What's the greatest song that Ilayaraja has composed? I think it is "Kanmani, anbodu..." from "Guna". The thing I like about this song is that Ilayaraja has cleverly used a "happy" tune for a sad situation in the film. What do you guys think?

>>>The only song which is popular all over the world. Still holds the first place in the world as a song liked by everybody..---- a Song from Dhalapathy.
Another joke of the century.
This proves how the various cites and magazines carried false propoganda in support of IR and how they have been successful.
Raj:
That song lost the posotion and was in number 4 position...not even worth a bronze medal. Ha..ha..ha...
But even God can't help this..for the next 100 odd years people will still keep saying that the song from Dhalapathi is No. 1 in the poll.

Kiru,
The song 'Deiviga raagam' has a subtle melancholy and sweetness in the music, chorus, very angelic. I have not watched the movie. But I feel I should watch the movie just for this song.
Naadam Enjeevane- Kaadal Oviyam. It is a sheer melody with lovely flute pieces
Pootukkal pottalum - Chatriyan - The enthu in this song is very infectious. I feel like a kid when I hear this number.
Vanaville - Ramana.A very good Dharmavathi example
where you can immediately identify its beauty in the opening humming itself. This song also has an
underlying sadness in it.
Isai Medaiyil Ilamaikaalam - A very rare , unique composition in Dharbari Kaanada without the usual DK curves. I thought DK was an over exploited raagam with nothing new ,anybody has to offer. This song came as a whiff of fresh air.

Gee, this is a tough question! I'd say, just one song that I can listen to again and again tirelessly... That would have to be (drumroll please)...
Thavikkithu Thayanguthu (Nadhiyai Thedi Vantha Kaathal)-- fresh, fresh, fresh, out of this world composition! I could listen to this song to no end!

My vote is for "Enulil Engo Yaengum Geetham" from Rosappoo Ravikaikari. This is a song that can evoke so many feelings of desire and despair. Amazing.

Villain, That was a good choice to prove that the most raunchy number could also be composed wonderfully using classical SriRagam /Madhyamavathi (The flute and violin in the interludes are just samples)

Difficult to decide THE GREATEST. But Poomaalaiye, Kadhal Oviyam, Ilamayenum Poongaatru, Poonkathave are up there at the top.

Its truly innovative.

villian,
now I know what's your problem.. The problem with you is that you judge a song using wrong parameters.
You think 'nila kayudhu neram' is a bad song?
It's a situational song. Just ignore the lyrics of the song and look for the rest. Interludes, tune and the brilliant use of flute and violin. If the lyrics is bad, blame it on the director and the lyricist. Besides, as a playback singer, SJ did a great job in that song... if you felt that kamal and ambika were actually 'doing' it while singing that song, well that was indeed the success of the song. You know what I mean?
IR oru interview-la sonnadhu idhu: "Nila kayudhu-kku mettu potta adhey Ilayaraja than janani janani-kkum mettu pottadhu. Oru nalla sirpy-ala kadavul silayum sedhukka mudiyum, ammi kallayum sedhukka mudiyum " -- IR oru nalla sirpy.
-- Two extreme situations and everything in-between. IR was the only one who could do great in both the extremes.. Just understand that.
To answer the qn of this thread --
It is impossible to pick just one 'greatest' song of IR.

How about Thoothu Solvadaradi(Singara velan)? Real nice melody.

Guys,
I consider 'Kadhal Oviyum, Paadum Kaviyam' from Alaigal Oivadillay as the best Song of IR to date.
Just imagine. Excelent blend of orchestration, with lovely interludes & matured voices.
I heard it in the 'DENON' system, under System generated Pro Logic Mode. This old song of 1980's sounds really great.
