i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.

Rahman's new score in Lagaan,"Once Upon a Time in India" is strongly influenced by the famous and most vibrant classical ever..."O fortuna"...also used in Braveheart and Old-Spice commercial

Also, 'Minnale's' Vaseegara seems a lot like Sting-Cheb Mami's new hit 'desert rose'....at least the part where Sting starts singing.
Bharath:
Could you post the names of the originals of Pennalla pennalla (bach?) and the arabic song which has 'vennalavin' interludes?

Should MDs be more open and include the name of the songs they were inspired with on their album covers and credit titles in films ?
I am also into composing and I wouldn't mind openly admitting my sources of inspiration. This would actually give me a better chance to prove my individuality.
Actually IR and ARR have done a good job of their "copying" if you may call it.

Rebecca Oommen!!
WHAT A COINCIDENCE! do u know I was watching some TV serial in Nick@Night channel and in the middle of that serial, there was an advt for a CD collection of an old group called Kingstons( I think i got the name correct) and in that Advt. they played a song sung by them (presumably their biggest hit) and I thought I'd heard it someehere b4, after couple of hours of scratching my head and re-repeating the tune , i got it as
"Jab koi baat bigad jaye jab koi mushkil pad jaye.....".
I thought this hindi song was from the movie "daddy" *ing anupam kher and pooja bhatt .
mebbe i am wrong.
b.t.w kingstons are like a 1940 music group. and i dunno the name of the english song, when i see the advt again i will note and post it.
the hindi song is an exact replica of the english version, i actually liked this hindi song and was surprised to find it similar to the english song.
But wat a coincidence!!!!
bye

Jab koi baat is of course from Jurm. I thought it was copied from the Flatt and Scruggs number 'Her the whistle blow (a hundred miles)!
Another copied song in Jurm was 'marne ke darr se', which was inspired by Madonna's La isla bonita.

Deva'vai ennavendru solla?
He scored a really good song for Nerukku Ner 'engenge engenge' and he reuses it with very little difference in Ninaikatha Naalillai (*ing Parthiban, Devyani) as 'bramha bramha'!
Any idea where I can listen to the songs of citizen, online?

Hello,
Yesterday (Apr.9th), in the Hari-Giri Assembly, Pravin Mani was the guest. Yugi Sethu was mentioning about Thaniyae ThannanThaniyae" of Alai Payuthae as a lift and sung the original. Anyone know about this?

Sorry for this malayalam related posting - thedi thedi aluthu poitten athunala thaan!
I saw a Malayalam song recently in DD4. Starred Jayaram and a few others I couldnt identify. The song started with a very catchy western kind of rythm and tune (shot in a western cowboy bar kind of setting).
The second and 3rd para were totally different from the opening. The tune of these were copied from an old ghazal by Hariharan ('jab se woh mahpara gaya', from his album Sukoon, composed by Hariharan himself!). Surprisingly it was none other than Hariharan himself, who sang these ghazal'ish pieces. This sequence was shot in more serene settings.
The catchy opening was not sung by Hariharan, somebody else!
Can somebody help me out with the movie/ composer?

I saw that Nayyandi Darbar episode too. Praveen was talking about one of his songs which became a big hit in Australia (where he was based prior to Canada). Abd generally talked about his contribution to some Rahman songs. Was there any mention of any copying? Did I miss something?

I heard the song 'Thaniye' was composed/programmed by Pravin. Generally he was talking about the CAP (Cut & Paste) technology in TFM.

Hi all,
i'm a regular visitor to TFM
I just wanted to post this for quite a long time
Sing the Rangeela song tanha tanha ......normally
Now sing it at slow pace.....!!
Get something..... IR 's "Masi masam alana ponnu " from some rajini film ....
The songs follow the same pattern till the end
Now thats called inspiration or copying ???

man!,
the sandam seems to be close, Like you can sing both the songs in these tunes..Since most of the film songs follow the same time pattern this occurs at times. I would called it a coincidence. "Ulagam endrum ore mozi" an old mgr number sounds like boneym "by the rivers of babylon"...

Man!
brilliant catch. Although I wudnt venture into discussing if one was the copy of the other etc... but nice observation. YOu have on listening to "tanha.. tanha" varied the speed of the song and queried your memory to pick out a similar song from the past. maybe easy to spot similar songs based on raagas and other technical fundas but not easy on mere observation and projection of imagined versions of observations
good work!

Bharath,
even i do not say it is an copy....but the way both resemble althrough the song...Particualrly
in the second stanza ...(i do not know the tech word for this) ...makes me feel ARR could have been inspired by this song....
Both the songs are in somewhat like situations...
Many wouldn't agree but atleast i found somebody ....
