Hi all:
Many times we miss to notice certain songs which are too good, just because either the film goes for a flop or some other popular song in the film overshadows this one. Hearing such a song carefully will tell how superbly it is crafted. I will start with a couple of such songs :
1) Kanna Varuvaya (Manadhil Urudhi Vendum). The beginning humming itself is mesmerising. And the interludes are simply superb.
2) Chinna thayaval thandha rasave (Dhalapathi). Soga Rasam pizhiyum paadal. The tune of this song comes often in the BGM. The beginning, the interludes are too great! Its been a very long time I heard this song.
3) Keeravani Iravile Kanavile Paada Vaa Nee (Paadum Paravaigal). A beautiful one by SPB.

song 8 in my list indeed is from thudikkum karangal, the MD I am sure is SPB (his debut as MD?)
I guess the uzhavan song meant here is (pennalla pennal rojappu...) music by ARR. It is a straight lift from Pesum mani muthu rojakkal (IrumalarkaL, Kamal, Sridevi, SPB music by msv). Or as ARR fans would shamelessly call 'inspired by'. I guess if you take on an average 5 month to score music, you can only score on 'inspirations' not by intuition or imagination (which ARR lacks utterly). Have a close look at any the songs various people have mentioned here (incl. my list). They failed to catch the attention because of lack of publicity, with the kinda publicity everyone gets these days (esp. ARR) these would have be etched, engraved or petrified in the history
(I guess this bit of ARR baiting is in place here)

Vimal, it was by SPB. The movie name is 'Saami Pota Mudichu'. But I would say that best song from that movie are:
1. Pon eduthu vaaren vaaren Un....(Mano,Chitra)
2. Mangalathu kunkumapottu vandhathey...(Chitra)

There is one just average song.
Raasaa veetu rosaa onnu....(SPB, Chitra).
Typical IR song.
There is another SAR style song in it. Harey Raamaa Harey Kirishna.....

Mano, I dont remember that song. I will check it out.
"mannavanE manavanE" [SPB/SJ] from thandhu vittEn ennai. also
"muththamma muththu muththu muththaalamma" [AM/SJ] from the same movie are neat.
How about songs from V.Shekar's "paarvathi ennai paaradi"? I dont think this movie ever made it to the theatres.

Yes Gokul, PEP made it to the theatres. Only the title song was the best in the movie, rest of them...... Thanthu Vitten Ennai is by Sridhar. It had great songs, but it didn't do well in the box office.

Vaanam niram maaRum from DhaavaNi KanavugaL is a damn good number that was completely overshadowed by Sengamalam sirikkudhu.
The only good song that Chandrabose ever score also lies forgotten. "Maan poove siRu mainaave" by KJY. cool no.
The last IR-VM release, Paalaivanap ParavaigaL, had some outstanding songs. am able to recollect only "Karai mElE alai pOle viLaiyaadu maanE".

Friends, have any of your ever listened to the following song MDed by IR ? it came in the late 80s,in a I.V Sasi directed movie featuring Amala and Sivakumar - "NANDHA VANAM POOTHHIRUKKUDHU ADI AMMAADI, VANDU VANDHU AADIPAADATHHAAN"
sung by SPB - I rate this as one of the most imaginatively composed number of IR with terrific interludes - in terms of mood invoking ability, this song is on par with songs like "Sangeetha megam" - Udhaya Geedham, "Poomaala ponnukkoru" - Manam virumbudhey unnai .
Even the lyrics were good, I don't remember the lyricist- there are lines like
"Poovodu poongaatru bhoopalam paadaadho adhu yenammaa ;
puriyaadho yen kelvi, badhil sollakkoodaadho adhu yenammaa;
pacchai pasum pulveli, muthhu mani neer thuli;
ondrai ondru soodikkondaadum, adhu anbukku velichham, ottikkondu naalum panpaadum;
thirappu vizhaa nadandhu vittaal manamo dhinam vaanathhil parandhirukkum"
But,like many IR songs, even this gem went into oblivion - this song had a typical IR bass base and heavy orchestration and was different from the other songs of IR that came out at that time.
PS:Mr.YVS Mani , I have my doubts about the song from Thiruppumunai, which you have mentioned - it was sung by Mano, if I was not mistaken - it was during that time,MSV was rumored to have done some music for IR's movies, at least the BGM part -since IR was extremely busy those days - this movie THIRUPPUMUNAI was also rumored to have BGMed by MSV - if anyone watches the movie, one can very easily say that BGM is not IR - anyway, the songs from this movie were hardly passable and deserved their natural death - the movie itself was a big "Thiruppumunai" for me in my life in that I never again made the mistake of going to a movie without asking anybody.

I had the `soththakkadalayai menra' experience with the Tiruppumunai cassette those days (1990?). Among the flurry of great albums from IR, such ones came too. (Funny, the cassette even had some forgettable instrumental piece featured as `IR's music'...)

Thanks a lot for remembering me about Illam song. (Superb song)

I don't know if this was already discussed. I saw the film "Sundara Kandam" recently. One song was very good in that (others were crap).
Poonguruvi paadadi suga raagam thedi thaan
Both the lyrics and the tune were very good.

It usually happens that although some songs are not so popular outside, they are hits in the DF. The biggest example is Guru.
However, there were a couple of songs that I felt were not appreciated enough in the DF itself. They are:
1. Vandaal vandaal rajakumari - Oru oorile oru raajakumari (* Bhagyaraj, Meena; MD: IR). It had one of the best ever humming pieces.
2. Sriramaney unnai radhai thedinaal (movie??; *:??; MD: IR) this movie was a remake of Nammoora Mandaara Hoove (Kannada). WHile the movie and songs were a big hit in Kannada, they were flops in Tamizh. This song is easily one of IR's best in the 90s. Amazing WC interlude and great tune.
