The opening intro of the song 'malayoram maanguruvi maavilayil paattezhuthi' from the Prashanth starrer Enga Thambi sounds suspiciously similar to the 'Turkish March' piece by Mozart. But IR seems to have Indianised it adequately.
Lemme search for a sound clip of Turkish March and get back....

good one kupps!!
people who posess the intellect and knowledge to understand, good music, can critisize/appreciate rahman/IR music. so north india is instantly disqualified.
In north anu malik is the best becoz he serves what the audience deserve. rahman will not even be understood to the point of being debated.
have a few tabalas going behind and any mix of words containing "mohabbat" and "pyaar" will sell.
why waste sophistacated sound engineering on an album which will first be killed cruelly by the director in picturization and then the audience later... and so call critics will chip in with "expert comments" too.
south rules! kollywood rocks!!
another southie northie... trash talk blah blah !!!!

BTW, Hindi songs always had good sound engineering, with all those Pune Film Institute sound engineers working in Bombay. I felt really odd that ARR would be considered as a 'sound engineering' pioneer there too. Many films of IR had good recording (recently, thaLapathi) but people responded to ARR better mainly because the sounds were 'different' probably coming mostly from synths, which sounds 'softer'/'sweeter' than the real instruments.

doubter/bharath...the list of words any hindi song would contain is bit more longer i guess..dil,deewana, mastana, sanam , kasam, mohabbat, pyaar, zindagi ..what say..:)

well! in my opinion , if I have to be terribly frank is ...
with regards to anything behind the scenes( editing, narration, cinematograpghy, graphics) tamil movies are much superior and have an innovative way of conceptualizing vidoes for songs(especially for that of good ARR songs)
our stories do not rely heavily of familiar triangular love stories and atleast 5 movies a year are really cool(out of the 90 odd movies that get released)
hindi movies rely heavily on love stories and music rarely deviates from the "tabla" style almost all attempted innovations are blatant copies. there is recognition only for on-screen stars and except a few pretenders there is no technical-behind-the-scenes person who can be considered trend setter.(comparable to the p.c srirams, rahmans, suresh urs, manirathnams balachanders etc)
probably 1 or 2 movies out of 220 per year really becomes a hit and out of those 2 per year maybe 1 movie every two years (like sarfrosh) can really appeal.
the only thing hindi movies have that tamil movie do not allegedly have is good looking faces to fill the screen.
our heroines are just too fat( kushboo, ramba suganya et all ) and both heroes and heroines arent as good looking as the northies( notable exceptions kamal, madhavan , ajith)
our heroes are very old averaging 35-40 and look like mama and chittapa and periappas. they r fat also.
(NOTE: beauty is strictly defined by individual perception and so the above opinion is my OWN )
but now we have borrowed hindi slick fit gals into the tamil scenes and so the only defect that remains r the heroes... I personally dont have a problem with heroes but i also sincerely feel they have to work-out and stop appearing unshave and unkempt.
south indian gals and guys need to be educated to cultivate the art of keeping fit. shedding away traditional inhibitions and other social obstacles, they should consider physical shape and fitnesss, important and work on it from an early age. we have sadly been lacking in this aspect.
unfortunately patriotism prevents northies to see thro this.. if only they cud understand tamil...

okay after that jingoistic kollywood praise back to "inspired" songs
I was surprised to see ARR's "kuluvalila" from muthu being listed as an inspiration from some arbitrary song.
"kulavalila" beats rhythm and the entirre back ground sound was heavily inspred my Michael jackson's ever so famous "billy jean" .
The start of "kuluvalile" is exactly the replica of jacksons magnum opus.
I am surprised that inspite of having so much similarity with probably pops biggest selling single of all time the connection was not made.
maybe rehman had this song in the bak of his mind...
hey! ARR composed a song for Michael jacksons latest album..
news abt this song and about jacksons new album seem to be in cold storage.

Did ARR get a chance to work with MJ because of this song ? :)

When I listened to the Hindi PUKAR song, 'SuntA hai mera khuda', it reminded me of an old Shivaji song... and I sang the lines again & again and realizd that it was definitely based on the old number. The song is:
'KallellAm mANikka kal Aguma kalay(kadhai?) ellAm kaNgaL sollum Kalai Aguma'.
People may argue that both are based on 'MAyA mALava GowLa raga'. However the structure of the melody in both the songs is VERY identical and can not be brushed off as a mere 'coincidence'.
Even the alaap kind of humming in the old song (Susheela or LRE?) finds its place in a new avataar in the Hindi song (humming by Swarnalatha).
What say?

Yes Peter Pan, there is a lot of similarity, in fact some guest had mentioned this in Nayyandi Darbar too, he aslo added that mayamalava gowlai is a very oft used raagam in middle eastern music. Ok I'm digressing, back to the point.
ARR saying that he doesnt listen to older songs is BS. Every present day composer will definitely have traces of older gems (particularly the ones he had listened in the background as a youngster). Its not that they play the older song, think of a newer, updated version and compose it. Its always been lingering in their minds and it comes out in their creativity as part of their package.
ARR has loads of such examples. Deva...hmmm lemme see...may be this...when i hear oru ponnu onnu from Kushi, I'm reminded of a few old songs including 'oridam thanile, nilayilla ulaginile', particularly the part 'urundodidum panam kaasugal' part.
It does not mean the composer is a copycat. It simply means the composer isnt creative enough to mask his tune without reminding anyone of the older one. Sometimes the masking part is done with excellent orchestration as in ARR's case.
IR has quite a few instances on this too...the famous SPB quoted inji iduppazhaga instance for example.

There was a post in some thread (bashing Deva) that he had copied Ofra Haza in Aasai. Its also now available in the copied songs list (the aasai song 'thilothamma' inspired from Ofra Haza's 'Galbi').
But either Deva or Vasanth seems to be a big fan of Ofra. 'cos another Ofra Haza song 'Im nin alu' has formed the inspiration for the Nerukku ner number 'thudinkindra kadhal (thummalai ponradhu, eppavaum varalaam evar kandaar)'.
Listen to the original, particularly from 1:01 onwards...

kiru,
yes ARR and MJ did work together in LA abt a year and half b4 in preparation for MJ's song in his forthcoming album. they also performed together in a berlin(or was it munich) concert with prabhu deva also dancing with MJ in that concert with Rahman doing the music.. it was just a small bit though for some charity stuff.
I am not sure if ARR's song will appear in MJ's next album. normally MJ does 25-28 songs for an album and selects close to 14 for final release, no one knows if ARR's song will make the final cut. since anything regarding MJ's new album is always kept a secret until his first advertisment on TV no one knows wats happeneing. I am sure not even ARR wud know by now.
bye
