Robbie,
LE means light edition, it can do only 32 tracks. cannot do a dolby 5.1 encoding, LE works with Digi001 and 002 interface. (think this interface as an external sound card that is connected to the computer via fireware or USB cable)
HD hardware uses protool TDM version, where you can record upto 64tracks of audio , it has more function like beat master, etc. You can also mix for Dolby 5.1.
Digi 001 and 002 now supports cakewalk sonar now, but does not work with most other software.
Nuendo is quite similar to TDM version of protools. It does offer features like TDM. Pretty cool software but costly too for small timers. When considered with protools TDM this is quite cheap. Nuendo if i rememnber offers unlimted tracks.
But stability wise like most, I prefer protools because simply it is time tested. Does not crash on me during some serious work.
Remember Both the software needs proprietary hardware. sold along as bundle.
Let me tell you these are real pro stuff, has a learning curve.
I used Nuendo to record one song in my album Mahaakavi, the final mix of entire album was also done on Neundo and Mastering was done using WaveLab.
In chennai I found there are plenty of Bootleg copies of Nuendo or other stenburg products going around, but protools is hard to distribute in illegal way.

Yes that's right Robbie...I use Protools MBOX...
Digi001 and Digi002 are for Pros:-))

Srik,
One more question:
If Nuendo also needs "proprietary hardware" to work with, how was it possible to distribute illegal copies of the software? Just like Pro Tools, it wouldn't run without the bundled hardware, isn't it?

MBOX is a midlevel product, is a sound card higer to Soundblaster Live. It does offer some truncated features of Digi001.
But the lastest protools 6.1 for Xp does nto work quite well with MBOX,
aditya: if you are considering to upgrade to 6.1 ($90) from 5.3 do not upgrade, there is are some serious data flow flaws in MBOX which Digidesign is working on, 6.1 also has flaws in bouncing
data. Digi is working on it.
I seriously dont recommend buying mbox as they are bundled with 6.1 now. Adiyta change to Digi 001 you can get it for $800
Robbie,
Athan i dont know, it seems you can get the hardware alone in India, how ? i have no clue. A sales man offered my NUendo for Rs 12000 or something.

i got this in the web..
Do I need to buy the Nuendo hardware to effectively use Nuendo?
No, Nuendo supports any ASIO or ASIO 2.0 supported sound cards. There are over 200 supported PCI sound cards that work very well with Nuendo. Steinberg has provided yet another option with the Nuendo hardware. Our developers have done the research for you and have come up with a combination of hardware and software that work flawlessly together. For more information check out the Hardware section on our product pages.
--- so now we know why, for somereason i was under the assumption that it works only with its hardware.

Srik,
For Rs.12,000 ???? Do you have the contact number of the salesman, I would immediately buy a piece from him :)

yes I think only ProTools(Digidesign) needs proprietary hardware. They also
have certain restriction about the hardware(motherboard, chipsets etc) of the PC also.
Nuendo/Cubase(Steinberg) work with all hardware.
If you are planning to use one software for all purpose, I recommend Cubase since
Nuendo is more for mixing/post production work and not for
actual sequencing.

Well, Srik, I was just joking :)
What use would the hardware be without its operating software? LOL

Well, Srik, I was just joking :)

Further, as I had stated earlier, I would never buy hardwares for my little home studio. I just don't wanna mess around with those things. That was why I was insisting on to buy softwares that can run as stand-alone and not with ANY hardwares (addnl.)
So, are you sure that both Pro Tools and Nuendo could not be bought alone without those hardwares? :)

Pro Tools does nto work well with others, you should go to them for hardware. so you can be trapped , since i am here in US i have good acces to their support. i have no issues as such.
So best bet in India woul dbe as Jay suggests go after Steinburg software, they are quite easy and smooth. Stability also depends on your pc power, get a good pc 2ghz with 1gig ram and 80gig will take care of this.
Dont install anything else on the pc, like windows messenger, virus scanner, turn off network/modem on this. keep it clean from other things. just the OS and this software, ofcourse cd buring software can be installed.
All the best let us know your progress..:)

And, thanks JAY and SRIK.
I will choose from Cubase or Nuendo. Also, my friend recommended Logic also. Well, I would appreciate your comments as to which one is the best :)
I would also begin finding "user" reviews on the net on these softwares now, before actually investing.
Thanks a lot :)

And one thing i found in Nuendo, better have 2 video monitors hooked up for clarity sake,
else i am sure screen will be cluttered to the core. Too many windows open and close...
while protools has only 3 major screens to deal with.

Robbie,
Logic is great too. But the company which makes it - Emagic was bought by Apple a few months ago. So they stopped development for PC!! Lot of PC people switched from Logic to Cubase SX then. The first thing you need to get once you have a good PC is to get a good sound card. So yes..you do have to invest in hardware.

Dear Jay,
So Logic comes only for Mac? Well, then. So I go for Cubase SX, Nuendo, and Reason. :) well, I seem to have decided now :)
And, for the sound card, I think I have a good one for these softwares. Mine is an in-built 5.1 capable sound card that comes on board A7N266-VM. I think that would work fine :)
Thanks again...

Robbie,
You might have to think twice about the sound card. Professional sound cards are in a different league altogether. Theres something called ASIO which is a driver technology by steinberg but supported by most pro cards. Your sound card should support it otherwise you'll run into latency problems.

Srik,
I had been following many threads in newtfmpage.com for a long time, and I remember that once here you had told that you were the one who did "Mahakavi" album. And, in your interview to Dhivanii.com, you had told that you had achieved grades from Musee Musicals, Chennai. Since I am also in Chennai, I would like to learn music. So, can you please give me more info as to what sort of grades you had pursued? Was that in Theory or Keyboarding or Piano? Which music college's affliation? How long will the course take? Kindly fill me in.

I have another question to all:
How many tamil Music Directors are trained in Western Music? And, does anybody have the idea as to the level of their qualifications?
And, this brings me to another question:
As we have in carnatic music specific ragas for specific emotions, are there also any in western music? Like, say, "Neelaambari" is for composing "lullabies". Is there anything like that in Western music? Like specific scales or modes for specific moods/emotions?
