Everyone is pretty bored and fed up with arguing on differences of opinions regarding MDs right ? After all typically, what would we TFMers discuss suppose we meet in person ?. Song discussions right ? So here is the thread.
Idea is someone will introduce a song and we all will discuss about the song, period. Limitation is we will automatically move to another song after 5 days of discussion. ie. anyone contributing to the thread after the first set of 5 days will have to come up with a new song!. Also whoever is starting first can state the ending date of five day period.
Some help from Ravi is required for this until some time for people to really start adhering to this.
BTW why 5 days ?? Obviously to keep the thread fresh and alive !!

I want to say something about "poomAlai vAngi vanthAn'. This song stands out for it's amazing portrayal of a fallen giant(Siva Kumar's character). The usage of percussion and violin are in particular out of the world. I would like to mention these parts in the interludes, the starting of the first interlude(violin) and the ending of the second(violin + keyboard). They are absolutely majestic. IR's choice of kAnada(or is it a variant of kAnada?) is not a bit wrong for the situation. You don't need a big music system or a CD player to appreciate this majestic song, just a humble 2-in-1 suffices.

hi folks, cram here. poomaalai vaangi vanthaan is truly a great song. and the lyrics complement the composer's imaginativeness aptly. i mean, look at the lines
kadarrkkarai engum manal veliyil
kaathali kaaladi thaedinaan
mohanam paadum velaiyilum
sindhuvil raagam paadinaan
vidhi yenum oonjalil aadinaan
boadhayinaal pugazh izhandhaan
soodavum thoallillai aallillai
simply brilliant work from Vairamuthu, if i am not mistaken. digressing a little, i must say VM has this annoying habit of using very prosaic words in poetry. in the above song, "aallillai" fits into the song pattern but sounds jarring. similarly, in thenrale ennai thodu, he says "idhazhin rasangal enakkku pidikkum". ennayya ithu, enakku pidikkum, unakku pidikkathunnuttu.
kannadhaasan never committed such fatal errors, which is why i rate him miles ahead, whatever sivaji ganesan may say.
btw, i have an idea for a thread. Which combo was more memorable: IR-Kannadhaasan or IR-Vairamuthu? Anyone interested may post their views on this.

mukund,
i know murali sankar 'cos he's my roomie here.
he had told u that he just wanted to be in a discussion like this, that's all. he did not have any songs in mind first of all. but since u asked him he came up with a song. so i think we can continue with poomalai for atleast some time and then switch over to mandram vantha thendralukku.
what i like about this song poomalai is:
1. the violin interludes after the 2 stanzas are just amazing.
2. the picturization during the second interlude.
KB plays the song in the BGM in the scene where sivakumar's driver is sent home. and then when the driver cries after knowing this the violins pick up and reach a crescendo giving me goose pimples.
3. the sogam has been beautifully brought about IR using kaanada raagam.

Hi vijay,
I don't know what is the deal between you 2 roomies !! May be you will do the dishes today for edging out Murali this way. :-).
About Poomalai Vangi Vanthan
I personally have always felt KJY of Film is better than KJY of Carnatic. This is evident in the alapanai at the start of the song. Crystal clear voice and emotion packed as well. In fact I love his Carnatic based film songs so much.
The scene as you had mentioned - where violins accentuate the sogam in the scene - is really great.
There was a silly question once asked to Vairamuthu regarding this song as to why the lines are "Mohanam Paadum Velaiyilum .." whereas the ragam is Kaanada. :-)
The emotion is really appreciable at the point where he cries "Vidhiyenum Oonjalil aadinaan" .
As if the whole song builds up to a crescendo at this point.

let me discuss the song suggested by mural sankar, mandram vantha thendralukku. what i like about the song is its meaninful yet simple lyrics.
lines like
'thaamarai mele neerthuli pol
thalaivanu thalaiviyum vazhvathenna' are simple yet convey the point clearly.
to aguy like me who generally does not bother much about lyrics this song made an impact with lyrics.
but i have heard a friend of mine debating a line in this song. the line goes like
'nanbargal pole vaazhvatharkku maalaiyum
melamum thevayenna'
he argues that husband and wife are actually good friends and so this line is contradictory. what do u think? i thought that the line was clear and self-explanatory.
regarding the music the use of trumpets is excellent and this song is one of the best examples of the usage of trumpets by IR.
another song that can be mentioned is 'kannan vanthu padugindran' from rettai vaal kuruvi.

how can this thread be sent to the archive?
iam reviving it. i need help from everyone including mukund for making this interesting. as he says songs discussion is a pleasant change from the ARR-IR fights.
can we take up the V.Kumar classic 'unnidam mayangugiren' from then sindudhe vaanam for discussion?
mukund, a suggestion. let us decrease the stay time to i day. that is if no one continues for more than one day we can take up another song. in this way we can prevent the archiving of this thread.
also,
ravi,
can we make this a PERMANENT TOPIC?
i feel the topic is very apt for making it permanent.

i'll start.
the song is sung by the great KJY.
prelude: a fantastic piano piece on par with the jhony song and uravugal thodarkathai song if not better. V.Kumar strikes gold right here itself.
the piano fantastically leads to the song.
tune: excellent!! the song will fit many categories like 'classic solos' 'best of KJY', 'sentimental love songs'. looks like it has strong western classical influence.
interlude : the first one is short and characteristic of the duration of interlude music in those days, but is a fine
combo of piano and violins making me yearn for more.
the second interlude is a solo violin with a touch of melancholy. beautiful! again the piano takes over at the end and leads to the second stanza. simple orchestration, yet touching!!
iam expecting something like this from IR today, but i have not been lucky yet!
finally, thanks to muthax's site where iam listening to this song right now for the nth time. for those interested the link is

forgot to mention the lyrics which are simple yet excellent and have conveyed the love of the hero (sivakumar?) in a gentle manner. they bcarry a strong romantic flavour.here are some samples:
... then sindhum vaanam undu megathinaal
naan sollum gaanam undu raagathinaal
kaar kaala kulirum maargazhi paniyum
kanne un kai sera thaniyum
iravena pagalena thazhuvu
idhazhoram pudhu raagam ezhuthu...'
alas, where can i find lyrics like these today?
iam generally not much bothered about lyrics. i bother only about the tune. but there are a few songs like these which forces me to take note of the lyrics. and KJY's delivery is crystal clear.
what a pity, i can't make out most of what hariharan or ARR sing today.
