Ilaiyaraja and the bass guitar!
Dear All, Im a newbie to this wonderful site. Ive just been going through the old IR threads, especially 'Ilaiyaraja and the guitar' and the like. I was fascniated by the way ppl had discussed these topics (Mux, Kanchana and Kitcha ... hats Off!) I am absolutely bowled out by IRs use of the bass guitar in many many songs, like Ninnukori, POOgatru PudhirAnathu and so on. Im planning to learn the acoustic guitar and I thought Ilaiyaraja's love for the bass guitar shopuld be discussed more in detail. Please post ur comments!

IRs bass guitar work is awesome in so many songs, it's surprising to realize how difficult it is to think of just a few to cite here!
A few which pop up immediately
1) Ninnukkori Varnam
2) Devanin Koil (Aruvadai Naal - Chitra deserves a national award and so does the bass guitarist), 3)Mandram Vandha (Mouna Raagam - if you buy a music system, test the peice with this number), 4) Rosa Poo (Agni Natchatram)
5) Eeramaana Rosave (Mohan sings this song in the rain with his little daughter)
6) Chinna Chinna Vannakkuil (Mouna Raagam - what a song! check out the bass guitar in the pallavi)
and the list goes on

Srivatsan, yeah that "Ennodu Serndhu Aadungal" song (mike Mohan, right?) has some kalakkal bass guitar work...
The best part about IRs music when I hear some of his eighties songs now, I discover something new (which wouldn't have made sense to me at that time). It's like going on a treasure hunt. We do have some good music directors now like ARR and HJ but IR was a pioneer ahead of his time.

Why no one has commented on the title song of "Moodu Pani" ?
Tha Bass guitar had been used to best effect in this song.

Kumar, andha second interludea describe panrathukku varthaiye illa ... the song is a great one, though it features as a 'conversational' song in the film ... and the bass is too good ... my guitar teacher is amazed whenever I tell him about such good guitar pieces ...

You ppl seems to be very knowledgeable, esp Srivatsan, PrabhuDas,it would be great if there was an objective discussion on bass works of other MDs(ARR,YSR etc) too.

Thamizhan,
Pepsi and coke have standard tastes but tender coconuts taste depends on the soil, fertilizers and climate, just like IR's music sometimes good sometimes bad depends on his mood and so many other external factors.
Tender coconut when produced in a streamlined fashion, when the tastes are standardized can also compete with Pepsi and coke.
Similarly IR when gives consistent hits can think about entering the global market!

guyz, am an ARR fan....was listening to 'vaan megham' from punnagai mannan.....MANNN.....THE BASS LINES ARE MIND BOGGLING!!!!
WHOA!!...hats off raja.
but donno y he is not doing well these days. plz listen to 'viru virumandi virumandi'....the 2nd stanza has stereotypical basslines...juz looped kinda stuff..dint expect it from IR....looked like some HJ had composed it:(

"Tender coconut when produced in a streamlined fashion, when the tastes are standardized can also compete "
This reminds me of Eric Schmidt's (CEO of Google) words in an interview today, "inventions cannot be scheduled" ..similarly creativity cannot be guaranteed. You are right IR's output, depends on his 'mood and other external factors'. But the minimum quality is very high. When the rhythm, melody, lyrics, orchestration and singing come together, it becomes a classic.

That coconut example was good guys, and also the 'explanation' from k. Feels really good to see people appreciating IR, especially after listening to his songs!

Prasanna: I don't find that second interlude stereotypical - reason: See the way that bass piece jels in with the prewvious stanza in the song . It is not abrupt, and does not 'shatter' your ears. It goes on in the background, and it does feels great to hear Kamal singing in high pitch along with it.

I was listening to the 'Nilavu Pattu' song from Kannukkul Nialavi by our IR. The prelude to the song is simply fantastic with an amazing electric guitar piece. I get a similar feeling of something that could have been extended into a really rich piece - the same feeling I get when I listen to the TVG's soulful singing+violins in 'Andhi Mazhai pozhigiradhu' and the bass flute intro in 'Aasaya kaathula thhodhu vittu' from Johny. Wish IR would do a instrumental album extending such immortal instrumental pieces.
Digression:
'Oru Naal oru kanavu' from the same film also has a beautiful acoustic guitar track all through it. Nammma IR nejammave Raaja thaan.
End Digression.

gk, thanks for the link. Here is the translation (rough??) of the Italian text about Ilaiyaraaja.
----
Ilaiyaraaja is a central figure of the Indian music, popular in its Country for the innumerable resonant columns film from him composed, collaborating with ensemble and renowned soloists in all the Indian. After about thirty year the Indian composer is shown in Italy, directing an orchestra reunited for the occasion. The concert is a new production than ripete the fortunate collaboration between Town Theater of Modena and Angelic Festival of Bologna, after the success obtained the past year with the presence of Karlheinz Stockhausen.
----
I am not able to interpret (or relate to anything) the even though. Was he in Italy directing an orchestra??
