
in this song, the other line that floors me every time i listen to it is "manmathan enbavan kaN thiranthaano, peNmai thanthaano". absolutely amazing way of saying how womanhood blossoms in a girl. VM had written words on the same line in "ponmaanae koabam yeno", where she says "unnai paarththathum enthan peNmai thaan kaN thiranthathe". what imaginativeness!!!
vaazhga tamizh, valarga tamizh.
thodarattum discussion.

MSV - KB combination in this period were at their best. IMO, SPB excelled in this song, his sweet voice exactly bringing up the required emotions. All the three interludes were well composed - though it sounds dangeroulsy close to interludes in vilizeya kadhai eludhu and malare kurngi malare. I like the staring and ending flute piece in the first interlude.
This song can be a epitome for how did MSV song sound in mid 70s. It is melodious and immensly enjoyable to hum, with smooth interludes but still the lyrics are crystal clear to hear and enjoy.

can we take up the classic 'megame megame' from pallaivanacholai next for discussion:
some salient features:
1. first of all 'inspired' by a jasjit singh ghazal. composed by shankar-ganesh.
2. won national award for VJ.
3. highly melodious and slightly difficult to sing.
4. having a slight melancholic touch and can put u in a trance.

Megame megame has space and a great pace about it. Easily one of the greatest soft melodies with the right mix of pathos. It is truly a Shankar-Ganesh memorabilia for me, even if they copied from somewhere. VJ has given it the best feel.
You should hear a similar song by VJ in malayalam. The song is: Kunkuma Pottilurum Kavithey, Yende Sringara Sangeetha Yamam. One of the most perfect and self soothing southern carnatic based melodies by composer A.T. Ummer, whose melodies have always been on par with that of MSV. With that Megame Megame similarity yet uniquely south Indian song never ever captured by any composer in India. If you ask me, IR is yet to come up with such a 'flowing melody' like these two songs that clings to your heart for the rest of your life. Anyone out there get hold of these 2 songs, you have got the two best Indian songs.

megame megame is an excellent song so awfully picturized. i feel that the song attained its heights due to VJ. she was amazing in the smoothness. surprisingly the song fitted in thamizh as i would expect not many ghazals to fit in TFM so easily.

megame megame is probably the only reason shankar-ganesh will ever be forgiven for all the atrocities they have committed on music (ayyayyo, thappu, thappu. SG rasigargaLe, manasila vechchukkaatheenga. dai cram, politeness da. udhai vaangappore).
i don't like VJ one bit, but some of her songs are truly moving, like this one. another one is the 'bole re papihara' from Guddi (hindi).
megame megame was once shown in a carnatic-based TFM programme on Sun. someone tell me what raag this is (sounds more like a raag than a ragam).

vijay regarding:
> having a slight melancholic touch and can put u in a trance.
In the movie, suhasini is a cancer patient. Hence it's suitable for that situation. IMO, the situation is dramatic influence on the song. Suhasini is dying due because of cancer. Look the Kavijnar what he has to say about that:
megame Megame Pall Nila Theyuthey
Degamey Theyenum Thenmozhi Veesuthey...
In the movie, suhasini's character is setup so that she is always happy. Look at the anlogy between the Theyum Nila and the sughasini's character. Ofcourse VJ rendering is excellent too.

mano,
thanx for the info. yes the song flows freely like a river. the orchestration is nothing great but is apt for the song. VJ's voice is also apt for these ghazal type of songs. i was equally moved to listen to 'muthu muthu therottam' from aaniver about which i plan to discuss in the future. it is a lilting melody. shankar-ganesh and VJ make a good combo.
