Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Venkat: Sure! It was a long time back. The professor was G.Govindarajan, affectionately called Govindarasanar. His class was always full. He had a commanding presence and a powerful voice. Nobody dared answering his roll call with anything but 'ulen ayya'. There was another one who tried to mimic him. About him we sang 'paadam solli 'bore' adithaal podhadhenru
pattu solli 'bore' adikkum .....'.
I don't know your email address. Please provide one. Cheers.

bb/other DFers, just FYI the following site, a magazine, has numerous interesting articles with photos dating from several years back from the 80s on playback singers/MDs/international music etc. You can use a lot of info from these articles to add to the writeups on SOTDs whenever you find anything relevant/interesting.
Just as an example here is one on Sriram Parasuram
http://www.studio-systems.com/Playback&Fastforward/PlayBack/1986/December/Dec34.htm

The site also has hell a lot of interesting articles on technology being used in the music industry, tips for studio builders etc.etc.

bb, you are featuring atleast one song of all ARR's eventhough udaya, boys(noise) are inferior.
If popular taste is the index, why can't u feature
HJ's saamy? kaakekaake? ySR's kk? TI?
VS's dhool?,thithikkudhe, villain? These are in no way lesser than boys.

Hi!
Todays's SOTD features a female version of "thingal mAlai vennkudaiyAn" from "karumbu", & the singer is given as S.Janaki. But it sounds like P.Suseela'a voice to me. Can anyone clarify this?

Sriram, I do not know how I missed your posting. Mozilla in linux does not come with any unicode fonts. You may be able to get tamil GPL-ed open type fonts from http://www.tamillinux.org download area. Check this link,
http://www.tamillinux.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewdownload&cid=1
if it is broken, follow it from the homepage/downloads...

Senty, I do not know what do you mean by juxtaposed.
We all use TSCII 1.7 fonts (when not using unicode :), so you will be able to get tones of fonts for this standard from http://www.tscii.org
If you want to get fonts for all occasions (TSCII, TAB, Murasu-compatible, kumudam, kalki...) try from my ftp server for linux utilities ftp://lightsource.physics.utoronto.ca/pub/venkat/
download any ttf fonts with tsc prefix there.

We've been talking about the song and the link to silambu. what about the movie itself? Why was it canned? Who starred in it? What was the situation of this song? Why the need to go back to silappathikaaram for a song?

Sriram - (mozilla, linux, ttf), is all already solved. You just need to download the latest mozilla rpms, put all ttf in a .fonts dir and restart x. First check the FAQ under tamillinux.org (FAQ::Browsers::Mozilla). we now have much better tamil tools under linux than win.

Venkat/bb, belated thanks for the last SOTD. I have become quite addicted to this song after listening to it today. A poignant tune rendered exceptionally well by both KJY and PS.

What a lovely song!I too loved the chorus in the PS version.
As Venkat has pointed out this could be the only instance of a Ilakkiya Padal in TFM.Always wondered about our MDS' imagination when they compose for a Bharathiyar song- a samakala Ilakkiyam. But this effort by SC is really stunning.A Non-tamil effort on a Tamil Ilakkiyam. An absolute dampener on the Tamil singers-Tamil singing- arguments!
Ilango Adigal- Cheran Senguttuvan s Brother, from the current location of Kerala, and Tamil of those days almost matching the current Malayalam sounds-Two good reasons for a flawless rendering by KJY??
It would be a good search if someone could locate Ilakkiya padalgal in TFM.
A KVM composition of "Maasil Veenayum" (TMS-TLM)
A MSV composition of Pasuram in Roshakkari sung by Maharajapuram Santhanam
Though these 2 won t come under the category of "thingal " but they arefrom 7th and 9th century AD.(Please lets not count MSV/IR s Agara Mudhala Ezhuthellam in KB s movies.Thirukkural is from BC!!)

OISG: Haven't you heard 'Maasil veenaiyum' sung by SJ-AS Mahadevan from Paathai Theriyudhu Paar?
Its a stunning composition by MBS. If bb agrees, I'll try to bring it to SOTD some Wednesday down the line :-)

woh! what a classic song. this weekend is certainly different, thanks to bb and venkat. have to call friends to discuss this very very special song. remembering the good old days of Ilangai vaanoli, a great contributor to tfm.
what a beautiful singing by KJ and PS. the chorus part in PS is a great value adder.
wish SC had worked a little more in tfm.

Ramu Kariat commenced work on 'karumpu' soon after his 'nellu' (malayAlam - based on a novel by Vatsala that won the Malayala Manorama award) with a completed script by the veteran Thamizh author Thi.JAnakiraman. It appears Kariat wanted to make it so grand - in cinemascope - celebrating Thamizh culture and who else but thi.jA could have penned the story for him? For some reason or other - I presume these could mostly be financial - the movie was given up after recording the kAnalvari songs.
Venkata Swaminathan, the art - literary critic observes in his foreword to the screeplay of 'agrahAraththil kazhuthai' (with MBS as an MD behind the screen and the protogonist, on it) that even the manuscript of karumpu could not be traced till date.
I remember there is yet another version of kAnalvari sung by Salilda's wife.Like Venkat, I too got addicted to this song, thru SLBC.
Not flying off a tangent - one more musical piece from the great epic (CilappathikAram) - 'Aychiyar kuravai' has been beautifully rendered by M.S.Subbulakshmi (starting with 'vadamalaiyai maththAkki, vAsukiyai nANAkki' and ending soul stirringly with 'nArAyaNa ennA nAvenna nAvE').

Saravanan,
'mAsil vEnaiyum' from 'Pathai theriyuthu pAr' - I still remember the passion in SJ's voice when she sings 'virakil thEyinan, pAlil padu neyyinan' and that in the male voice - I thought it was 'vetRi vadivElanE' Sundaram - raising in a crescendo during the penultimate lines ' maraya ninRuLan mAmaNi sOthiyAn'. What a wonderful song!
When u bring it here, SaravaNan, could u also try for the light humor laced 'rAsa makaL pOl irundhE .. iddaliyE En iLaiththup pOnAi? nE endhap payal mEdhu kAdhal Anai?' by KCS.Arunachalam, also featured in the same movie?
Comrade KCS who passed away a couple of years ago was a great marapu poet, who also penned the evergreen melody 'chinna chinna mookkuththiyAm' for pAdhai theriyuthu pAr. Who says the communists lack humor? Listen to this lilting AL Raghavan number to be proved pleasantly wrong :-)
